St Raphael’s School’s focus on literacy

St Raphael's School demonstrates an exceptional commitment to literacy, recognising its fundamental role in a child's education and future success.

St Raphael’s School’s approach to literacy is comprehensive, innovative, and deeply rooted in scientific research. At the core of their literacy program is the belief that fostering a love of reading will deliver on their promise of a bright and inspired start, for all their students.

Principal Emma Fowler emphasises the importance of instilling this passion early on, viewing it as one of the greatest gifts parents can offer their children. In an era dominated by screens, the school provides a compelling alternative, asserting that immersing oneself in a book is key to success in an overstimulated world.

The school’s commitment to literacy is evident in its purposeful design. The new school development includes purpose-built reading areas, featuring a special reading tree where teachers conduct classes, ESOs provide individual literacy support, and students can immerse themselves in the joy of reading. This thoughtful integration of reading spaces into the school environment underscores the importance placed on literacy.

St Raphael’s employs a multi-faceted approach to literacy instruction. For students from Reception to Year 3, the school utilises a multi-sensory approach based on The Science of Reading, which draws on evidence from education, linguistics, psychology, special education, and neuroscience. This evidence-based method ensures students receive targeted support in crucial areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

The school’s literacy program extends beyond basic instruction. Students engage with a variety of texts, including quality picture books, short reads, class novels, and books of their own choice, to develop a genuine love for reading. Teachers use diagnostic tools to identify each student’s appropriate “stretch zone” and guide them in selecting books that challenge and engage them at the right level.

St Raphael’s School also organises innovative events to promote literacy. The upcoming Reading Revolution Read-a-thon and Expert Panel Session is a prime example. This event brings together literacy experts to discuss the importance of reading and provide practical tips for parents to support their children’s literacy development at home.

Such initiatives demonstrate the school’s commitment to involving parents in the literacy journey and extending the love of reading beyond the classroom.

St Raphael’s School’s focus on literacy is comprehensive, innovative, and deeply ingrained in its educational philosophy. From purpose-built reading spaces to evidence-based instruction methods and community engagement, the school is dedicated to nurturing lifelong readers and empowering students with the literacy skills they need for academic and personal success.
