ISSUE 13 OUT NOW!

This is easily my favourite time of year… Summer + Christmas = happiness. I am a Christmas tragic, so I love carols (Drummer Boy is my fav), making Christmas pudding in a cloth (thank you grandma Tilley), eating Christmas pudding (with ice-cream + brandy sauce), visiting the Christmas Tree Farm, reading Christmas books to the kids and drinking Egg Nog (or Christmas milk, as the kids call it). This issue we chat to the wonderfully talented Tiff Manuell, whose art embodies this magical time of year, with bright colours and a truly happy summery vibe, we also get the low down from Rebecca Morse on what it was like letting her eldest daughter Gracie out of her sight, travelling overseas solo for the first time, plus we get the perfect Christmas day ice cream cake recipe from the talented kitchen whiz, Annabel Bower. Enjoy your SUMMER school holidays and having the freedom to “not do anything” ! Be kind, be safe and enjoy this magical time of the year. X CC  READ HERE

AMELIA MOSELEY: BTS WITH BTN

BTS with BTN In the News. Winning an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony, a Pulitzer or even an MTV Award would be great, right? But there’s one award that a lot of people agree is the greatest of them all because it rewards people for helping humankind. I’m talking about the Nobel Prize! It all started with a guy called Alfred Nobel (makes sense). He was a Swedish scientist in the 1800s and his most famous invention was dynamite. BOOM. While dynamite was handy for lots of things like mining or clearing the way for railway lines, it was also used a lot in war. So, legend has it, that one day a newspaper accidentally reported Alfred was dead! He wasn’t. But the article about his life said he’d become rich from killing people. Alfred really didn’t like that, so he decided that when he died for real his massive fortune would be used to set up an annual series of prizes for those who did the most to change the world for the better. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901 and they’re still given out to scientists, doctors, writers, activists and peace-keepers every single year. Each prize comes with a gold medal and a serious chunk of money – around 1.4 million Aussie dollars! Not bad. Winners often put that money back into research or charity work, because they’re just THAT nice. Nobel Prize winners include some really famous names like physicist Albert Einstein, former US President Barack Obama, The Red Cross and activist Malala Yousafzai. SHOPPING MADE EASY @HARBOUR TOWN

Shopping Made Easy @ Harbour Town with Hayley Berlingeri   We all love the fun of shopping, but if you’re like me and have little children that you need to cart around, then sometimes, it ain’t that fun! The kids end up getting bored, and then whingy, and then rowdy, and then mama in turn ends up getting cross, and then cranky, and then crotchety. And the whole thing ends in disaster, with screaming kids being wrestled out of the mall, and mum with tears welling and a brain about to burst, all the while leaving empty handed without any of the things she had gone there to get in the first place!!! But, Harbour Town has changed all that! It actually IS fun for the whole family! Harbour Town, with it’s new modern look and fresh, crisp aesthetic complete with hanging gardens in a unique outdoor shopping mall has both everyday and high-end brands at discount prices, all in the one place. The carpark is huge, so you can always find a spot within easy access to the entrance, and the wide, open air walkways make it super easy to zip around from store to store (even with three little kids and a giant double pram!). All the best premium outlets are here selling both new season and reduced stock, including my favourites like Bonds, Seed, Cotton On Kids, Levis, Kid Stuff, Smiggle, Polo Ralph Lauren, Adidas and Adairs. It makes present shopping so easy as prices are discounted and all the best brands are under the same roof (or should I say ‘same sky’! Love the outdoor vibe!). And with Christmas just around the corner (yes! You read right!! It’s only 2 months away!!) Harbour Town is the perfect place to pick up all your must-buy presents as well as a brand new summer wardrobe for the whole family! On top of all of that, there’s a stack of great cafes, a Boost Juice and array of eateries serving fabulous coffee and quick tasty food, with both indoor and outdoor dining options. But, my favourite feature of the new look Harbour Town is the FREE Nanny Service! It’s a game changer! The Outlet Nanny allows you to book in your babes and drop them off to the play zone for up to two hours! Imagine being able to shop till you drop, grab a coffee and some lunch, CHILD FREE! All while your little ones are having a blast playing with toys, doing crafting activities and drawing, while being looked after by dedicated staff! Win win, I say! Oh, and did I mention there’s a full size outdoor playground?! Happy kids, happy mama! YOUR WILD IMAGINATION IS OUT NOW WITH 20+ NATURE PLAY ACTIVITIES!

Your Wild Imagination! After a successful crowd-funding campaign, Adelaide mum and creator of Wild Imagination, Brooke Davis has now launched her nature play book for kids titled ‘Your Wild imagination’. A great Christmas pressie idea if you ask us! From 3+ years old the book is for anyone big or small who wishes to be inspired. It includes over 20 nature play activities that can be transformed by your own unique creativity. Just one of the book’s many gorgeous images is featured on our cover. As parents we are always looking for ways to avoid our kids spending too much time behind a screen. Brooke created Wild Imagination with the intention for kids to have more green time and less screen time, while allowing their imaginations to run wild and free. We spoke to Brooke about her new book and inspirations: Did you do much Nature Play as a kid? Even from my earliest memories, I have always loved nature play. Climbing trees, exploring the outdoors, making potions and mud pies, and even fishing occasionally! It’s not an uncommon story – that my strong connection with nature was lost somewhere along the path of growing up. But when I had my own children I began to realise how different their childhood was to mine – too much screen time and not enough green time. So when I started to take steps to change that, I realised that many parents were in the same boat. In 2016 I established Wild Imagination, which is a nature play program that has seen about 20,000 kids enjoy nature play with us. Tell us a bit about the content of the book? What will we find inside? It’s called Your Wild Imagination because the activities are open ended and the images are there to ignite your imagination, not prescribe how it should look in the end. The book has more than 20 activities, plus school holiday projects and is best suited to kids aged 2 – 10 years but is for anyone who would like more nature and play in their lives. Some of the activities you can expect are flower crowns, wood whittling, magic wands, nature masks and fabric printing. It is filled with beautiful images and easy to follow instructions. There is a real focus on sustainability, so you won’t need to go out and buy a bunch of materials to get going. Mostly, you will be able to use what you find in your garden or local park, combined with some items from your home or a secondhand shop. Measuring 15cm x 23cm, it’s the perfect size for little hands and fits well into a kids backpack. How did you go about getting it off the ground? Publishing a book was a daunting task, so I sought the help of others by running a crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to print the first run of books. We reached our target with a few days to spare and sold about 900 books in the process. I’m so grateful to those early supporters for helping to get it published! What’s next for Wild imagination? We’re taking a break from running our own school holiday programs for the foreseeable future, but instead we’re partnering with councils, schools and events to bring nature play to Adelaide kids. You’ll find us doing nature play activities and selling the book at various events around Adelaide (check our website for dates). Next year I’ll begin working on the second book, which has more nature play activities for primary school aged kids. Longer term, there will be more books for different ages and interests, including for tweens and adults. wildimagination.com.au @wildimaginationnatureplay

THREE NEW FLOATS REVEALED FOR THE NATIONAL PHARMACIES PAGEANT

Christmas is so close, we can almost taste the pudding! A bunch of very lucky and excited KIDDOS made their way to Stardust Castle today, for the official unveiling of three brand new floats! Adelaide MP and Minister for Child Protection Rachel Sanderson said she was thrilled by the wonder and excitement from the big and little guests, as the three floats were presented for the very first time at this year’s Christmas Pageant event launch. “The National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant is the traditional start to the festive season in South Australia, and one that will see more than 320,000 young and old, happy faces lining the new pageant route,” said Minister Sanderson. “This year we welcome National Pharmacies to the Christmas Pageant family as naming rights sponsor, and over 600 of their National Pharmacies staff and members who will be taking part in the Pageant for the very first time. “The families that were at today’s launch, were mesmerized by the magical Cinderella float, delighted with the mermaid float, and very proud to welcome the new lead National Pharmacies float. Today also signals the start of one of the most anticipated countdowns on the social calendar for South Australians as we start to count our sleeps to this year’s National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant.” Brian Gilbertson, Pageant Director, National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant said, “this year’s theme, A World Full of Wonder, is to inspire everyone to share the power of wonder – wonder how? wonder why? wonder what’s possible? We want to encourage children to wonder about the world, and adults to take a moment to reflect and remember what it’s like to dream.” “The Pageant team is very proud to present our new floats, and I am sure they will be well received and loved by the thousands of Pageant fans.  We really cannot wait to see all the excited children with their big smiles on the day,” said Brian Gilbertson. National Pharmacies Chief Executive Officer Vito Borrello said, “National Pharmacies is incredibly honored and proud to play such a significant role in one of South Australia’s most traditional and beloved events. It is a wonderful celebration for children and families, and we are thrilled to be able to be part of bringing Christmas joy to South Australians. “National Pharmacies believes in community and giving back to our members and South Australian families. Being a part of the Christmas Pageant, is something that all our members and staff are very much looking forward to.” The 2019 National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant will be held on Saturday 9 November, departing from South Terrace at 9.30 am once Sir Edward Hayward’s legendary gold whistle is blown. We love anything that’s family friendly (watching 98,0987 episodes of Bluey can get a bit old) so when AUSTRALIA’S GOT TALENT (AGT) is on it’s a time to get the popcorn on the stove sit back and enjoy. Sunday Funday! Starting Sunday 28 July expect the unexpected as AGT unleashes a new wave of mind-blowing and original acts which need to be seen-to-be-believed. Get the whole fam together to laugh and cry on the edge of your seats as Australians of all ages and from all walks of life show off their unique talent, as they vie for the $100,000 prize money. Everything and anything goes on the AGT stage as contestants set out to impress the all-new, all-star judging panel consisting of: Nicole Scherzinger; actor/presenter/entertainer, Shane Jacobson; celebrity chef and clown-at-heart, Manu Feildel; and stage and screen star Lucy Durack. This fab four bring expertise, energy and fun to the AGT arena as they search for an act like no other, offering either a “yes from me” or buzzing them out of contention. Getting the party started and guiding contestants backstage to their moment in the spotlight is host, multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter Ricki-Lee In a series first, Ricki-Lee joins the four judges in each having the one-time-only ability to use the Golden Buzzer on an act they think has that extra special something, fast tracking them through to the Semi-Finals. Which act will capture the hearts and minds of Australia? There can only be one champion. The winner of AGT 2019 will join a stellar list of extraordinary talent that the show has produced over the years including: Opera star Mark Vincent, singer/dancer Timomatic, R&B sensation Andrew De Silva, grand illusionist Cosentino, dance troupe Justice Crew and singing powerhouse Jack Vidgen INTRODUCING…..THE HOST & JUDGES! HOST – RICKI-LEE We all loved Ricki-Lee when she debuted on Australian Idol at 18, now the ARIA nominated and multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter has sold over a million records and her music has earned well over 25 million streams since Australia fell in love with her in 2004. This year marks 15 years since Ricki-Lee won the hearts of Aussies all around the country – and to celebrate she is touring nationally this September through December. How do you feel about being the host of AGT? I’m so excited to be hosting the show – it’s so much fun! I get a front row seat to watch the best talent Australia has to offer. Also, I know what it feels like to stand side of stage waiting to step out and do a performance that potentially could change your life. I understand the excitement, nerves, self-doubt, fear, worry, dry mouth and everything that’s running through your mind at that moment. Why do you think the show has been so successful around the world? It’s feel-good TV. Everybody is looking for something they can sit down and watch at the end of a hard day and just be entertained. There is no other show like it! Families and people of all ages can sit in the comfort of their lounge rooms and watch these incredible acts that will have you biting your nails, hanging on the edge of your seat, gasping with shock and screaming with excitement. What do you love about AGT? I love that there is so much variety. It’s not just confined to singers or dancers – it’s every type of weird and wonderful coming together on one stage. It’s always surprising too. Just when you thought you’d seen it all, you’ll see something that makes your jaw drop. That’s the beauty of AGT! JUDGE – SHANE JACOBSON Shane Jacobson is one of Australia’s most loved actors and presenters. Best known for his work in film, television and theatre, he’s also a song and dance man, author, screen writer, creative director, producer, executive producer, plus an ambassador for many worthy charities and organisations. The Aussie blockbuster Kenny brought Shane world-wide recognition, as well as an AFI Award for Best Lead Actor. He has gone on to feature in other popular films including Charlie & Boots, The Bourne Legacy, Oddball, The Dressmaker, The BBQ and Ladies in Black. Shane’s television career has showcased his broad range as a presenter and actor – from hosting Little Big Shots, The Real Full Monty, Top Gear Australia and The Great Australian Bake Off to roles in Beaconsfield, Jack Irish and more. On stage, Shane received a Helpmann Award for his role in the 2008 revival of Guys and Dolls. Also an author, Shane has found success penning his best-selling bio The Long Road to Overnight Success and most recently his exploration of his life as a motoring tragic in his second book, Rev Head. Why do you think the show has been so successful around the world? The one thing people love in entertainment is variety and AGT has more than its fair share! This show is like a Christmas present. It’s bright, it’s colourful, you have no idea what’s inside or what’s in store, but when you open it up, you’re always happy. And that’s what this show is like. It’s magic! What can viewers expect to see? There’s no way they can understand what to expect because there is literally everything you can possibly imagine and more! Are there going to be singers, dancers and comedians? Sure. Are there going to be magicians and contortionists? You bet. Is that all they’re going to see? Nowhere near it. I haven’t hit 30 percent of the types of acts you’re going to see. What sort of judge will you be? I’m thrilled and supportive of anyone who gets on stage and bares all in the hope of entertaining people. But unfortunately, we have to whittle the acts down. It’s heartbreaking but I like to think I’m the three F’s my dad said I should be in life and business – firm and fair but friendly. @theshanejacobson JUDGE – LUCY DURACK Originally hailing from Perth, Lucy graduated from the Western

Fuzzy faced koalas, waddling wombats, snakes, rare native birds and the ever-elusive echidna are just some of the fantastic fauna discoveries we made when KIDDO visited Cleland Wildlife Park for the day. Only 25 minutes from the Adelaide CBD, Cleland is the picture-perfect natural wonderland for a family day out and some well needed nature play. Bring a picnic and spend the day, or stop by for a wander and a scheduled wildlife talk. These school holidays, Cleland is introducing some great kids activities, including the new Wildification program. Starting April 15 you can let your children go wild at Cleland! Drop them off and relax while they take a six-hour adventure around the Park with experienced carers and highly trained educators. Wildification includes exclusive animal experiences, games, art, recess, lunch, and a totally wild day that will ensure they sleep well that night! Don’t go running off into the bushes just yet, because there’s more! Cleland also has some amazing up-close wildlife experiences, including the recently launched Butterfly Aviary and the wombat experience where you can meet Fred – the world’s friendliest wombat. Reflections from a Neuroscience Mumma: Neuroplasticity

When my son Alexander was born in July of 2017, like any new mum, I was both desperately sleep deprived and equally desperate to make sure that my precious new bubba was healthy, happy and developing well. I Googled incessantly, read all the books (cheers, Kaz Cooke, for helping me learn to laugh at my own craziness) and drove friends and family up the wall with constant questions. “Lynds, aren’t you supposed to, you know, know about this developmental stuff?” my long-suffering best friend finally asked me. You see, in addition to being the mum to the world’s most adorable little boy (my completely unbiased opinion, of course), I also happen to be a neuroscientist. And in my post-baby haze, I had completely lost sight of how much neuroscience can teach us about child development and parenting. One of the most amazing aspects of the developing brain of a child is how plastic they are- meaning that our brain function can change depending on the experiences that we have. In other words, there are a number of key windows of time when development happens in the brain regions responsible for particular functions. These periods of time are called critical periods and they represent when experience is likely to have the maximal effect for a child acquiring a particular skill or behaviour. In infancy, there is a critical period for the development of sensory functions, such as vision. As our children age into toddlerhood and early childhood, they enter the height of the critical period for motor and language development. Finally, as they continue to grow into later childhood and adolescence, they reach the height of the critical period for the development of higher cognitive functions, such as reasoning and planning. During these periods, brain cells, called neurons, in the brain regions responsible for particular behaviours form connections with one another called synapses. Mirroring the critical periods, this process first occurs in parts of the brain responsible for sensory functions, such as seeing and hearing, followed by areas important for language comprehension and production, and, finally, regions of the brain critical for higher cognitive functions, such as the prefrontal cortex. The formation of these synapses, as well as the later pruning away of unused connections in order to make the brain function more efficiently, is dependent upon the specific experiences that we have during these critical periods of time. Intriguingly, once these critical periods end, the core parts of a behaviour or skill are, for the most part, unaffected by subsequent experiences. Meaning that if our children are not exposed to appropriate stimuli during these critical periods, the behaviour may not develop normally and it may be difficult, or even impossible, to later remedy this, since the brain circuits that underlie these behaviours become less plastic. Let’s take the example of language. In order for normal language production and comprehension to develop, we need to have exposure to language from birth. So when you coo at your precious bubbas and encourage them to babble back, you’re doing more than interacting with them – you’re actually modelling language for them and helping them to develop the brain circuits that are important for this function. The brain circuits responsible for language appear to change rapidly during early life, with some researchers suggesting that the critical period for language development is the first 8-12 years of a child’s life. This was disturbingly shown by the case of a little girl named Genie, an American child born in 1957. Genie was a victim of severe neglect and social isolation until she was 13 years old. During the first 13 years of her life, she was locked alone in a dark room, was not spoken to and was discouraged from making noise. As a consequence, she never acquired language. When she was finally removed from the home, despite intensive training, she was unable to fully acquire a language. While she became quite good at nonverbal communication, acquired a significant vocabulary and learned to string two or three words together, she was unable to advance beyond this or use language in a meaningful way. While Genie’s case is extreme (and terrible), it still has given us great insights into the development of language and there are a number of lessons that parents can take from this. First, it is important to engage in conversation with your children from their very first days. Tell them about your day. Go for a walk and describe what you see along the way, pointing out the objects as you name them. Have a “conversation” and leave a pause where you are expecting your child’s response. All of these are powerful ways to encourage the development of the language circuits of the brain. Perhaps as importantly, put down the tablet and turn off the television. The Australian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for the Early Years stress that there should be no time in front of a screen for young children. What’s wrong with a bit of screen time? Well, firstly, there are no proven benefits of media exposure for infants and toddlers. In fact, research looking at TV exposure has shown that early screen exposure can lead to language delays. Even high levels of exposure to background TV can negatively affect language use and acquisition, as well as attention and other aspects of cognitive function. When children are in front of a screen, they are not engaging either in face-to-face interaction, which minimises critical exposure to language and social skills, or in play, a key way that children learn. And more concerningly, we still don’t fully understand what effects the bright, flashing lights or noise of a screen can have on developing visual and hearing circuits. Just like with language, parents can also learn lessons from the other critical periods. For example, during infancy, it is important to surround children with bold, bright colours and other visual stimuli, in order to encourage maximal development of vision. Similar lessons apply to the other
