Super Mum Amelia Ryan is Returning to Adelaide Fringe with Two More Must-See Shows

Super Mum Amelia Ryan is Returning to Adelaide Fringe with Two More Must-See Shows Simply The Breast and 80’s Baby are two shows any comedy loving parent must-see at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival. Buckle up those baby seats and enjoy the ride as Amelia Ryan, cabaret’s princess of parody takes you on an honest journey of comic relief, through childhood and motherhood. After selling out houses with ‘The Breast Is Yet To Come’, ‘A Storm in A D Cup’ and ‘Lady Liberty, Livvy & Pete’ Amelia is returning to Adelaide Fringe with all the best (breast) bits from all of them. We chatted to Amelia to see what she has been up to since last year and what we can expect this time around: It’s been a year since we last spoke to you, tell us about your new tour: I’ve got two new shows under my belt this year. For the Mama’s (and brave Dads), I’ve got ‘Simply The Breast’; a ‘best of’ featuring my favourite bits from all of my shows to date. It’s a good way to get the highlights reel, plus I’ve snuck a bunch of new motherhood material in for good measure (because let’s face it, motherhood dishes out the comedy gold!). I’m also really excited because this year, I’ve created a show for the kids! I wanted to do something I could take my 15 month old son Archie along to, so I’ve put together a singalong, dance-along show called 80s Baby! It features (you guessed it) all of the hits we danced along to back in the 80s. From WHAM! to Kylie Minogue, to Aussie favorites Peter Coombe, Don Spencer and the Tinlids. I’ve got a 3 piece band on stage with me, so it’s a great live music experience for the little ones, and it really is a joy to perform because the music is so fun! So wear your colourful 80s best and bring your dancing shoes, because you’ll be on your feet from start to finish! What can we expect this year that we didn’t see last year? Last years show was all about pregnancy…the good, bad and downright painful. This year, I’m taking my favourite bits from all of my shows, and sharing the full story; from childhood to motherhood. You’ll hear stories ranging from exotic dancing on table tops to exhaustedly cleaning up foods slops, from sordid Las Vegas romps, to sleepy late-night lactation, from growing up in a very ‘modern family’ to settling down and creating my own family. It’s an honest, relatable and hilarious celebration of womanhood and the constant quest for self-betterment. Basically if you’ve ever made questionable choices during #winetime, have a family that’s more ‘Kardashian’ then Brady Bunch, or lay awake at night wondering WTF has happened to your boobs (or pelvic floor) post-children (honestly though, where do they go?), then this one’s for you! How has mum life been treating you? I love Mum life. Though it’s completely exhausting and consuming, it keeps me present and grounded and the love is unparalleled What I find most difficult however, is combining Mum life with actual life. As Archie gets older, and his needs are greater (food, routine, stimulation, stability etc), I’ve had to reassess what we can all manage. I found it easier when he was younger and all he needed was a boob and a bed! I’ve really struggled with the balance over the past 6 months if I’m honest, but that’s motherhood, right? A constant learning curve. Is your bubs coming touring with you this time? I’ve had to make some fairly tough calls to leave Archie at home with his Dad this year. I head to Melbourne for 5 days next week, and then Perth for 7 days a few weeks later. The anxiety of leaving him is killing me! But, we have to prioritise both his needs for stability and my own mental health. Between the cost of touring the whole family and also premiering two new shows, we had to make the call for me to fly solo. It will either work or it won’t, and we’ll then be informed to make different decisions for next time. I’m learning that sometimes you can’t actual ‘do it all’! What is the secret to juggling mum life and showbiz life? Support, support, and support. I have a very supportive and understanding fiancé, and I’ve been extremely lucky that my Mum retired in 2017. She’s been able to tour with us, or come and stay when we’re in ‘peak season’. She lives in NSW, but comes over regularly. I NEVER take this for granted and am extremely grateful. We also have very supportive family and friends here in Adelaide. I write, perform and produce my own shows, so like many busy Mama’s, my day can start at 6am when Archie wakes and finish at 12am when I finish my daily to-do list. It’s a constant hustle that feels never ending. We also just need to be really organised (still working on this one) and actively schedule in times of the year where I won’t take on any gigs. The family needs some down time! What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Adelaide Fringe? Without a doubt being able to dress up in crazy 80s clothes! Oh…and giving the Mama’s a well deserved girls night out, with a wine and a good laugh during Simply The Breast. Amelia has two shows at the Fringe – Simply The Breast and Amelia Ryan’s 80’s Baby – tickets are available at adelaidefringe.com.au ameliaryan.com

Rebecca Morse: Festival + Family = Fun

Festival + Family = Fun Straight out of the eating, drinking and socialising haze of the Festive Season comes the eating, drinking and socialising haze of the Festival Season. Welcome ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, to Frantic February and Mad March, where I will attempt to perform my own magic tricks to stop my little ones saying, “I’m bored” and stop my teen binge-watching Brooklyn 99 by dazzling them with the fun-filled family adventure that is exploring the offerings of the Adelaide Fringe. How lucky are we that our hometown plays host to Australia’s biggest and most successful open access arts festival? We can see some of the biggest names in comedy, catch a sexy cabaret show on a night out with the grown-ups or just stroll through the Garden of Unearthly Delights, Gluttony and the RCC and pick a show for the kids. I want my children to grow up exposed to and appreciative of the kind of culture and art that has to be experienced outside the confines of a screen in the palm of their hands. So, how do I choose what we see? Well, I’ll be honest, the suitability and age- appropriateness of some of my selections has been determined by trial and error over the years. Some of the errors include taking the teen to an otherwise harmless performance that included a flash of full frontal male nudity. I think my speedy parental reflexes managed to cover her eyes just in time. I was very thorough in my examination of when it was safe for her to resume watching because I take supervision seriously. (Best also to be careful when selecting shows with puppetry in the title, if you get my drift.) I must also confess that some mildly offensive language has slipped through my strict parenting net, but given I have been known to swear like a sailor on rare occasions (very rare occasions when I am under extreme mental duress like performing any form of housework) my little ruffians did not raise an eyebrow. You know what you could try? Take the family to see a magician/illusionist and see if they can make you vanish for just enough time to allow you to sneak out and grab a rosè and a bowl of carbs. Rest-assured, I do also consult the section of the Fringe guide that’s pitched specifically at young and impressionable audiences. For example, I enjoy exposing my flexibility- challenged offspring to child circus performers to encourage them to, at the very least, persevere with learning how to do a cartwheel, use a hula- hoop, or perform a dif cult balancing act on an unstable tightrope of emotion to equip them for the challenges of adulthood. Or one of the many choral and musical shows on offer may provide you and your family with an unique opportunity to raise your voices together in song rather than frustration. During festival season, Womad is another wonderful way to expose your children to peace and harmony. My kids love experiencing the sounds of world music and the smells of exotic food, although it’s the chocolate-filled donuts that always seem to be the aroma most enticing for them. Tickets aren’t cheap but the entertainment is world-class (hence the name), kids under 12 get in for free and there are discounts for under 18s. And if you, the small people, or the other half are suffering from Festival fatigue or are more into the sports than the arts, don’t despair, the Superloop Adelaide 500 and the return of footy season are just around the corner. Happy Festival families!

MEET: Creative Ambassador Gavin Wanganeen

Creative Ambassador Gavin Wanganeen  When you hear the name Gavin Wanganeen, you immediately think – Port Power legend. However, in addition to his many on-field accolades and legendary AFL status, Gavin is also father to 5 gorgeous children, Mia, Tex, Kitty, Lulu and Posey, husband to the very sweet Pippa and now in his second life, carving out a beautiful career as an acclaimed contemporary visual artist. His pieces are not only aesthetically appealing, but they take you to a place beyond the here and now, as Gavin explores links to his Aboriginal heritage and the Kokatha people through his art. He was recently announced as an Ambassador for The Fringe and we were so thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down and chat all things Arts, Adelaide and The Fringe with Gavin and his lovely wife Pippa. PIPPA What is your favourite Fringe memory? When I first came back to Adelaide after being away in South Africa and then Melbourne for a few years, I co-hosted an online show that covered the Adelaide Fringe; Fringe TV. It was so fun to be back in Adelaide, connecting with other artists and performers (many of whom I studied with at Uni) and covering all the shows. I did a story on a beautiful show that was held at the Adelaide Gaol, and I included a little piece with my cute stepchildren; Mia and Tex. They were so young then, and I remember how magical it was seeing their eyes open up to the wonder of the Arts scene. Now, I get to continue the wonder with my three little girls, who are also great supporters of the Arts and the Adelaide Fringe. What are you looking forward to seeing this year? All of it, but particularly Yabarra, Gathering Of Light! It is just the most wonderful time to be in Adelaide, and to enjoy the best of South Australia. The local and International performers bring an incredible vibe to the city, and I love going to as many shows as I can. You must be very excited that Gavin has been recognised as an Arts Ambassador for the Fringe this year, how does his art influence the family? Gavin’s transition from AFL player to Artist is such a wonderful story, and we are all so proud of him. It’s been fantastic to see him supported and embraced by the Arts community, particularly with his appointment as an Ambassador of the Adelaide Fringe (my favourite festival IN THE WORLD)! Gavin’s Art, has given our family more connection to his Aboriginal culture, and has opened up conversations about his incredible family history. His art allows us to honour and celebrate his Aboriginal heritage. Do you have a creative outlet that you can share with us? I have always been a lover of fashion, travel and the arts! They bring me great joy, and through them I am constantly inspired to create. I love styling interiors, children’s fashion, and pulling looks together for myself too. I love that platforms such as Instagram give us an opportunity to engage with each of these creative outlets, everyday. Have the kids inherited Gavin’s artistic genes? Haha I think they have inherited his sporting AND artistic genes! But, time will tell! GAVIN How did you get involved with the Adelaide Fringe and what about your role are you most excited about? Now that I am being recognised as a Contemporary Indigenous Artist, it has been such an honour to be embraced by the wider Arts community, including the Adelaide Fringe Festival. I’m just so thrilled to be able to represent visual artists, but most importantly the Indigenous community, through my role as Ambassador. Adelaide really comes alive during the Fringe festival and the buzz it creates is indescribable. What is your favourite Fringe memory? When our youngest daughter Posey was only 7 days old, Pippa and I decided to take all 5 children into The Garden, for dinner and to see some shows together. It was wonderful to enjoy being together as a family, in such a vibrant and exciting space. I can’t remember what shows we saw (we were pretty sleep deprived) but I will never forget how happy we all were to be at the Adelaide Fringe with our newest tiny family member! Top show to see with kids? Bubble Show How does the Fringe support Indigenous culture?  The Adelaide Fringe has always showcased incredible Indigenous talent and venues, through their continued support of groups like Yellaka, Djuki Mala, and a number of other Indigenous artists in various artistic fields. Their decision to include me as an ambassador, is so humbling and a further example of their commitment to supporting Indigenous Culture. I cannot wait to see the Opening Ceremony which will be a phenomenal celebration of Indigenous Culture, one you will not want to miss! When did your passion for art surface? A few years after my football career ended, my wife Pippa encouraged me to finish a painting I had begun but never finished, many years before. I finished it, and started painting more and haven’t looked back since. I love how it brings me closer to my culture, and I have learned so much about my family history during this time. What inspires you?  I paint about the stars and the night sky. I imagine I am sitting up in the highest point in the universe, looking down through the stars, to Country. My Great Grandfather lived an incredible and challenging life, and his courage, grace and humility are a huge inspiration to me, and my art. Do you create art at home with the kids? Yes! The little girls have thrown their toys, fingers and clothes into my artworks, and it all adds special character and story to the work! They have grown up watching me paint at the kitchen table, and I feel it is a great way for them to learn about their Kokatha heritage.   As Fringe

REVIEW: The I Hate Children Children’s Show

REVIEW: The I Hate Children Children’s Show Date: Monday March 12, 2018 Location: The Flamingo at Gluttony Loud, colourful and like one big sugar rush, The I Hate Children Children’s Show is not your ordinary kids show. Paul Dabek, with his talented band The Kidnappers, perform an energetic show full of comedy, magic and rock & roll – appealing to both little and big people. Songs including Pocket Money Blues and Magic Bag of Disappointment have the crowd laughing at the same time, but for different reasons. Paul is an excellent performer; quick witted and cheeky. But beware – audience members are enticed on stage, and he doesn’t hold back with the kids. They are often the butt of the jokes … but at the delight of the cackling parents. The kids don’t care though. They dance and sing and laugh along and by show’s end Paul has them eating out the palm of his hand. The final song includes flying marshmallows, floating flamingoes, acrobatics, a guitar solo and a bubble machine. All the ingredients for a cool kids – and maybe parents – party. So Paul proves (I think) he doesn’t really hate children! Shows run until Sunday, March 18. Instagram: @theihatechildrenshow Facebook: @ihatechildren By Kate Younie @big_little_words

REVIEW: Djuki Mala, Opening Night

Djuki Mala, Opening Night The Factory at The Garden of Unearthly Delights Date: Monday March 5, 2018 Out on a Monday night. What?! I know. And there was dancing. Lots of dancing. Mum’s gone wild! But for a very good reason, to see multi-award winning Djuki Mala – and it was excellent. Direct from Elcho Island in North East Arnhem Land, Djuki Mala is an Indigenous dance sensation, which fuses traditional Yolngu and contemporary pop dance. The audience is pushed and pulled between past and present, being told a cultural story through dance, which had everyone crying and laughing all at once. A multimedia backdrop links the elements of their journey together, from north of Australia to the world’s stage.   The five cast members are engaging, spirited and very, very funny. The traditional dance elements were absolutely memorising. They perform to a unique play list including Greek dance, musical theatre, Michael Jackson & 90’s pop. But it works. Big time. And when mixed together, it results in a huge explosion of energy; sixty minutes of pure infectious joy. At party’s end, we all give a big standing ovation and a little happy dance as we enter back into the unearthly garden, which delivered an absolute gem and delight. The reviews are right. It is the must see show of the Fringe. By Kate Younie @big_little_words Season runs Monday 5th – 18th March. Website: djukimala.com Instagram: @djuki_mala Facebook: djukimalaoffical

REVIEW: Puppetry of the Penis

Adelaide Fringe Festival Puppetry of the Penis The Vagabond at The Garden of Unearthly Delights 28 Feb – 18 Mar Nudity level: Frequent (and hilarious) [Warning: This review may contain traces of nuts] If you go in to Puppetry of the Penis expecting anything other than two blokes jumping around naked and playing with their dicks for an hour, then you’ll be disappointed. The long and short of it (see what I did there?) is, it’s a dick show. And a damn funny one at that. Opening night of Puppetry was admittedly my first (and possibly last) opportunity to have an hour-long stare at a penis, as Rich and Barry (I feel it’s appropriate that we’re now on a first name basis) performed the ancient art of genital origami for a packed crowd of women and a handful of brave fellas who were clearly going home after the show to practise in the privacy of their own homes. Being front row at the dick show is an eye-opening experience to say the very least. Rest assured, if you get a seat at the back, every inch of the action is projected onto a big screen so you won’t miss any of the bulge bending, phallus folding, cobra contorting action by not being up close and personal. The show is straight up funny, whilst not for the faint hearted or prudish (and you might not want to go with your boss or your highly conservative mother in law); it’s cheeky, it’s mischievous, and although I feel a bit weird saying it, kind of charming! The guys fold, twist, bulge and scoop their junk into various objects, animals and landmarks (the Loch Ness Monster and Miley Cyrus on her wrecking ball(s) my personal favourites), all the while engaging in witty banter, social commentary and some spot-on pop culture references. If, like me, you think Rich is a bit cute walking in there then let me just say that avoiding all eye contact is going to be damn near impossible. And I think you know which eye I’m talking about. A little bit of audience participation went a long way, and by the end of it my face actually hurt from laughing. Their penises may have been flaccid, but the act certainly wasn’t! If you’re up for a good laugh and don’t mind a side of peen-burger, get onto it! FRINGE TIX  Website: Puppetry of the Penis Instagram: @puppetryofthep Facebook: @puppetryofthepenis

REVIEW: Big Tops & Tiny Tots Circus Show

Big Tops & Tiny Tots Circus Show Adelaide Fringe Festival The Bally at Gluttony 24 Feb – 18 Mar: Saturdays & Sundays + Public holiday Monday Tickets available www.adelaidefringe.com.au Some people might call a group of children ‘a migraine’ (me.. it’s me.. I call a group of children a migraine). However, Luth Wolff, the solo performer of the one-woman circus show Big Tops & Tiny Tots, could be forgiven for calling it ‘a guffaw’ of children, since that’s the sound that echoed across The Bally at Gluttony for much of her engaging, interactive and thoroughly entertaining 45-minute circus show. The plate spinning, hula hooping, unicycling extravaganza, which has been designed with ‘tiny tots’ in mind, completely captivated its audience of little people (as well as their parents) with non-stop circus tricks, slapstick comedy, a hint of magic and just the right amount of silliness to maintain an infectious trill of giggles peeling across the tent throughout. With some cleverly placed educational aspects and a good amount of audience participation, this is a show that ticks boxes for both parents and their tiny tots alike. Luth builds a quick and easy rapport with the children (aged predominantly 2-6 years) and is energetic, charmingly likeable and has clear circus cred with tricks that kind of make you wish you could run off and join the circus yourself! If you’re looking for one show to take your kids to this year at the Adelaide Fringe, this might just be it. Instagram: @solid_state_circus Facebook: @solidstatecircus Website: Solid State Circus

REVIEW: Rose Callaghan’s ‘Will You Accept This Rose?’ at Adelaide Fringe

Rose Callaghan – Will you accept this rose Adelaide Fringe Festival Howling Owl 20 Feb – 24 Feb Leaving at the end of Rose Callaghan’s Adelaide Fringe comedy show “Will You Accept This Rose” sort of feels like leaving a pub where you have just met a hilarious drunk chick at the bar that you’re now convinced is your new best friend. It takes a lot to get me out of the house on Married at First Sight dinner party night, but I was willing to make the sacrifice for a show inspired by The Bachelor, reality TV dating, and Rose Callaghan’s real-life journey of singledom, bad dates, and awkward [sometimes gory] sexual encounters and hook ups. As a long-time devotee of The Bachelor franchise myself, Rose told all the right jokes about all the right contestants, but having watched every episode from all 22 seasons of the show is not a prerequisite to enjoying Rose’s material. The show has some of its best laugh out loud moments when Rose reels off a succession of personal dating stories, complete with her charming brand of honest and self-deprecating humour and an uninhibited use of gloriously offensive expletives in all the best moments of some of the worst [and most shockingly hilarious] stories you’ve possibly ever heard about dating. A couple of moments of forgotten material were more than made up for with some priceless off the cuff audience banter, reaffirming that Rose really is that funny girl you kind of wish you were friends with. Definitely one to swipe right for. Tickets available FringeTix Instagram: @operation_rosie Facebook: @rosecallaghan4lyf

This shared idea acted as a point of inspiration for the narrative, contemporary painting, dance and instrumental music that were created by the Aboriginal artists in this production. These artistic forms were used as a means of interpreting the natural features of the landscape in an indigenous mythological context. Through its sensor and infrared cameras, allows the children to interact, play and perform in the production and provides an immersive experience of the artwork. This also provides a unique experience for parents and teachers as they watch the children become involved.
