WORDS: Lauren Rofe
There’s something special about taking your kids to their first live show. It’s priceless watching their face as they first walk in, their eyes widening at all the new sights and feeling their chubby little fingers grip yours tighter with anticipation. I was privileged to take my 2-year-old to Play School Live in Concert for his first live show this past weekend and it didn’t disappoint.
The excitement in the Norwood Concert Hall was palpable as families gathered, admiring the vibrant and playful stage. From the moment the friendly presenters, Alex, Luke, and the talented pianist Bill, appeared and introduced themselves with the familiar song “What Do You Think My Name Is?”, the young audience was captivated. For the next 40 minutes we were treated to a bevy of famous tunes such as Let’s Play Together, I’m a Little Teapot, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Humpty Dumpty, and other classics, with both kids and caregivers joyfully singing along. The presenters with their warm and playful energy got everyone up on their feet, singing, dancing, and laughing, with particularly raucous laughter after the song “Do You Put Your Hat On…”, when the hat was put in places it didn’t belong (yes, the hat went onto someone’s bottom).
The interactive set helped the presenters discover and introduce each of the iconic playschool toys: Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima, Humpty, Joey and Kia. Whenever a colourful box was opened to reveal another toy, the young audience was mesmerised. Eventually the discoveries landed on the Rocket clock, signalling the start of Story Time. An imaginative story took the audience on a treasure hunt through the bush, across the sea, up in the sky and into outer space. Luke brought the story to life, dressing up as various characters and giving us adults a good chuckle at the cowboy named ‘Raygun, King of the Horsies’ (insert the now iconic Raygun kangaroo pose here).
After being successful in their treasure hunt, the story ended, and the show began winding down with a fun rendition of the Play School theme “There’s a Bear in There”. The presenters waved a heartfelt goodbye ensuring every child felt special as the magical experience came to an end. If you have a child who adores Play School, heck- if you’re a nostalgic adult remembering the tunes from your childhood, this show is for you!
