SALA Festival 2026 invites families and young creatives to explore art across South Australia, with opportunities to exhibit, discover and get inspired this August.

South Australia’s biggest celebration of visual art is back, with registrations now open for the 2026 South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) Festival. Running throughout August, this vibrant, state-wide event is a fantastic opportunity for creative kids, teens and families to experience, explore and even take part in the arts.

Known as the largest open-access visual arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere, SALA welcomes artists of all ages, abilities and experience levels. That means whether your child loves painting, photography, sculpture or digital art, there’s a place for them to shine.

Across the month of August, South Australia transforms into a giant gallery, with artworks popping up everywhere from traditional exhibition spaces to cafés, shopfronts, community venues and even living rooms. It’s a wonderful way to discover art in unexpected places and introduce children to creativity beyond the classroom.

A chance to create, exhibit and explore

One of the most exciting aspects of SALA is its open-access nature. Families, schools and young artists can register exhibitions, open studios or creative events, making it a truly inclusive celebration of local talent.

You don’t need a finished masterpiece to sign up. As long as you have your event details confirmed and an image of your work, you’re ready to go. Early registrations also come with a discounted fee, making it even easier to get involved.

For families, SALA offers a unique way to:

  • Encourage kids to explore their creativity
  • Visit local exhibitions together
  • Discover emerging South Australian artists
  • Turn everyday spaces into creative hubs

Whether you’re raising a budding artist or simply looking for inspiring outings, SALA is packed with opportunities to engage young minds.

Big opportunities for young and emerging artists

Alongside the festival, a range of awards and opportunities are available for participating artists, including categories for emerging creatives and those exploring science, community themes and more.

While many awards are aimed at professional artists, they highlight the exciting pathways available for young people interested in pursuing art more seriously. It’s a great way to show kids how creativity can grow into something bigger.

How to get involved

Registrations are open now, with early bird discounts available for those who sign up before early April. Final registrations close in early May, giving families plenty of time to plan their creative contribution.

Even if you’re not exhibiting, simply exploring the festival is a brilliant way to spend time together as a family, discovering art across South Australia.
