Are you ‘bad’ at maths? Think again! Welcome to The Maths Movement – Real World Maths Unleashed

This innovative event aims to overturn the widespread belief that people are simply “good” or “bad” at maths, and instead, reveal the capable mathematician in everyone.

“We’re pulling back the curtain on one of education’s biggest myths,” says Principal Emma Fowler. “The notion that math ability is something you’re born with is not just incorrect—it’s damaging. We are here to prove that everyone has the potential to excel in mathematics, whether they realize it or not.”

The week-long event will showcase the presence of mathematics in everyday life—from analysing the algorithms behind video games to uncovering the mathematical patterns in reading, music, sports, and daily routines. The goal is to make maths engaging, relevant, and accessible to all, and to empower both children and adults with practical numeracy skills for life.

It’s about time we addressed maths anxiety properly. Many children believe they’re ‘bad at maths,’ and it’s undermining their confidence and limiting their future potential.

A highlight of the week will be the Parent Truth Bomb Panel – Raising Everyday Mathletes with Real World Maths – on Wednesday, September 17 at 6pm, where leading experts—including representatives from the Primary Mathematics Association of SA, maths specialists, and the President of the Mathematical Association of SA—will demonstrate how adults use complex math in their daily lives, often without realising it.

We’re going to show parents that they really are capable maths people, it’s going to be eye-opening.

Key discussion points include:

  • Numeracy and literacy in everyday life
  • Debunking the “good at math” vs. “bad at math” myth
  • Importance of positive math talk with children
  • Empowering existing math skills
  • Real-life math applications vs. rote learning

The event is free and open to all families and community members, regardless of whether they have children enrolled at St Raphael’s School. Everyone is invited to participate and discover the mathematician within themselves.
