The winter school holidays and Illuminate Adelaide arrive at exactly the same time this year, and the timing could not be better. Now in its sixth year, Illuminate Adelaide runs from 1 to 19 July 2026, and the program is full of light, wonder and full-body fun that works for kids of every age. If you’re after family-friendly things to do in Adelaide this July, these are the events worth booking before they sell out.
Here are our picks for families.

Augmented Games
Adelaide Showground
Making its Australian debut exclusively in Adelaide, Augmented Games by Moment Factory is the one to beat for restless kids who need to move. There are no screens and no headsets – just eight immersive, motion-tracked games that test agility, memory and reflexes, played with your whole body.
Team up or face off across the games, then regroup at the spectator-friendly sideline zone where there’s food and drinks and somewhere to sit. It’s built for everyone, including families, seniors and people with disabilities, so multi-generational groups are sorted.
Running 26 June to 19 July, with tickets from $20.

Universal Kingdom: Ice Age
Adelaide Zoo
If your kids are in their dinosaur era, this one is a winner. Universal Kingdom: Ice Age transforms Adelaide Zoo after dark into a glowing prehistoric world, where woolly mammoths, dinosaurs, sabre-toothed tigers and soaring thunderbirds come to life through giant puppetry and light installations.
There’s also an interactive kids’ zone where little ones can dig into ancient secrets and burn off some energy. It runs 2 to 19 July, with tickets from $32. A walk through the zoo at night is a novelty in itself, so factor in extra time to take it all in.

Night Visions
Adelaide Botanic Garden
For families who’d rather wander than race around, Night Visions turns the Adelaide Botanic Garden into an after-dark trail of lasers, projections and immersive sound. It’s self-guided, which means you set the pace – ideal if you’ve got a stroller in tow or kids who like to stop and stare.
It’s a gentle and seriously magical option for a winter evening, and the kind of thing the whole family can do together without anyone losing interest.
Running 1 to 19 July, with tickets from $30.

Illuminate Paws Walk
Rymill Park
New for 2026, and one for the dog-loving families. The Illuminate Paws Walk invites pooches and their humans on an after-dark adventure along the free City Lights trail, taking in interactive artworks and projections that stretch from North Terrace to Rundle Street and, for the first time, into the East Parklands.
Every dog scores a glowing collar keepsake, and part of every ticket goes to the RSPCA. It’s a one-night-only event on 6 July, numbers are strictly limited, and tickets are $35 – so this is one to book sooner rather than later.

Don’t forget the free City Lights trail
Not every Illuminate experience needs a ticket. The free City Lights trail runs through the city with interactive artworks and large-scale projections from North Terrace to Rundle Street and into the East Parklands, and it’s a brilliant way to give the kids a taste of the festival without spending a cent. Rug up, grab a hot chocolate and make an evening of it.
With the school holidays and the festival overlapping, July is shaping up to be a big one for Adelaide families. Book the ticketed events early – the bigger draw cards tend to go fast – and build a free City Lights wander in around them for a full night out under the lights.
