Firstival 2026 is back at South Australian libraries this July

South Australia's beloved library festival Firstival is back for its fourth year, with more than 300 events for kids, teens and families running across 130 public libraries throughout July 2026.

South Australia’s favourite library festival is returning for its fourth year, with Libraries SA announcing a packed program of more than 300 events running across the state’s 130 public libraries throughout July 2026.

Firstival runs from 1 to 31 July and is designed to encourage South Aussies of all ages to try something new, with events spanning everything from kids yoga and kite making to circus workshops and sourdough bread making.

A librarian in a green shirt reads aloud to six primary school-aged children in pyjamas, who sit on a green carpet holding stuffed animals in a library setting.

For families with children, the winter school holidays are well covered. Kids can enjoy activities including Homemade Book Week Costume Workshops, Biscuit Decorating, Kite Making and Kids Yoga. Younger visitors can also look forward to Wilbur’s Wildlife Visit, Amazing Drumming Monkeys, a Mini Science Fair, Mini Piñata Workshops and Tabletop Escape Room Sessions.

For teens, highlights include an intro to Dungeons and Dragons, Astrology for Beginners, Brush Pen Calligraphy, and Kaurna Night Skies Stories and Star Gazing.

State Library of SA Director Megan Berghuis said Firstival has been instrumental in reconnecting South Australians with their local libraries, with more than 20,000 new members joining the Libraries SA One Card Network since the festival launched in 2023.

“We are inviting South Australians to explore their imaginations, try something new or unexpected, and experience their libraries in ways they may never have before. With hundreds of events for all ages and interests, many of them free, we are excited to see libraries buzzing with energy, curiosity and creativity right across the state.”

Many events are free to attend, though some require advance booking, so check the program carefully before you go.
