Santa's Wonderland 2021

Santa’s Wonderland

Adelaide’s biggest Christmas event, Santa’s Wonderland, is back for another magical year, with the festive family spectacular running from 3 December – 24 December in Jubilee Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

It’s a Christmas celebration like no other, with more fun family activities than there are elves in Santa’s workshop, and so many magical memories waiting to be made. Think toboggan slides, ice skating, Christmas stage shows, selfies with Santa, roaming Christmas characters and the family favourite festive activity trail. Not to mention the all important three hours of unlimited rides!

Christmas in Rundle Mall

Silver bells, silver bells… it’s Christmas time in Rundle Mall! That’s right, South Australia’s biggest retail destination has had the full festive makeover with Rundle Mall unveiling its Christmas window display to bring cheer to shoppers young and old.

Ten activations will stretch across the length of Rundle Mall bringing joy, wonder and a desire to explore the Mall. Eight traditional Christmas windows are on display featuring local artists and presenting varied takes on the festive season, while the Paolo Sebastian dress exhibition, which launched at October’s Vogue Festival earlier this year, will evolve into a curated themed display.

lights of lobethal

Lights of Lobethal Festival

Is it Christmas in Adelaide without the Lights of Lobethal? Well we have good news! The largest community Christmas light display in the southern hemisphere is set to bring joy to South Australians for the first time since 2018. The iconic Lights of Lobethal proudly presented by RAA will return in 2021 following a two-year hiatus owing to the 2019 Cudlee Creek Bushfires and 2020 COVID-19-enforced shutdown.

The event will run from 12 – 31 December and is being presented for the first time by RAA. Driving the streets of Lobethal this time of year is an essential festive pilgrimage making for the perfect date night or family tradition. There are so many decorated homes to discover that will evoke childhood wonder and make memories for life. There are penguins, elves, Christmas dragons, Father Christmas riding a motorbike, Christmas sleighs and reindeers galore! Not to mention the town’s special new addition two-metre tall Koko koala who has been generously donated by Costco long with Frosty the Snow Man. Koko and Frosty are part of the Lobethal Lights committee’s new lending program and will be moving around throughout the festival so make sure you keep an eye out for them!

Not to be missed is a visit to local town heroes Bill and Peg’s house on 5 Christmas Lane, Lobethal who have once again outdone themselves with over 50,000 lights twinkling into the night. Make sure you walk their verandah and enjoy peering into their spectacular Christmas windows with miniature Christmas villages and other Christmas treasures collected over a lifetime.

Brewery Christmas Lights Display

The Brewery Christmas Riverbank Lights Display is a GO! We repeat, a GO! And it’s lucky because is it really Christmas in Adelaide without them? We think not!

The 2021 Christmas Lights Display along the riverbank at the Brewery will have a shortened duration this year due to COVID restrictions, open from Monday 13 December until Christmas Day inclusive.

To ensure patrons’ health and safety, guests will need to pre-book their free tickets for one of the four available 60-minute time slots each night of the display. There will be 500 free tickets available for each hour-long time slot, with a total of 2,000 tickets available per night.

Carols by Candlelight Adelaide 2021

SeaLink Carols by Candlelight will again be a virtual event this year, delivering Christmas cheer for both South Australian families and those tuning in across the nation thanks to Channel 7.

The televised concert – starring Matt Goss, Rhonda Burchmore, Samantha Jade and many more to be announced soon – provides a wonderful opportunity to get together with our nearest and dearest, light our candles and sing along to some of our favourite Christmas songs while supporting Novita and the great work they do for our community.

Father Christmas will be returning to DJ’s this year in Rundle Mall, with the iconic Magic Cave set to take up its usual residence on the second floor of David Jones.

Lego Reindeer

North Adelaide Village Christmas Display

The old bookstore in the North Adelaide Village has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland featuring a giant ride-on Lego sleigh. From 12 – 4pm every day until Christmas Eve, the 200,000 piece Lego masterpiece will be open for you to marvel and have your photo taken on.

The North Adelaide Christmas Village will also host free Christmas art classes run by the Ruth Tuck Art School, for children 5-10 years. These classes will run daily (Sunday excluded) from Monday 13 to Thursday 23 December.

King William Road Christmas Family Day

On Saturday 11 December, Santa and his elves will greet Adelaide locals for the King William Road Family Day. Santa will spread cheer to children and parents alike from 11 am to 3 pm, and anyone with Christmas wishes can offer them to his staff from the North Pole by writing letters, which Santa will read.

During the King William Road Family Day, there will be face painting, craft activities and live entertainment from local artists for all ages to enjoy.

Shoppers will be able to search for Christmas purchases, whether it’s a special gift or a new outfit. Special offers will apply on the day, awarding shoppers with complimentary gifts when they spend $20 or more in any of the precinct’s stores. To redeem your gift, there will be a King William Road Xmas cart on the street where buyers can show their proof of purchase.

The King William Road Family Day will be a COVID-safe event, with hand-sanitising stations provided across the precinct. Patrons are asked to abide by state government guidelines by wearing masks, adhering to social distancing and maintaining good hand hygiene – for everyone’s safety.

Giant Christmas Tree Victoria Square

Soaring 25 metres into the sky, Adelaide’s Giant Christmas Tree is back this year in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga. With 13,616 individually programmable LED lights, the Giant Christmas Tree is transformed into a dazzling light display each night of the city’s Christmas festival.

Lighting information:

  • From 17 November 2021 to 4 January 2022
  • Lighting takes place from 8:30pm to 2:30am
  • Light display loop lasts 10 minutes

The fountains will be on for the kids to splash in on a hot summer’s night under the Christmas lights.

The Xanadu Drive-In is an Australian-first movie experience, set to be hosted at the Torrens Parade Grounds on December 18 and 19.
