Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Fancy Long Legs at the Dunstan Playhouse, part of this year’s DreamBIG Children’s Festival.
Accompanied by my two daughters, aged seven and five, we were eager to see how this glittery musical would capture our imaginations, and it did not disappoint!
Based on Rachel Burke’s picture book, Fancy Long Legs tells the story of Fancy, a spider who loves to create but struggles to stay focused on her web-building task. With the support of her spiderling friends, Fancy goes on a journey to find her own style and make something uniquely hers. The production is a vibrant celebration of creativity, neurodivergence, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
The cast delivered an outstanding performance, seamlessly blending acting, singing, and dancing. A special mention goes to Incy the spider, whose knockout voice added an extra layer of charm to the production. The set design was equally impressive, with Rachel Burke herself serving as the costume and set designer. Her artistic vision brought the world of Fancy to life in a way that was both enchanting and relatable.
The 50-minute runtime was perfect for young children, keeping them engaged without losing their attention. The relaxed attitude towards audience noise and movement made it an inclusive experience for all attendees.
Overall, Fancy Long Legs was a delightful and meaningful experience that my daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed. If you get the opportunity again, it’s a must-see for families looking for a show that combines creativity, inclusivity, and heart.
