Understanding Milestones Ages 0-5

As our little ones develop, they have rapid periods of growth at different ages where key skills are established. Your child’s early childhood years are critical to their growth and development and set them up with good foundation skills to support them in their friendships, learning, communication, problem solving, physical abilities and emotional wellbeing. One key area of development is communication. Here are a few critical skills that you will see: Birth-12 months:– Understands around 10 words, responds to their name, recognises familiar people and objects– Start babbling around 6 months, and learn a few words, copy sounds and noises (e.g. animal sounds)– Enjoys early turn taking games (peek-a-boo), smiles and squeals in response to others 1-2 years:– Will follow simple commands (e.g. put it in the bin), understands up to 50 words, and shows interest in playing and interacting with others– Closer to 2 years, children will point to many body parts and pictured items that are named, follow instructions with 2 parts, and use toys for their purpose (e.g. brush doll’s hair)– Will say at least 50 words as they approach 2yrs and begin 2-word combinations 2-3 years:– Children understand more questions by now (“what” “where” “who”)– Developing knowledge of basic adjectives such as colour and size, and can identify objects that go together.– Noticing feelings in others and themselves– Sentences are up to 5 words long, and a variety of words are used (action, naming, location, describing words)You should be hearing established sounds such as m, n, b, p, h, k, g, w, t, d, and newer ones such as s, f, ng in their words 3-4 years:– Understands most ‘wh’ questions (what, who, where, when), can answer most questions about their day, and will share, take turns and play cooperatively– Uses joining words, asks lots of questions, uses pronouns (e.g. he/she, me/you) and negatives (e.g.‘don’t/can’t)– Some sounds are a little difficult still including s, sh, ch, j, th, z, l, r 4-5 years:– Can follow 3 part instructions (e.g. get your hat, take an apple, wait at the door), and can understand them while doing another task– Starts to recognise some letters, sounds, numbers– Sentences are formed well, stories are simple but have a beginning, middle and end, and most speech sounds are accurate– Plays cooperatively with their peers, and uses imaginary play Red Flags:– Early signs that may indicate that it’s worth looking into support and guidance from a friendly speech pathologist include:*Children are not achieving their milestones*None or limited facial expression, interaction, sharing enjoyment, eye contact from 9 months onwards*Prefers to line toys up or throw/bang toys rather than playing with them how they are intended to be played with (from 2 years)*No clear words by 18months, and not putting words together at 2 years*Speech is difficult to understand at 3 and 4 years*Poor interaction/unwillingness to interact with others*Lack of response to sounds and visual information **There may be times that you are not quite sure how your child is tracking, it is always helpful to seek advice and support if ever you are unsure. TEST DRIVE: 7 seater VW Touareg Family Friendly Luxury

Family Friendly Luxury My intergalactic spaceship (AKA car!!!) for the day! This luxury SUV is so high tech and fast flying that you really do feel like you’re at the helm of an out-of-this-world, time travelling space machine! Yet, its features are so easy to use that even the most technologically inept person (that’s me!!!) can navigate it. The new Volkswagen Touareg Launch Edition had us all comfy and cosy as we flew up the freeway (ok, ok, not actually flying – I stuck to the speed limit of course!!! But it definitely felt like we were flying!) to the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens to make the most of the beautiful Autumn weather. Those twists and turns, and hilly roads are no match for this beast with its 8 speed automatic gears and 4 motion all wheel drive, and even though it’s a bigger SUV, it handles like a zippy small car. There’s a heap of boot space (my double pram plus a giant picnic basket fits easily with room to spare) and my babes in the back had plenty of room too, without their car seats having to be squeezed in. I LOVED the ginormous electric glass panoramic roof and so did the kids. They were delighted when those pretty Autumn leaves were falling. The Touareg has all the swanky features you’d expect from a luxury SUV, plus so many more like the buttery soft leather seats with heating AND cooling, handy compartments for EVERYTHING, tinted rear windows, navigation system, keyless access and start, auto headlights and rain sensing wipers, plus 4 zone climate control air conditioning. Not to mention all the high tech safety features (which suddenly become SO important when you’re transporting your most precious cargo) like Driver Fatigue Detection System, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, Park Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist, Side Assist, Lane Assist. Seriously, this car is so clever it can almost drive itself! And then there are my two most favourite features… the HUGE display touchscreen that wraps almost around the entire dash – which also changes colour FYI. Yes, you can choose the colour of your dash display! How fun! And, the fully customisable massage function built into the seats! That’s right, a day spa in your car!! Now, I’m not keen on driving at the best of times, but I’d happily hoon around all day, even with three squawkers in the back seat, if I could have a luxury back and leg massage for hours on end! The comfort levels of the Volkswagen Touareg are incomparable, the safety and technology features are mind-blowing, and the overall driving experience is second to none. Every little aspect has been so well thought about and executed in this family friendly, luxury SUV. EXTRA FEATURES INCLUDE: • 8 speed Automatic & 4MOTION All-wheel drive • Front Assist with City EB and Predictive Pedestrian Monitoring* • Lane Assist with Adaptive Lane Guidance* • Park Assist* • Front and Rear Cross Traf c Assist* • Proactive Occupant Protection* • Electronically-operated tailgate with Easy Open & Close • Savona leather appointed upholstery# with massage, heated and ventilated front seats • 9.2” Discover Pro navigation system with gesture control • Rear View Camera* • Keyless Access and start • Front and rear parking sensors • Auto headlights and rain sensing wipers • Driver Fatigue Detection system* • Panoramic electric glass sunroof • Innovision Package: 15” Discover Premium, 12.3” Active Info Display, windshield projected Head-Up Display and additional Ambient Interior Lighting in 30 selectable colours *Safety technologies are not a substitute for a driver’s responsibility for the vehicle. #Leather appointed seats has a combination of genuine and artificial leather, but are not wholly leather. The new Volkswagen Touareg Launch Edition is now available. AFL MAX opens in Adelaide

Need to tire some KIDDOS out? Welcome AFL MAX! AFL MAX is the brainchild of James Podsiadly (former Crows and Geelong Player) who had a vision to take the Australian footy experience to the next level, AFL Max has finally arrived. Together with co-founders Darren Thomas and Eddie Taylor, Pods’ vision was to build a safe and interactive venue where all people feel welcome. And there was no better partner than one of the most inclusive sports in the world, the AFL, to help that vision become a reality. Today, almost three years in the making, and backed by some of the biggest names in the sport, AFL Max is an indoor 5500m² family entertainment and training facility. The Centre merges state of the art technology and traditional skills development with fun for all ages. At AFL Max players and fans of AFL get to test themselves against bespoke kicking, passing, fitness and tackling activations to enhance their skills. Alongside AFL challenges, the centre includes a virtual reality zone, climbing walls and soft play areas. There is nothing else like it anywhere in Australia! Further, it has been designed for whole of the community use where the common bond is a love of Australian rules football. Whether you want to come in with the whole family and watch a game live while the kids play or you want to improve your football skills, AFL Max caters for all. With a bar, café and stadium style seating surrounding the main playing arena, its fun and exciting and a great way to spend time with your friends and family. We are hoping they are open for the school holidays and they do kids parties! Max Aerial Fly high on our AFL themed trampoline section playing various games and testing your spatial awareness, improve your balance and posture and getting fit while having fun. Bouncing or rebounding is great fun, and it’s also great exercise. In fact, ten minutes of jumping has been found to be about the same amount of exercise as thirty minutes of running making it one of the most efficient ways of increasing fitness. Because Max Aerial trampolines absorb impact it reduces the risk of injuring muscle and fibers. It also helps greater results to be achieved by combining rebounding with other types of exercise such as strength training and weight lighting. Max Climb Choose one of the 14 climbing walls within AFL Max and have some fun racing your team mates whilst working on your core strength. Climbing requires much more than upper-body strength. The success of completing a route relies heavily on a long list of physical factors, including intricate footwork, lower body strength and lean muscle mass. Although not often thought of as a common form of cardio, ascending walls is a sure way to get your heart pumping, similar to the way climbing stairs or jogging does. Climbing a wall also teaches children great hand, feet and eye coordination. Enhanced coordination skills developed through climbing can also be transferred to many other aspects of life, including other sports. It’s also a great way to reinforce the understanding of left and right. Max Rookie Max Rookie comprises of an awesome climbing tower and soft play area, which helps younger kids develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. And above all… it’s really fun! Max Interactive Think of Max Interactive as a giant AFL Gym where traditional physical education boundaries can be pushed forward, and take learning to a new level. Max Interactive has been designed to bring active play and active learning together using the latest technologies that combines lights, sounds, video and gameplay to engage your body, mind and senses in immersive experiences that allow you to develop your physical skills through play. Max Interactive will challenge your decision making skills in a fully interactive environment never before seen in SA. Max Bump Challenge your team mates as you work through the inflatable bump course designed by Rory Sloane. This zone also includes the bungee run and the giant slide. Apart from being amazingly fun, Max Bump is designed to teach kids proper blocking and tackling techniques in a better and safer way. Intense bounce back action translates neurologically; kids see their impact while avoiding direct physical contact with teammates. Kids master skills with reduced risk of injury when they’re actually playing AFL. Hours of operation Monday 9am – 6pm Tuesday 9am – 6pm Wednesday 9am – 6pm Thursday 9am – 6pm Friday 9am – 7pm Saturday 9am – 7pm Sunday 10am – 6pm * Hours are subject to change depending on the time of the year and for High Performance/Clubs bookings and AFL Live games. Embrace yourselves: Taryn Brumfitt is paving the road to body positivity

Embrace yourselves: Taryn Brumfitt is paving the road to body positivity When Adelaide mother of three, Taryn Brumfitt, posted what was a somewhat unconventional before and after photo of herself on her Facebook page, she could never have predicted it was going to reverberate across social media the world over. In the composite, Taryn showcased what she believed, at one time, had the potential to be her perfect bikini body. On stage in her pinnacle moment of glory, after intensive dieting, training and restriction, confidently competing in a body building competition she was inspired to enter as motivation to help lose the post baby kilos. This image was juxtaposed with her more voluptuous, ‘after’ shot; a happier, fuller and most importantly, more fulfilled version of herself, that she had chosen to embrace, after throwing away the scales in favour of learning to love and accept her body. Since then, Taryn has continued the body positive conversation she started that night when her image went viral globally, by undertaking an international crusade; rallying against the media, advertising, the weight loss industry and overarching societal ideologies of what a woman’s body “should” look like. What started as an individual wanting to spark a change in thinking, has gone on to become a global Body Image Movement. Having authored two books and directed and starred in the inspiring and important social change documentary Embrace, Taryn is at the forefront of empowering women and men to make peace with their bodies, and is now setting her sights on helping the most impressionable in our lives, our children, to interrupt the cycle of body hating before it begins. We chat with Taryn about her body confidence journey, learning to embrace yourself, and what’s next for The Body Image Movement. When did your journey towards body positivity begin? The moment I stepped onto the body building stage, arriving in what was my desired bikini body, I just remember thinking “I can’t do this for the rest of my life”. At the pinnacle of embracing what I thought was my perfect body, I just thought “oh gosh no, this is just too hard and takes too much time and sacrifice and energy”. I decided I was going to go out and use my body for pleasure and not punish it, and learn to find joy in food again, rather than just worrying about how many calories something has. How did you learn to embrace your own body? It’s really important to know that it won’t happen overnight, you can’t just flick a switch and love your body. But you can, in any given moment, make the choice to learn to embrace. I think the key word here is learn. You really have to educate yourself and spend time unpacking the old stories, educating yourself as to why you hate your body and then seek out information, whether in the form of documentaries, books, websites or people who are positive about their body image, and just head up that road of learning to embrace. What inspired you to turn this exploration of body image into a documentary? There are two reasons. The first being the 7000+ emails I received after posting my before and after body transformation image on Facebook. Emails from people all around the world talking about their body satisfaction, very heartbreaking stories. That was certainly the motivation, I knew I had uncovered something we weren’t talking about in 2014, like we are now in 2019. I felt a responsibility to do something with all of those stories. The second reason was through frustration with media interviews. They’re 4-minute-long TV segments, and because my photograph went so viral, they were really about being a viral sensation as opposed to respecting the subject and depth that sat behind that photograph. I just wanted the subject of body image to be taken more seriously than it was, and the only way to do that was to do it on my own terms and be independent. That’s when I came up with the idea to make the film. How has the body image movement journey transformed your life personally? The whole journey from the original photograph, to the books, to the film, has transformed my life in so many ways. I still live in and love Adelaide, so that hasn’t changed. I travel a lot, to various parts of the world to spread this message. The whole journey of learning to love my body has propelled me outside my comfort zone to do things that I never thought possible. I think that truly is the difference between not loving your body and loving your body. There’s such power in finding that confidence, self-love and self-respect. That’s what I want for every woman and mother, to find that magic inside of themselves, because we are capable of so much more than we know, and we are living in a day and age where it’s time that women rise up, stand up and use their voices. It’s really hard to do that when we’re still standing around the water cooler at work talking about our cellulite or the latest diet plans. What have you come across that has surprised you about body image / confidence issues universally? I think I was surprised that no matter where I travelled, across different walks of people and cultures, women felt the same. Women across the planet are struggling with their bodies. It might be different nuances in different countries, but there are always challenges. No matter where I went, the stories were still the same, women were hating their bodies. What do you hope people following the body image movement journey will take away from it? It’s not the sole purpose of their life to be at war with their body, that’s not what we’re here to do. A few months ago, I was walking through Perth Children’s Hospital and I saw all these sick children and I was looking at them thinking

Do your KIDDO’S have 20/20 visions?

I Spy with My Little Eye; is a game that has been used by parents for generations and while it can help wile away the hours on a long car trip or entertain a testy toddler in a doctor’s surgery, it is also a great reminder to us as parents to think about our children’s ability to see clearly. It’s a startling fact is that 1 in 5 children have undetected eye problems and these can be nearly impossible to spot without an eye test.  Children are remarkably resilient and without the knowledge that they should be able to see any other way, they will cope in many other ways. Maybe they hold their book a little closer (or farther away) from their face thannormal, maybe they tilt their head when looking at the television or squint.  Theycould cover one eye when watching a movie on an ipad, or complain of headaches ordry eyes.  The fact is that there are so many subtle signs, that they are easy to miss. But the way not to miss them, is to get their eyes tested by a professionaloptometrist who can asses not only their vision but their overall eye health. At National Pharmacies Optical, they believe that all children should have the brightest outlook on life so they have now introduced FREE glasses for children 12 years and over with a family membership.  That means you can book an appointment at any of their 21 optical stores and your child can have an extensive eye exam and if they do detect a problem that can be corrected with glasses – thoseglasses and the lenses are completely free. So next time you’re asked to play eye spy as you’re driving down the road, consider how your child may be spying; the world and consider putting your mind at rest with a simple, no cost eye exam at National Pharmacies Optical. A Family Membership with National Pharmacies is a great way for all the family to receive more benefits, more often. In addition to free glasses for children under 12, there are also great benefits on skincare, fragrance and health items. Outside of the store, the MemberPlus program gives you access to activities and offers from great South Australian companies. There are 21 Optical Stores Across SA, Book An Eye Test Today! Wild Imagination: More Green Time Less Screen Time

If you’ve ever been to a Wild Imagination event you’ll know that you will find all kids of nature play activities specifically designed to let any kiddo’s mind run wild and free. Wild Imagination is a wonderful alternative to vacation care in the school holidays where little ones laugh, splash, crawl and climb through mud play, nature crafts, potion making and cubby building. All of the activities utilise ingredients from the natural world around us such as flowers, sticks, herbs, spices, leaves, wood and anything Brooke Davis can come up with. Brooke is the imagination behind it all who believes that kids need more green time and less screen time. To help this idea come alive she has recently launched a crowd funding campaign for her nature play activity book for kids ‘Your Wild Imagination’. From 3+ years old the book is for anyone big or small who wishes to be inspired. It includes over 20 nature play activities that can be transformed by your own unique creativity. We spoke to Brooke Davis about her new book and what inspires her: What inspires you? I am constantly in awe of the inquisitive disposition of children and their innate connection to nature. My two cheeky and adventurous children show me every day how to be playful (although some days I wish they would play more like superb fairy wrens and less like baboons!) I am fortunate enough to live in the Adelaide Hills with a beautiful garden, which is where the images for the book were photographed. The ever-changing trees and diverse bird life provide me with so much joy and it urges me to encourage others to spend time in nature. Have you always wanted to do a printed book? Writing a book was actually something that came to me in a dream early last year – yes, I know that sounds a bit woo woo! The dream was so vivid that when I woke up I decided that ‘sometime’ in my future I would write a book. Initially I thought it would be a decade in the making, but in November last year I went on a magnificent trek in Nepal and while technology-free (as well as husband- and kid-free!) for 12 days I found myself drawn to writing and planning the book. I hope this adventure leads to many more books because I have planned them all in that travel journal! What was your first nature play memory? I spent my early childhood living in Darwin and I remember being outside pretty much all the time. My sister and I would bring our dolls outside and make cubbies for them, and play imaginative games while climbing trees. I remember listening to the deafening sound of the cicadas and collecting their skins – it was like a mini treasure hunt finding them all over the backyard. I would follow the green ant trails to their intricately weaved nest and eat their tasty bottoms whilst trying not to get bitten. What has been the most exciting thing about the crowd funding journey?  Planning and photographing the book was a lot of fun! But it has been seeing the reaction of those who have only just discovered Wild Imagination become so passionate about the book. I have loved seeing people from all over the world pledge to buy the book; it gives me hope that the next generation of leaders will have a strong connection to nature and will work to protect the environment. Playing in and with nature is the first step to developing an environmental conscience, because we won’t care for something if we don’t connect with it. What’s next for Wild Imagination? Short term, we’ve got some events with partners lined up for the coming months and the October school holiday program is in the planning stages. We’ll launch the book in October and will be working hard to get it into book shops and gift shops. Longer term, I plan to create more nature play books with different activities for various age groups and interests – including for tweens/teens and adults. The many benefits of nature play are well documented. And the importance of nature connection cannot be understated. The question I always come back to which drives me forward is: How are our children going to care about the environment if they spend a decreasing amount of time connecting to nature? We need all the nature warriors and change makers we can get to protect this one beautiful planet we share, and I’m grateful that the way I have chosen to spread the joy of nature is embraced by so many people. Mini Mad Things: This Online Children’s Costume Shop Might Save You Next Book Week

Lions and Witches For Their Wardrobe Ever dreamed of being a pirate, armed with a mighty sword, ready to conquer the seven seas? Or maybe a robot all the way from outer space! All of this is possible with the imagination of a child. ‘Mini Mad Things’ is an SA business that makes ethical, fascinating costumes and enchanting accessories to aid kiddos in their imaginative play. Eleanor, the brains behind Mini Mad Things, says that the story began with a dinosaur costume made for a playful two year old. The collection of crazy costumes then grew from there to join the whimsical realms of children all over the world (they ship internationally). Importantly, young children learn by imagining and doing. The process of pretending helps to grow skills in many essential developmental areas. Healthy relationship building stems from social interaction at a young age. Cooperative play helps foster empathy and understanding of others feelings. There are no gender rules when it comes to dress-ups. Dinosaurs and fairies are for everyone; giving children the opportunity to choose their own role-play is character building. Not only does Mini Mad Things have a smorgasbord of options from superheroes, unicorns, hats, hair-clips, wands, jewellery and everything in-between, they also have a range of craft activities, which use ethical and recyclable ingredients. Make your own junk robot, bark painting, nature crown and more! We love that Mini Mad Things gives children the opportunity to be creative and to see the magic in the world, the way young minds should. minimadthings.com @minimadthings

Fundsy: The Conscious Money Box Every Child Needs

Money Talks Joanna and Hayden are putting in their two cents when it comes to kiddos saving their pennies, because money doesn’t grow on trees, but it can in a Fundsy Conscious Money Box. Fundsy is the ‘passion project’ of the pair who live on the Fleurieu Peninsula with their 3 children Harriet (Hattie), Edward (Ed) and Walter (Wally). Whilst watching their kiddos grow up in the outdoors Joanna and Hayden decided they were eager to build a community where kids could share their ideas, achievements, stories and conversations; especially through social media. Fundsy Conscious Money Boxes divides savings into ‘spend, save, give and grow’ provoking thoughts beyond ‘right now’ and ‘instant gratification’. We spoke to Joanna and Hayden about Fundsy: Is Fundsy about simply teaching wealth to kids or is it deeper than that? It’s so much deeper than financial wealth, it encourages kids to consciously make decisions about how they spend their money. We want it to empower young people to be creative, feel confident, generous and capable with their money so they have the power to make a positive impact in their own life, at home, in the community and beyond! What was the inspiration behind Fundsy? As our eldest child came to the age where she began to understand a little bit about money, we decided we wanted finance to be a positive experience where she could learn about giving, saving and growing money. We knew the school curriculum would be limited and decided to take things into our own hands. And now we want to spread the message! Did your own upbringing have any effect on your effort to make conscious, positive financial decisions?  Yes! We had little education around money and finances growing up so I guess we want our kids to think broader, be excited and think positively about money. What was the best thing you ever saved up for as a kid? Showbags from the Royal Adelaide Show! What do you see in the future for Fundsy? We see a huge community of people who have changed their thoughts around money, sharing stories and ideas and making a positive impact in their homes, communities and the world. fundsymoneybox.com  Share your Fundsy journey on Instagram: @fundsy_conscious_money
