OzAsia Festival 2024 Review: The Story of Chi

FAMILY-FRIENDLY THEATRE REVIEW: KIDDO Reviewer, Suze, took her kiddo to see The Story of Chi at the Space Theatre for OzAsia Festival 2024.

WORDS: Suze Harrington

OzAsia Festival has been such a vibrant hub of activity this past week and our family has enjoyed being amongst it – sampling delicious and fragrant foods, checking out the Moon Lantern Trail and last night, attending the premiere of The Story of Chi at the Space Theatre. This new collaboration between Terrapin Puppet Theatre and CAAPerformance was a heart-warming story packed with humour, exquisite puppetry and reflections on the things that unite and divide us.

At its centre is twelve-year-old Chi, who finds herself caught in the delicate tension between her family’s traditions and the demands of cross-cultural life. A particularly poignant aspect of the narrative is Chi’s relationship with her mother as they navigate a shared grief. The loss they experience adds depth to the story, illustrating how sorrow can complicate the struggle to maintain traditions while also embracing change. Their journey through grief becomes a touching backdrop for the adventure, highlighting the importance of support and understanding within families during turbulent times.

The introduction of Mizu, a young dragon navigating his own separation from family, adds a magical layer to the performance. Their journey of friendship and discovery is not only humorous and adventurous but also touching, reminding us of the importance of connection and understanding across generations.

What truly sets this production apart is its innovative use of body and shadow puppetry. The visual storytelling is mesmerizing, with the beautifully crafted puppets coming to life in a way that enhances the emotional depth of the story. The seamless blend of light, shadow, and movement creates an immersive experience that draws the audience in from the very first scene.

The performances are heartfelt and engaging, with each actor bringing a unique energy and warmth to their roles. Some of Chi’s struggles resonated with my own twelve-year-old, while Mizu’s whimsical presence adds a delightful charm that keeps the atmosphere light and fun.

Overall, The Story of Chi is a captivating tale that beautifully explores the bonds that connect us, even amidst grief and loss. It’s perfect for families looking for a thoughtful, magical experience that sparks conversations about tradition, change, and the importance of family.
