Giddy up for a CRUSH family weekend at Tomich Wines

‘PONY IN THE VINES’ Featuring Gathered (market) For the family friendly Crush alternative head to Tomich Winery’s Pony in the Vines. The young at heart will delight with; pony rides, face painting and even tractor hay rides through the vineyard. A visual spectacular will also be on offer with the Equestrian SA High Point Show on Saturday and the wonderful Gathered market on Saturday and Sunday! For the second time, a vineyard horse show will feature as part of the Crush festival, allowing families a taste of country living with style. Hosted by Tomich Wines, the ‘Pony in the Vines’ Equestrian SA High Point Show is part of a weekend long program and is the family pick of the Crush festival, held Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th January. Tomich Wines Managing Director, Randal Tomich says families will enjoy this rare opportunity to be a front row spectator at a dressage and horse show, as well as participate in fun activities like pony and hay bales rides through the vineyard. “It’s a pleasure for us to invite families to meet some of our state’s best horses and their riders. My brother and I were lucky enough to grow up on the farm with horses, which have also played a huge part of our own children’s upbringing. We’re really excited that we can make this experience more accessible to the public and help create memories for other families too,” he says. The winery has also partnered with one of Adelaide’s most popular markets ‘Gathered’. This year, bringing SA owned arts + crafts.   From ‘Gathered’ owner Jenna O’Dell: ‘Gathered started after visiting other markets and events in Adelaide and felt that they were really lacking in atmosphere and experience. I was able to start to see the great talent that we have right here in our doorstep and wanted to make a focus of these great SA makers + creators, rather than bringing anyone from interstate. I have a background in events and was excited to create something new and from scratch and have enjoyed every minute of it.” The aim of the Pop-Up market is to bring a piece of Gathered to the Adelaide Hills at such a great time of year. A lot of people still think that the Hills is so far away…when it isn’t at all. So what a great way to introduce more SA creatives to the local ‘scene’ by tempting them with wine and adding another experience to the great event that Tomich puts on as part of Crush! About: The Equestrian SA High Point Show The Pony in the Vines Equestrian SA High Point Show will showcase South Australia’s finest horses and national equestrian riders, set in the Tomich family’s private vineyard in Woodside. A day of equestrian elegance, this is perfect for horse lovers and families who’ve always wanted to learn more about these magnificent animals. Over 60 horses will be participating in this qualifying event, which assesses them on being beautifully conformed, of high quality, movement and lovely manners. The show includes a fancy dress and a novelty component for the horses – think plaited and coloured horse tails, crazy costumes, top hats and ribbons. Riders (aged from five years – senior) will also be dressed up in their official horse showing finery – including hacking jackets, fancy dress and cravats. About: Pony in the Vines This Crush Festival, Tomich Wines opens their family’s private 320-acre vineyard to the public for a family themed weekend, with a program created for adults, children, food and wine lovers alike. Parents can sip Tomich’s new season release of trophy winning wines under the shade of tents and umbrellas while children can play on the picturesque vineyard lawns. A family friendly menu from local food trucks will delight, with frozen sweet treats Loca Pops. Dannii O’Donnell: My Social Media Sabbatical

Meet Dannii O’Donnell, Mum to Edie, two years and Raffy, 13 weeks. When the kids are fast asleep Dannii she uses writing as her creative outlet. My Social Media Sabbatical – By Dannii O’Donnell I was deep in a newborn-induced social media abyss. I’m talking hours stuck on the couch underneath an insatiable, cluster-feeding baby. Nights up breastfeeding in bed, scrolling Instagram in a desperate attempt to keep my eyes open (and often failing, I might add, jolting awake with phone still in hand, thumb in scrolling position, bub still on boob). I would pat his milk-filled belly with one hand and update Facebook with the other. Just what exactly did the breastfeeding, sleep-deprived mother do before social media? I remember musing to myself. God forbid I get stuck beneath a sleeping baby, my phone out of reach. Oh the misery! And sure, it was a great way to kill the time and, yes, it (sometimes) helped me stay awake. But you know what? It was making me feel like shit. I came to this conclusion after a rather difficult day. Okay, a disastrous day. Two kids under two is enough to drive any Mum mad, and on this particular day I was exhausted, hormonal and a mess (not even a hot one). My little darlings had gotten the better of me and as I sat on my bed, breastfeeding the newest member of our tribe while scrolling Instagram, tears began to roll down my cheeks. I was only feeling worse and worse: The Fit Mums with the toned, tanned rigs and immaculate diets. The Fashionable Mums with wardrobes that mixed vintage and new oh-so effortlessly. The Creative Mums with the picture-perfect Instagram squares, consistent in colour palette and theme. Don’t even get me started on the DIY Mums, kids’ rooms styled as though they’d been lifted directly from a Pinterest board. They say ‘Comparison is the thief of joy.’ Well, I was making a lot of comparisons. Why don’t I look like that after having my babies? Why doesn’t my Instagram feed look like that? Why don’t I live in Byron Bay in a pristine beach house, dressed in kick-ass boho get-up? Yeah, zero joy. And in that moment, as I mentally tore shreds off myself, I decided enough was enough. No more Facebook, no more Instagram. I was going on a Social Media Sabbatical. I swiftly deleted the apps and felt an instant sense of relief. One month, I thought to myself. I will go one month without it and see how I feel. I instantly started to wonder what I would do with all my new spare time. My first thought? Read. I would read. And in a matter of minutes I had placed half a dozen books on hold at my local library. And do you know how many of those books I finished? Not one. Clearly I got a bit excited; I have a toddler and a new born for goodness sake! Nevertheless, the intention was there and I do intend to read those books when time permits. So I may not have read any books, but as the month passed by I noticed a few things: I was more present in conversations with my loved ones. I played with my kids more. I still took photos (with an actual camera) but without the pressure of finding the perfect filter or writing a witty caption. I shopped online less. I was there to enjoy life’s precious little moments, without the distraction of my phone. And biggest of all, I felt a hell of a lot better about myself. Now I’m not going to get up on my high horse and say that this Social Media Sabbatical has changed my life and that I’m quitting indefinitely. But I will say this: I am certainly more aware of the impact that social media platforms have on my own self-esteem and on my relationships, and I do intend to switch off every now and then to reset. So, if you’ve found yourself in a similar position to me and are considering a digital detox, give it a try. At worst, I can guarantee you’ll save some money. And at best, you might just discover the important things in life. @danii.odonnell

Brand Profile: RaspberryPlum

A fresh, original kid’s wear brand, for children who are fashion conscious, stylish but still love to be carefree. ”It’s not obvious childrenswear. It’s cool, cleverly designed and perfect for any little girl. Feminine without being overly girlie. Contemporary without being a slave to trend. There is a definite nod to vintage, but overall the range is fun and more importantly wearable.”- Dilly Foxtrot. The luxury children’s fashion brand is based in London and the entire collection is sourced and manufactured in Europe. Its founder Aleksandra Matthews is a graduate from London’s prestigious Royal College of Art. Originally from Belgrade, she moved to England as a child, her mixed identity is an important influence on her work and the provenance of the product. As well as a pledge to create unique, creative garments to inspire love of colour and artistic imagination within children RaspberryPlum is also a huge advocate for ecological and environmental issues. Some of its collection is manufactured in Serbia as it their aim to help re-establish and promote a once thriving apparel industry, which has suffered greatly as a result of political turmoil in the region over the past 20 years. Manufacturing solely in Europe helps to maintain a lower carbon footprint. All of their packaging is also made from recycled materials. Every collection has a story and takes inspiration from European artists, theatricals and creatives. Read below for the brands own beautiful description of their current collections influences: RaspberryPlum SS17 Collection ‘Abstract Theatre’ ‘This season RaspberryPlum collection took its inspiration from a few different sources, which are closely connected. The stock character Pierrot, and his large frill collars, oversized buttons, frills and wide culottes have inspired the shapes of the ss17 range. The collection features strong graphic images which have been influenced by the outlandish costumes of theatre of Bauhaus and the Modern and Postmodern stage of Oskar Schlemmer. We also looked the work of one of the leading album and book cover designers of the 20th century Neil Fujita. As with previous seasons we kept the colours soft and summery; lilac, nude, soft orange, citrus yellow, pastel green and denim blue. Some of the colours intentionally looking almost sun bleached. The colours were influenced by the pallet of the sketched for the costumes of Triadic Ballet by Oskar Schlemmer.’ blog.raspberryplum.com raspberryplum.com @raspberryplum

In the Driver’s Seat

The iPad AKA the ultimate child silencer is every parents guilty pleasure. With this new square screen generation, modern kids seem to have lost the ability to produce convincing revving-engine noises with their mouths. Instead of car chase reenactments with ‘BROOM BROOM’ and ‘BEEP BEEP’ sound effects we hear nothing but silence when we place an iPhone or iPad in front of them. Have we have squashed child imagination? New York-based Candylab Toys is changing that and giving children a chance to get back in the driver’s seat, literally. It knows nostalgia sells and is capitalising on the desire for simpler things and “old” products where people just want something that is straightforward, basic, and tangible in a way that modern technology just can’t offer. We are currently seeing the resurgence of many retro products like turntables, record players, and vinyls. Desire for this kind of product was clearly present, as Candylab all started with a Kickstart campaign raising over $100K. The 1960s American road-trip culture vibe of Candylab’s pieces make for visually pleasing objects that are both ornamental and playful for children. It’s easy to get eyeballs deep in a sea of meaningless plastic toys with very short shelf life, but these wooden toys will stand the test of time. ‘We’re slowly drowning in forgettable toys that break and disassemble — ending in piles of plastic bits — this determined us to create a line of heirloom wood toys that are elegant, durable, and simple, giving children a chance to create their own stories around the objects they play with.’ Candylab. Let’s face it these millennial toy cars were designed for parents who are perhaps even more excited about the products design appeal than their kids. Already in love? Take a front row seat and watch some of their Candylab films… @candylabtoys www.candylabtoys.com

The 30 metre, near vertical climb makes it the tallest adventure activity in Australia and perfect for families looking for a fun and interactive activity to tackle over the holiday period. The Crows Nest is the perfect challenge for anyone who has conquered the current Mega Adventure structure, SkyChallenge, or for someone looking to test their courage and resolve. Alex Blyth, CEO of the MegaAdventure Group said he was delighted to be releasing this new Mega challenge in time for the New Year. “This is the ultimate New Year’s Resolution. I think challenging yourself and overcoming your fears at the start of 2018 is the perfect way to set the tone on a fabulous year ahead,’ he said. Drawing inspiration from Adelaide’s rich shipping history, Mr Blyth went on to say that the attraction was named after the Crows Nest on the Clipper, the ship which transported 889 immigrants to Port Adelaide between 1864 and 1887. “The Clipper made 23 return voyages between London and Adelaide and was one of the fastest ships at the time. Our Crows Nest attraction is exactly the same height as the one on the ship. From our structure, you will be able to see the Adelaide Hills, the CBD, Glenelg and the West Beach shoreline and even as far as Kangaroo Island, on a clear day,” he said. All ages are welcome on the MegaAdventure structure which boasts more than 80 crossings, a free fall jump and now the Crows Nest climb. Recently celebrating its second year anniversary, the adventure park will open up an additional 8 crossings on level 4 as part of the Crows Nest Activity. Since launch thousands of locals and tourists alike have challenged themselves on the structure which calls Adelaide home. The MegaAdventure team will be on the ground and in the air to help kiddos and families alike experience the ultimate adventure this summer in a safe, but challenging environment. The park is open every day over summer between 11am-6pm and is located within Adelaide Shores on the corner of Military Road and Hamra Avenue in West Beach. Super Cool Popsicles with Jessie Spiby

It has been a busy ride for Jessie Spiby since appearing on MasterChef Australia in 2015. These days you will find her at Plant 4 in Bowden where she is a resident event caterer, penning articles and recipes as well as curating her pop-up event Food, Booze + Dancing Shoes. JESSIE’S SUPER COOL POPSICLES My childhood summer memories are of beach trips, boogie boards, being lathered head to toe in sunscreen by my mother and cooling off after school in my grandmother’s swimming pool, happily slurping on her home-made lemon cordial popsicles. Summer is here along with a bounty of yummy seasonal fruits that are just begging to be turned into scrumptious frozen treats. These popsicles are a step up from grandma’s and are ridiculously easy and totally customisable, but the best bit, dare I say it, is that they are pretty damn healthy too! Go nuts and create your own flavour combinations. Blend any fruit you like, add extra yoghurt or indeed have none. Try adding a bit of mint, pieces of fruit, fruit purees or freshly juiced fruit. Try iced tea, herb infusions or fruit teas for an icy sophisticated take on the humble ice block. MAD MANGO + BANANA POPSICLEMAKES AROUND 6 ICE BLOCKS 1 banana1 mangoHoney to taste (this is optional, ripe mangos usually don’t need sweetening)200mls coconut milk or yoghurt METHOD In a blender blitz all the ingredients together. Pour the mixture into the moulds, and freeze for about 3-4 hours. If you are using pop sticks place them into the iceblocks about half an hour after placing in the freezer. This will stop the sticks sinking down too far. BREKKIE ON THE RUN: GRANOLA YOGHURT ICE BLOCKSMAKES AROUND 6 ICE BLOCKS 1 cup of seasonal fruit – berries, grapes, kiwi, peachesHoney to taste200mls natural yoghurt, coconut yoghurt for dairy free1/2 cup granola – homemade or low sugar store bought METHOD Mix your desired amount of honey into the yoghurt.Fill your mould about 1/4 full of fruit. Pour the yoghurt in to moulds making sure there aren’t any air bubbles. A good tap on the bench will get them out or you can stick a chopstick in to release the bubbles.Mix a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt into the granola to moisten the mixture. This will help it stick and freeze in the mould. Top the yoghurt with spoonful of granola mixture.Freeze for about 3-4 hours. If you are using pop sticks place them into the iceblocks about half an hour after placing in the freezer. This will stop the sticks sinking down too far.Enjoy! For a naughty addition try making your own hard setting chocolate sauce by melting together 180g of dark or milk chocolate with 100ml of coconut oil in the microwave. Stir every 20 seconds to prevent burning in spots, or melt in a heat proof bowl over a simmering saucepan. Let it get to room temperature before dipping your iceblock. Save the left sauce and melt together once again next time you want to use it. jessiespiby.com Facebook  JessieSpibyCooksInstagram @jessie_spibyTwitter  jessie_spiby All images by Meaghan Coles Now and Then Photography

How Much Wood Could a Woodchuck?

How much wood could a woodchuck could chuck wood? Well this particular Woodchuck has been hard at work chucking a very visually exquisite array of  custom made wood furniture. Scrolling through Woodchuck’s Instagram is a rather therapeutic experience. Next time the kids are screaming just flick to this uber visually satisfying account… Now that’s cheaper than therapy! The shades and angles in the images are soothing in a kind of way reminiscent of opening a new book for the first time. The pine looks so fresh you can almost smell it through your phone. Woodchuck is a Dutch wood-loving company specialising in interiors, custom-made furniture, concepts and photo styling. ‘We like simplicity and functionality, but our work always radiates warmth. Woodchuck shows that minimalism can also be atmospheric.’ There is something so beautifully simplistic about the pale timber pieces. Somehow the straight angles are still friendly and inviting and this is makes them so very adaptable. At one moment the ‘Haru Large’ is a child’s stool, then a side table and suddenly a breakfast tray. Woodchuck makes everything tailor-made. Exactly as you want. From tables to cupboards and kitchens. On the basis of your wishes, they invent the product that suits you. Not only this but as visual stylists they work to shape an interior. It is not only about the piece of furniture itself, more so, fitting in with the elements of its surrounds and a particular emphasis on light. @woodchuck.nl www.woodchuck.nl/ Facebook @woodchuck.nl
