Whether you were a Super Mario kid, a Zelda devotee, or recently enchanted by Hollow Knight, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is inviting you to something epic this August. Press Play hits the Festival Theatre for two nights only, celebrating the most iconic soundtracks in gaming history.

Conducted by Jessica Gethin and hosted by Game Show presenter Meena Shamaly (of ABC Classic fame), Press Play is no ordinary orchestral gig. It’s a nostalgic, immersive, and joyful tribute to the music that defined decades of gameplay, from the 8-bit charm of Tetris and Sonic to the cinematic worlds of Assassin’s Creed, Halo and Kingdom Hearts.

Following a sold-out show with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2024, where cosplay was not just welcomed, but encouraged, Press Play makes its highly anticipated Adelaide debut. And it’s not just for gamers.

“Video game music is now more creative than ever because it can be nearly any sound you imagine.” says Meena.

“Gaming scores are contemporary classical adventures that powerfully blend tradition with the future. They are immersive, dynamic, and non-linear experiences, actively responding to the player and bringing entire worlds to life. With exciting, evocative, and unforgettable themes, these sounds remain in the heart long after the screen is off.”

ASO’s Principal Bass Trombone and avid gamer Amanda Tillett, sees this as a meaningful bridge between worlds.

“I love the thought that a diehard gamer could be coming to a concert like this seeing an orchestra for the first time but recognising everything they hear.” she says.

“If the music is good, it doesn’t matter what it was originally written for – people will enjoy it. Including gaming alongside traditional classical and film music in orchestral seasons is exciting. It makes space for more people and ultimately more connection.”

With nostalgia, drama, and goosebump-inducing scores, Press Play is for anyone who’s ever picked up a controller—or just loves a powerful soundtrack. Whether you come dressed as Link or just want to hear some phenomenal music, this is your chance to hear the greatest boss battles live on stage.

Game on, Adelaide. Book now so you don’t miss out! Tickets are available now at aso.com.au/press-play. Press Play is on at Festival Theatre on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 August.

Loud sounds, strict rules about staying seated and quiet, or even just the fear of being judged can turn a fun outing into an ordeal. That’s exactly why the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra created its Relaxed concerts, an initiative designed to make live orchestral music accessible to more people.
