The most effective way to protect your child from the flu

Influenza, or the flu, is a virus that can cause fever, sore throat, coughing, headaches, body aches – and in children, sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea.

The flu spreads easily and quickly through coughs, sneezes and contact with shared surfaces or hands. Babies and young children are more likely to get sick from the flu, and may even need to be admitted to hospital.

Their health is in your hands – and the most effective way to protect your child from the flu is a vaccination every year.

Medicare eligible children aged six months to less than five years can get their free flu vaccine from your GP, local council, community health centre or Aboriginal health service. It’s a safe, simple step that offers strong protection.

Some providers may charge a consultation fee. Check when booking your appointment.
