Did you have breakfast this morning?

Put yourself in the shoes of thousands of South Australian school children who go without having breakfast.

KickStart for Kids’ annual ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’ event, which returns on Friday, 13 December, will do just that. This fundraising event offers guests the chance to experience what it’s like for kids who often start their day hungry.

The breakfast program provides about 60,000 breakfasts every week at more than 360 schools across South Australia, including in the north, west, south, and several regional areas.

Ian Steel, founder of KickStart for Kids, explains the importance of the ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’ event and its role in supporting the charity’s other programs throughout the year.

“No Breakfast, Breakfast is one of our key annual fundraising events, helping us to raise awareness of the reality faced by many children in South Australia,” says Ian. “We encourage the Adelaide community, especially those who work in the CBD, to join us in supporting this valuable cause.”

After the event, which will be hosted by SAFM announcer and KickStart ambassador, Rebecca Morse, guests can choose whether to have breakfast or continue their day without it, in order to understand the effects of going without.

“Most people don’t realise how fortunate they are to simply open the fridge or pantry and choose breakfast without a second thought,” Ian adds.

“No Breakfast, Breakfast helps put this into perspective and gives our guests the chance to recognise their privilege, leaving them with a renewed sense of gratitude to share with others.”

KickStart for Kids’ ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’ is hosted at Hilton Adelaide (233 Victoria Square, Adelaide) on Friday, 13 December at 7:30am. Tickets are available online, priced at $70 for one adult or $650 for a table of 10. All proceeds will go towards providing breakfast items for the KickStart for Kids Breakfast Program.

How outdoor experiences fuel child development

There’s a kind of learning that can’t be replicated inside four walls. You see it when a child pauses to pocket a rock, float leaves in a puddle, or follow the path of a butterfly. These moments aren’t diversions from learning. They’re learning at its most authentic. For children in their foundational years—from infancy to primary—outdoor learning and play isn’t just valuable; it’s essential.
