A taste of South Australia There’s a world of flavours to delight foodies of all ages, all in one place in Rundle Mall. Get a free taste of South Australia in Rundle Mall this April, with the return of last year’s successful Urban Pantry and Cellar Door and the I Choose SA Grazing Trail, as part of Tasting Australia. A free kids cooking program, called Taste Buds, is a new addition to the 2018 Tasting Australia program in Rundle Mall. TASTE BUDS Kids can discover their inner foodie with Taste Buds – a FREE program designed exclusively for 7-12 year olds – to engage them in food, nutrition, food provenance and preparation. Develop young palates with this fun hands-on and sensory approach to food right in the heart of Rundle Mall. Sessions will be led by food celebrities, chefs, producers, artists and gardeners who champion fresh, seasonal, local produce. The Taste Buds program includes three sessions: FOOD FACTS: Do you know where your food comes from? Taste Buds celebrity presenter/chef will lead kids through a food fact journey teaching them about the origins of food. Kids will work with the presenter to create a delicious nutritious recipe to munch on. PLANT A SALAD: Come and join ABC’s Gardening Australia presenter, Sophie Thomson, and The Garden Guru’s presenter, Kim Syrus, to learn how to grow your supper. Kids will learn great gardening tips along with identifying, planting and harvesting from the Taste Buds culinary garden. FOOD ART: Kids are guided, step-by-step, to create artwork involving food by local artist Kirsty Shadiac from Art Venture. Participants will learn how to draw food images and then take home their masterpiece to show off to their family. Taste Buds is a FREE event, at Stephens Place in Rundle Mall from April 13-22. Hold on to your broomsticks and watch out for fighting trees and flying snitches! The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has announced the return of the Harry Potter Film Concert Series. This performance will see the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsTM projected onto a 40-foot high-definition screen, whilst Nicholas Buc conducts a 75 piece orchestra live on stage. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce children of all ages to the wonders of live classical music, with a world-class orchestra making this blockbuster classic come alive. Last year’s concert was a sell out. The Italian piazza experience coming to George Street On Sunday 15 April the aroma of wood-oven pizza and food from local restaurants will waft through the air, as George Street Piazza is filled with joyous event goers and families eager to taste and explore local Norwood delights. The event will be hosted by The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters and see George Street transformed into a bustling and vibrant Italian piazza (public square), paying homage to the rich Italian heritage within the area. This is what our children need to become happy, balanced, creative, wonderful beings. Did you have an active childhood? My childhood was all about being outdoors. I grew up in the Adelaide Hills and on the plains and my days would be filled with exploring. I would ride my horses, ride my pee wee 50 motorbike, take the dingy out on the dam, run under the huge irrigation sprinkler on the farm. The experiences and risks I took as a child were out of this world, but I survived and want nothing more than my son to have the same experiences. What inspired Twig & Stick? It stemmed from the Adelaide Hills Outdoor Playgroup, which I created four years ago, based at The Old School Community Garden in Stirling. I wanted my son to be exposed to the outdoors from as young as possible and to meet like-minded folk from the hills and build a community around us, as we were new to the area. It was a huge success for the local community and has become a wonderfully welcoming space for hundreds of children and families. Tell us a bit about the feedback you have had from kids themselves? Children who attend Twig & Stick events are always so thrilled to create wonderful pieces of art and to explore new skills and nature. They are always eager to come back over and over again. I recently received an email from a parent saying her son had put all his creations in his garden and was so proud of his whittled sticks. Seeing the joy and confidence grow when they attend is something parents notice and comment on frequently. It makes me so very proud and happy. This is all the more riesling to find someone to watch the kids, un wine and take time to smell the rosés at Cellar Door Fest this weekend! Yes we did just fit 3 wine puns into once sentence. All puns aside South Australia’s most awarded food and beverage festival, Cellar Door Fest, returns to the Adelaide Convention Centre, 2 – 4 March, shining a spotlight on many of state’s leading wineries, breweries, distilleries and food producers. Celebrating its eighth year in 2018, the popular festival brings the regions to the City for three days of tastings, long table dining, master classes, intimate “DIY” workshops and more. This festival is set to the biggest Cellar Door Fest to date, featuring 180 producers from 17 South Australian regions. 180 producers, that’s a lot of wine tastings…. wine not? “Cellar Door Fest is a fantastic showcase of South Australia’s vibrant food, wine, beer and spirits scene – it’s all about bringing the State’s best to the heart of the City,” comments Simon Burgess, General Manager, Adelaide Convention Centre, hosts of the annual Cellar Door Fest. “To think the event started as an experiment in 2011 and is now not only a permanent fixture on the State’s festival calendar, but also South Australia’s most awarded food and beverage festival, speaks to its strong and enduring consumer appeal.” SPOTLIGHT ON EMERGING WINEMAKERS South Australia’s global reputation as a ‘Great Wine Capital’ will again be on show at Cellar Door Fest, with a fantastic representation of the state’s principal wineries in attendance. New in 2018, the event will shine a special spotlight on a new wave of winemakers hitting the South Australian wine scene. Presented as a dedicated zone within the Festival, the ‘Emerging Winemakers’ area will highlight 20 wineries that have only been in the industry for three years or less, providing opportunity for guests to discover some great new drops. As part of the event’s celebration of new winemaker talent, local wine hero and Cellar Door Fest 2018 Wine Ambassador, Paul Henry, will host the ‘Emerging Winemakers Kitchen Table’ – a free festival feature across the event – offering in-depth insight into the state’s latest emerging winemakers, and of course, providing opportunity to sample their wines. WHAT’S ON THE BEER GARDEN AND DISTILLERY DISTRICT Cellar Door Fest is not however just about wine. In recent years the Festival has expanded to showcase the state’s budding craft brewing and distillery industries, both of which will also be well represented. The Beer Garden returns in 2018 complemented by a series of new events specially crafted for the beer enthusiast. Kids and adults can roam with the dinosaurs in a new super sized, high tech exhibition at the South Australian Museum. Nothing thrills the child within us more than setting off on an adventure to discover the wonders of the South Australian Museum. From Indigenous artefacts, marine life skeletons from the deepest oceans to the eerie mummy in the Egyptian exhibit, it’s a virtual trip around the world. Now visitors can go back in time (just like in Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures!) with a new touring exhibition from Gondwana Studios: Dinosaur rEvolution.     This exhibition is rich in natural history specimens and has a large number of colourful artworks to illustrate scenes or ‘windows’ into dinosaur life. The exhibition displays the horns, scales, quills, spikes, and claws, which made the armour of these prehistoric creatures. South Australian Museum and Flinders University researcher Professor Mike Lee has spent his career researching reptile evolution and will help to curate the scientific content in the exhibition. “This exciting exhibition showcases the latest discoveries on how dinosaurs became birds,” Professor Lee says. “Children are always fascinated with dinosaurs but many adults will be just as engrossed. The exhibition is not just about bones and fossils, it brings these incredible creatures to life through animatronics, 3D models, life-sized murals and fossil casts that visitors can actually touch.” Exceptionally well preserved fossils found in China have shown feathers and quills present in dinosaur skin for the first time. Look behind the curtain at Adelaide Festival Centre’s Open Day It’s Access All Areas on Sunday 11 February for the largest and most ambitious Open Day ever held at Adelaide Festival Centre! Doors will be open between 11am – 4pm and with large crowds expected, attendees are encouraged to come early and enjoy the Kaurna opening ceremony at 10am. Thousands of people are expected to tour the backstage areas, workshops, technical suites and dressing rooms usually reserved for cast and crew and explore the Festival Theatre’s reopened foyers and the brand new Walk of Fame which honours 133 of the artists who have graced Adelaide Festival Centre stages since 1973. A spectacular Kaurna ceremony, led by Jamie Goldsmith & Taikurtinna, will celebrate the significance of the Festival Centre’s Riverbank setting at 10am, followed by a Kaurna Smoking Ceremony and an official Welcome to Country. Premier and Minister for the Arts Jay Weatherill will officially open Adelaide Festival Centre’s recent redevelopment before announcing the start of Open Day. Between 11am – 4pm, visitors can follow a trail through the Festival Theatre, Dunstan Playhouse and Space Theatre. The self-guided tour will explore backstage and technical areas, dressing rooms, and more.
