DIY: Modern Festive Ornaments

You will need: • Balls of yarn • Fork • Scissors • Craft glue • Cardboard • Acrylic paint • Paint brush • Clear baubles (You should be able to nd these at a craft shop or variety store!) • Paint pens • Styrofoam ball • Matches or toothpicks • Sequins • Pins (Make sure you get some with big enough heads so they don’t fall through the sequins!) Pom Pom Garland: 1. Wrap the wool around your fork, keeping it as tight as possible and tie a knot in the middle. 2. Cut each side down the middle and you have a pom pom! You will need to give them a little haircut to even out the sides 3. Repeat steps 1-3 until you have enough pom poms to fill your garland! Glue them all to a long piece of yarn. Cardboard Ornaments: 1. Cut some groovy shapes out of cardboard. 2. Paint your shapes! 3. Glue them together and glue a piece of yarn on as a hanger. Make some friends for your ornament! Sun Tree Topper: 1. Poke your matchsticks into your styrofoam ball around the circumference. 2. Stick the pins through the sequins. 3. Repeat step 2 a million times until your sun looks like this! TIP: Try using a smaller sized Christmas tree so you don’t spend the next 10 years making your decorations! Ours is a 3ft tiny tree and we love it! Now it’s time to decorate your tree! And don’t forget to share your creations with us on social media, tag @blipartschool and @kiddomag and hashtag #blipxkiddo! Blip Art School was founded by local creatives Ella James and Astrid Myers. TAFE SA offers the opportunity to turn your dreams into reality

Education is an open door that can lead you somewhere you long to be. Whether you’re looking to develop on your existing skillset, up-skill in your chosen industry, refresh expertise to re-enter the workforce, or just explore a new hobby: TAFE SA short courses are a great place to start. TAFE SA offers more than 400 short courses in a diverse range of areas, and are a great way of finessing your craft; maybe you want to enter a new industry or perhaps start a small business. Courses in cookery, art, design, hair & beauty, property and marketing are just the tip of the iceberg on what’s available. Meet Mafalda and Carla Portuguese natives, Mafalda and Carla, and their husbands João and Miguel, were feeling nostalgic for their favourite homegrown dessert; “pastel de nata”, otherwise known as the Portuguese custard tart. This longing for the flavour of home, and their enthusiasm to bring the taste of Portugal to their new country, Australia, was the start of a dream realised for the two Lisbon-born couples. In order to hone their skills in creating “pastel de nata” Mafalda and Carla completed several TAFE SA short courses to develop their proficiency for baking and patisserie. The pair have since gone on to open Adelaide’s first bakery dedicated to real Portuguese custard tarts, Saudade, located in Mitcham. We chatted to Mafalda and Carla to find out how TAFE SA helped to inspire them to pursue a love of baking and subsequently realise the dream of opening Saudade, their own specialty bakery. Tell us about where your passion for baking originated and what lead you towards a niche of Portuguese tarts? We have witnessed the Australian public really discovering Portugal as a travel destination in the last few years. The Portuguese custard tart is probably one of the most recognisable and most appreciated sweets within the Portuguese gastronomy. When thinking of opening up a small business we decided we would love to replicate the lovely treats from our homeland here in Australia, so everyone around us could have a taste of something we had yearned for, for such a long time. What made you choose to study baking at TAFE SA? We chose TAFE SA as a recognised learning institute because we believed completing a series of short courses would be a great way to dive into the venture and ascertain if this was a possible path for us to pursue. How were you inspired at TAFE SA to continue and further your studies? If we were going to replicate and sell a very special and unique product, we needed the best possible preparation. The courses at TAFE SA gave us a great foundation and knowledge tobuild on going forward, and enabled us to get a start on how to produce the best Portuguese tart in Adelaide. What skills did you acquire in your studies that have been invaluable going forward in your business, Saudade? Neither of us had any qualification in baking so learning all the basic techniques provided invaluable foundations for us to take our passion for the Portuguese tart and bring the unique flavour to Australia. Without the opportunity provided to us by TAFE SA to build a solid basis of learning and a desire to continue honing our craft, we wouldn’t be where we are today. How did completing your TAFE SA courses prepare you for the realities of baking in a commercial environment? It really provided us the tools to start the learning process on what to expect entering the world of baking in a commercial environment. Starting from the very basics and progressively becoming more confident opened our eyes to the potential of what we could create and how far we could go. Do you have any recommendations for others considering a TAFE course as a way of progressing them towards a dream or goal? If you are thinking of entering a specific professional path, TAFE SA will definitely help you acquire the skills and develop crucial tools in your chosen area! Short courses are a great way to start the learning process and build foundations for further study, or maybe, like us, even starting your own small business. Love the idea of learning more about cookery, wine or hospitality? Why not give these short courses starting soon a try!• Christmas Baking• Made in Italy• Cheese Making 101• Cured and Smoked Products• Cocktails for Fun• Espresso Coffee Making*• Introduction to Wine Tasting … and there’s something for kids too!• Christmas GingerbreadDecorating Course for kids• The Kids Kitchen For more information on courses head totafesa.edu.au/shortcourses or call 1800 882 661 *These courses contain accredited units. The ‘Sharenting’ Dilemma

How much posting on Facebook is too much? Most of us enjoy sharing a pic or two of our children from time to time doing something special. It’s even been given a name: ‘sharenting’. Most Facebook users who are uploading pictures of kids are women, mums in fact, who want to share the trials and tribulations of life with their little treasures. Thank goodness for mobile phone cameras which now allow us to never miss a moment. But therein lies the modern parent’s dilemma. Unfortunately, our phone cameras also mean it is possible to capture any special moment at any given time, so much so that we are possibly living through our smart phones rather than in the moment. Facebook is 14 years old this year and some teenagers would have had their entire lives journaled online by their parents. An online study of 1623 people conducted in 2015 by Vital Smarts looked at this ritual of taking and posting pictures of children and 58% of respondents reported that posting that perfect picture has prevented them from enjoying life experiences, and some even felt they had missed being present with their child. A question from one of our Cybersafe Families Facebook followers prompts us throw another lens on this. “I’m new to Facebook and I want to know if it’s safe for me to post pictures of my kids?” Before you hit the post button it’s important to think twice about the safety aspects and the impacts of each individual post. The web never forgets. Are your children going to be happy about their photo story when they look back over their public life?Parents are finding that their teenage children are asking for pictures of themselves to be taken down, or pleading with them not to post, because they find it embarrassing. Often a parent’s first response might be, “It’s my Facebook page and I’ll post what I like!”. Common courtesy is to ask friends and colleagues before posting a pic of them on Facebook. Are we giving our children the same right? It might be a good time to ask yourself, “Who are my Facebook friends?” Someone you sat next to at a football game back in 2007? A friend of a friend you met at a party and connected with in order to tag them in a picture? Maybe your friends list needs a clean out. After all, these are the people you are inviting to look at the aspects of our life you choose to publicly share. A good way to do this is to ask yourself, if you bumped into this person on the street would you stop and chat, pull out your purse and share your kids’ latest school picture? Would you tell them about family milestones or your new job? If the answer is no, then it’s time to do some deleting. Then check your privacy settings to ensure that only friends can view your pictures. Right now there is no way of preventing other people from sharing the photos you have posted on Facebook. You can, however, limit your pictures to friends only. This way only your friends will see your images. However, this doesn’t prevent anyone from taking screenshots of your photos and sharing them. This is why it is important to know who your friends and keep them real. The decision about what you post and how often is a personal one. Many people post pictures with the sole purpose of sharing with family and friends and staying connected, or to boost engagement with their community. This is how we roll today. It’s up to you to decide, only you can weigh up the benefits and risks so you can do what feels right for you. The office of the eSafety Commissioner shares some advice on ways to share pictures that will reduce of the risk of your photos being shared more widely than you intended. 1.The golden rule, gain consent before posting pics of other people’s children. This is easy to forget when getting caught up in the excitement of school sports day or the Christmas concert. It’s also important to consider that in any large group of children there is the possibility of a foster child whose posted photo could put them at serious risk. Best to play it safe here and be sure to only snap your own little bundle of joy. 2.Ask yourself:– Who might see it? Is anyone else in it?– Will it offend anyone?– Are there any identifying details in the photo? A picture of your child in his school uniform with his soccer club bag sitting in the background with a birthday card on the shelf will tell a predator all they need to know about where and when to find your child if they want to. 3.Sharing photos online can sometimes identify your location. Check your location settings and check which apps on your smartphone use geolocation 4.Never share anything indicating your children’s activity schedules onlineRevisit your privacy settings, and check your settings on all social media platforms. You may have overlooked something. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
