Help save Christmas as UnitingSA faces record demand

Child unwraps gift.
UnitingSA has launched its 2025 Christmas Appeal, calling on families and communities across South Australia to help “save Christmas” for vulnerable children and parents doing it tough.

The organisation’s emergency assistance team is reporting a 30% surge in people seeking support, reflecting the rising pressures on families as the cost of living continues to climb.

This year’s appeal comes at a challenging time for many households, with the number of children living in poverty in South Australia now sitting at almost one in five. The Child Poverty in Australia 2025 Report reveals that SA has the highest rate of child poverty in the nation.

“SA tops the list with 18.3% of children living in poverty,” says UnitingSA CEO, Jenny Hall.

Christmas support needed more than ever

A young girl writes in a book beside a decorated Christmas tree, surrounded by festive lights and ornaments.

The demand for UnitingSA’s Christmas services has grown rapidly.

“We’ve already had 390 children referred to access our toy room to receive Christmas gifts and it is not even December yet.”

Families are struggling with everyday essentials, and the organisation says this year’s pressures are more widespread than ever.

“There is no doubt that cost of living and housing stresses are pushing more and more people into a situation where everyday essential items are becoming unaffordable.”

Many families turning to UnitingSA have never needed help before.

“About one third of those we’re seeing at our emergency relief centre are first-time users of our service.”

The report lists common challenges faced by families, including:

• unexpected expenses like car repairs or medical bills
• payday loans and unaffordable credit card debt
• rental stress (spending over 30% of income on rent)
• eligibility gaps or delays accessing financial support

“Employment no longer guarantees financial stability. Nor does being a two-income family. Rental stress – when people are spending more than 30% of income on rent – is also on the rise.”

As a result, many parents are finding it nearly impossible to plan for Christmas celebrations, gifts, or special meals.

“For many of the people we support, affording anything extra for Christmas can be next to impossible. We’re calling on South Australians to help ‘save’ Christmas. Every gift and donation we receive will brighten someone else’s Christmas.”

How Adelaide families can help

UnitingSA is asking for support in three key areas to help ensure every child wakes up to something special on Christmas morning:

Financial donations

These allow UnitingSA to direct funds to families who need urgent help.

Christmas gifts for children and teenagers (0–14 years)

Toys, books, games, puzzles, sports equipment, craft kits and age-appropriate gifts are all welcome.

Non-perishable food items

Such as pasta, sauces, soups, canned fruit, vegetables, and other staples that help families enjoy a festive meal.

Donations can be dropped off on weekdays at 58 Dale Street, Port Adelaide, or made online at unitingsa.com.au
