Join The Club

Join The Club The Baby Cino Club (TBCC) was born out of a desire to create an inclusive community for parents, to feel less isolated, more connected and ultimately supported, TBCC is growing weekly as more parents get involved. It’s such a wonderful concept that we are so on board with and FYI they also sell really cute merch to raise money for their monthly events (that team KIDDO are all wearing). We sat down with founder, Hannah Dobson, to find out more. How did the idea for The Baby Cino Club come about? The idea evolved from my CAFHS mothers group of soul sisters; being surrounded by parents who were in the thick of it just like me got me through those first months of parenting. These mums were non judgemental, supportive and we all kept an eye out for each other. I kept meeting mums outside the group who didn’t have what I had and I wanted to make them feel less isolated and more connected. Connection exists via social media, but it’s lacking the core needs for humans; we need a real person, a sense of humour, an understanding soul to remind you that you’re doing a good job. I wanted to replicate what I had but on an all-inclusive level; so here I am giving it my best shot. What is the TBCC and what does it offer? The Baby Cino Club is a non-exclusive social group for mums, dads, grandparents – whoever. We’re a playgroup with deeper ideals and a safe environment for parents to talk and feel supported. A coffee (tea, or babycino) and a zero-judgement space to socialise, because being stuck at home with the kids all day can make you crazy. Parents don’t need endless advice; nurture comes naturally. They need reminded “yes, you’re doing a good job, you’re a good parent”. Pressure needs to be taken off expectations put on parents and I hope TBCC does this. Why is it important for parents to connect? We live in an age where we’re always connected but have never been so disconnected. Humans need other humans. Lonely isn’t a nice feeling, especially for parents, and places to meet other parents are few and far between. By connecting parents they know they’re not alone. Why is it important to embrace the “it takes a village” mentality when it comes to raising children? We all have a role in raising children, it requires more than 1-2 adults to teach them everything. There are so many lessons that are vital in the life of a child- they learn from grandparents, teachers, members of the community, aunts, uncles, babysitters; everyone’s role is vital. What have you loved the most about connecting with like-minded parents? That even though we have all different kinds of people and parenting styles, we support each other. I’ve loved how amazing these parents are, how normal they make me feel and how much I’ve laughed. How can people get involved? Come along and join us, see if you like the club and if it’s something you would like to be a part of! Jervois Street, Plympton at 10am Wednesdays and Thursdays (weather permitting). We sell merch to raise revenue for our monthly events and we love partnering with businesses. Your best advice for new parents?
You’re doing a good job; you know what you’re doing, don’t doubt yourself. thebabycinoclub.com @the_baby_cino_club

This Summer Don’t Forget The…

This Summer Don’t Forget The… Summer is well and truly here, forget about swimsuit anxiety, nothing brings on panic faster than trying to prepare for every possible situation that can arise on a day at the beach with children. Hot sand, too much sun, wind, hungry, thirsty… you get the idea. What sets out to be a perfect day at the beach can end up with everyone retreating back to the car and heading for the relative sand-free calm of home. But having a well-stocked bag for a day at the beach can alleviate all (okay, most) things that stand in the way of a fun day on the coast. In everyday life, a mother’s handbag is like a scene from Mary Poppins. A random assortment of items both useful (and not) that can solve almost any situation. So, how do we create the same effectiveness in a beach bag? At National Pharmacies, we’re parents, so we understand what’s needed to turn testing moments into happy ones. That’s why we’ve put together the products that we think are all worth some space in that massive beach sack. Sunscreen It’s an obvious one. But what’s worth noting is how much sunscreen formulas have changed. There are now more options available that can make tackling the regular sunscreen application to an impatient, wet, sandy child, far less stressful. Come and see our helpful staff and we’ll make sure you’re armed with what you need for your next beach adventure. Talcum Powder It’s a little-known fact that before getting back into the car, one of the best ways to remove sticky sand off little people is with talcum powder. Don’t knock it until you try it, a small container of inexpensive talc will soon be your beach #lifehack. Vaseline / Zinc cream If your children can’t get enough of the ocean, then the combination of salt water and bathers, boardshorts or rashies, can make chaffing a painful reality. It sounds strange, but Vaseline or zinc cream applied in those areas before the day begins can provide a barrier that will stop the problem before it begins. Children’s Pain Relief It’s little surprise that the combination of lots of running around, maybe not drinking enough water and high glare can bring on a headache. And if some time under the umbrella and a big dose of water doesn’t do the trick, having some handy pain relief can be a big help. Pain relief for children now comes in so many different formulas but our friendly staff can help make sure you have something that will suit everyone’s needs. Lip Balm / Zinc Lips are easily burnt and need protection so a tube of lip balm will prevent sunburn and also windburn. Another great option for kids that are reluctant to put on ‘lipstick’ is coloured zinc, which is fun and also a great way for you to know they have it on! Hydralyte Sachets of hydralyte are a smart way to keep little people hydrated – without them even realising. Sachets come in a range of great flavours and are easy to put into a bag and be added to drink bottles on the go. And before you head to the beach, consider putting some of the ready made Hydralyte icy poles in the freezer – perfect for giving the kids an extra hit of hydration when you get back home – added bonus, it’ll feel like a treat. So, there you have it! Our list of the obvious and not so obvious inclusions in a beach bag to help make beach life a breeze. We’ll now leave it up to you to collect the bathers, the rashies, the boogie boards, the hats, the thongs, the sunglasses, the snacks, the lunch, the goggles, the bucket, the spade, the sun shelter….. And enjoy summer with a little wisdom from National Pharmacies nationalpharmacies.com.au Edit

Mega Adventure’s New GIANT Swing!

Mega Adventure‘s New GIANT Swing! The Holidays are in full swing at Mega Adventure with the addition of their new 18M GIANT SWING! Lazing by the pool this summer just got a whole lot less interesting when the alternative is a heart-pumping 18m Giant Swing experience at West Beach! That’s right, ban all screen time, hop in the car and take your holiday activities to new heights! Just in case Mega Adventure’s SkyChallenge (which has more than 80 aerial crossings, a free-fall jump and the Crows Nest – a 30-metre, near-vertical climb wasn’t already enough action packed, exhilarating fun…. It’s time to try the park’s newest attraction. The new Giant Swing combines the thrill of swinging fast and high through the air with gorgeous ocean views, an activity sure to get the adrenaline racing. We’ve featured Mega Adventure in our “57 Things to do in Adelaide with Kids” article. Mega Adventure’s General Manager, Stephen Grundy, says: “The swing is something we’ve had in mind since we opened the park and we think our guests are going to love it, it’s quite a thrilling experience,” he says. “It’s been inspired by some successful rides in New Zealand.” Riders are strapped into their seat at ground level, before being winched up to 18m off the ground where they release the swing. Expect squeals of trepidation and delight! Both the swing and top of the SkyChallenge rewards climbers with beautiful 360-degree views taking in the ocean, city and Adelaide Hills. “The SkyChallenge takes several hours so the great thing about the Giant Swing is that it’s a shorter experience for people who don’t have much time,” Mr Grundy says. “The swing takes about half an hour with the ride itself lasting just under 10 minutes, so it’s an opportunity for more people to come and enjoy our park.” Mega Adventure is now celebrating its third birthday and has become a popular destination for thrill seekers of all ages, including families, work groups and even pre-wedding parties. “When we launched, we really introduced aerial adventure to Adelaide and we’ve made it accessible to a wide audience. It’s the ultimate in outdoor fun,” Mr Grundy says. Mega Adventure caters for all ages and abilities and provides the ideal day out for families wanting some screen-free outdoor fun over the school holidays. Online bookings are recommended. The Giant Swing has a minimum height restriction of one metre, but never fear littlee’s can have their fun on the MegaBounce instead. Mega Adventure is open daily from 10am to 6pm and is located within Adelaide Shores, on the corner of Military Road and Hamra Avenue, West Beach. One of the most ‘awesome’ models in the exhibition is a full-scale LEGO® replica of the new, eighth generation Toyota Camry, which is 616 LEGO® studs long, 230 LEGO® studs wide, and weighs over a tonne! The Toyota Camry will be showcased alongside a number of record-breaking models, including the only life-sized LEGO® Harley Davidson ever made, and the largest ever LEGO® Caterpillar 797 dump truck. Adding to the awesomeness is the tallest LEGO® model in the Southern Hemisphere – a NASA SLS rocket, standing at a whopping 7.5m tall and built from more than 450,000 bricks! Taking more than 500 hours to build, Ryan has pushed LEGO® building boundaries by installing an in-built lighting and sound system, giving the effect that the rocket is blasting off into space. Visitors will be forgiven for thinking they have stepped inside a zoo, as they find themselves surrounded by a LEGO® kangaroo, koala, giant orca whale and even a full-sized LEGO® Australian saltwater crocodile, weighing over 60kgs and built using more than 40,000 LEGO® bricks. Ryan said: “I’m excited to finally be bringing Brickman Awesome to Adelaide. It’s an amazing city and when we brought our previous exhibitions they were incredibly well received – South Australians really do have such huge enthusiasm for LEGO! “My team and I have had a great time building all these record-breaking models, so I can’t wait to share them with fans and families in Adelaide. January’s theme is quite broad. The models in the exhibition are pretty diverse, so whether you’re an animal lover, a car fanatic, or you have a love of travel, there really is something for everyone – young and old!” In addition to seeing the models that Ryan and his team have created, LEGO® fanatics will have the opportunity to show off their own building skills at Brickman Awesome. Visitors can help the Brickman team expand its colony of LEGO® Emperor penguins and also build their very own time machines, even putting them on display next to Ryan’s LEGO® models of Doctor Who’s TARDIS and the DeLorean from Back to the Future! They can also help the team smash yet another LEGO® record by contributing to Australia’s longest LEGO® model – a giant snake. The Brickman team has already built the head and the tail but it needs all budding brickies who visit the exhibition to help build the belly. “I love to see kids and adults getting stuck in and letting their imaginations run wild with what they can build, and that’s why at Brickman Awesome there’ll be two million LEGO® bricks just for visitors to build with and display their creations. Adelaide – if you’re up for the challenge – show us how AWESOME you are!” added Ryan. 10 January – 27 January 2019 Tickets on sale now!  ticketek.com.au www.brickmanawesome.com.au

Want to Know About the Benefits of Messy Play?

Want to Know About the Benefits of Messy Play? Looking for some ideas to help keep your little ones occupied during the holiday period? Goodstart Early Learning have got you covered with some great advice on how to help your child to explore, create and discover through every child’s favourite activity….messy play. Children are naturally active learners and can learn so much through play. Play allows them to explore, discover, negotiate, take risks, create meaning and solve problems – all important foundations for developing literacy, numeracy and social skills throughout a child’s early years. Messy and sensory play can be an especially valuable learning experience for babies and children because it stimulates many senses at the same time. They can feel, see, smell and sometimes taste their messy creation, depending on the activity. Messy play experiences like water play, mud play, jelly, slime, goo, foam and scented or edible play dough can all stimulate your child’s senses while they develop their hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. As a parent, it can be hard to embrace ‘mess’, but the good news is there are lots of ways you can set up opportunities for messy play at home and in the natural world that won’t take too much effort to set up (or clean up!). To minimise mess, make sure you cover surfaces and have a damp cloth ready to wipe sticky hands and surfaces. Ideas for messy and sensory play for little ones: • Bath time – playing with water by using plastic cups or washed up yoghurt pots to pour, splash and empty water • Meal times / food – let your child savour the taste, smell and texture of different foods (pasta, cereals, jelly, mashed potato and even baked beans all provide interesting sensory experiences) • Finger painting – on paper or let your child experiment by painting parts of their own body or other surfaces (hint: you may prefer to use edible paint for this. Trying making a batch of instant vanilla pudding and mix with food colouring) • Play dough – let them squish, squeeze, splat and squelch to their hearts’ content • Bubbles – who doesn’t love bubbles? Use bubble mixture, frothy washing up liquid bubbles in a container, or experiment by mixing shaving foam with paint • Natural world – whether you find some sand to play with, puddles to jump in, leaves to gather, or mud to play in, there are endless outside play ideas Remember, as with all play there are always safety considerations to keep in mind. This is particularly true with water-based activities or choking hazards. Parents shouldn’t be afraid to let things get messy. So, roll up your sleeves and have some fun engaging in messy play with your child. What might look like a mess on the surface is giving your child a truly unique learning experience! goodstart.org.au

We decided to match artists with their artworks, but you could design your own theme. You could try matching scientists to their inventions or books to their main characters! 7. Now for the fun bit: making the stars of your wall hanging! Each felt artist we made started with 2 eyes, 1 nose, 1 mouth and 2 cheeks glued down onto a head shape. You can use this formula to make any character you like! 8. Using your imagination and various colours of felt, cut and glue di erent accessories to your characters. 9. Keep going until you have enough to fill your wall hanging. We made 5 artists and 5 artworks. We made use of our le over scraps to make the Artists’ famous works. 10. You’re ready to play! Do not glue down your matches so that you can mix them up and test your kids! The Artists we made were – Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Yayoi Kusama, and Rene Magritte.
