From 6 to 12 October, Young Carers Week is back – and this year’s calendar is packed with free activities that are all about fun, connection, and celebrating young people who take on big responsibilities at home.
Whether it’s caring for a parent, sibling or grandparent with disability, illness, or mental health challenges, there are around 30,000 young carers across South Australia – and this special week is all about recognising their incredible efforts.
“Young Carers Week is one of the ways we can ensure young carers are seen, heard and supported on their caregiving journey,” says Young Carers SA General Manager Brigid Koenig.
“Young carers are incredibly self-less, courageous and committed and our weeklong celebration recognises those invaluable traits. Through our events, we’re providing young carers with respite from their significant caregiving responsibilities and an opportunity to do something free and fun for themselves.”
Young Carers SA is the state’s only organisation dedicated to supporting young carers – and while National Carers Week happens a little later in the month, this South Aussie-led celebration puts young carers front and centre.
This year, for the first time ever, Young Carers SA is also hosting a special ticketed corporate event at Adelaide Oval.
“Our luncheon will bring together the state’s business community, alongside advocates and community partners, to establish new allies and create opportunities to work together to better support young carers,” Brigid says.
