Meet this month’s doer: Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders (he/him), 15, hopes to create positive change for South Australians with disabilities. Using a letterboard, here's the story he recently shared with Get Around It.

“I am a 15-year-old nonspeaking Autistic who also has a Developmental Coordination Disorder, Childhood Apraxia of Speech and ADHD – and who spells to communicate on a letterboard. I am the youngest person to be selected on the South Australian Disability Ministerial Council (DMAC), and I am also the first nonspeaker to be selected.

“I was drawn to apply for the DMAC because of my lived experience, and I felt I could make a difference in people’s lives. I am someone who can represent Autistic nonspeakers and influence policy and strategy.

“I have overcome many obstacles in my life, and I want to help other Autistic nonspeakers, minimally speaking and unreliable speakers to access and receive high-quality therapy and services, and to have autonomy and agency in their lives. I am only just beginning, so look out for a shift and change for nonspeakers in SA.

“As someone who does not talk to communicate, I am proud of myself for never giving up and always trying – even when my brain and body can’t communicate with each other.”

Patrick highlights some of his other recent achievements as including:

  • Awarded a $10,000 Education Scholarship for his presentation at Parliament House about creating an Autism and Neurodiversity Academy of Excellence
  • Member of the Teen Parliament Minister of Education Committee
  • Finalist for the Channel 7 Young Achiever Awards – Create Change Award category
  • Presented to the SA Department of Education Autism Inclusion Teachers
  • Appeared on the ABC’s BTN TV program about his life and nonspeaking autism
