From Fridge to Furniture

Interior designers Cheryl and Kim couldn’t remember whether their fridge was stainless steel or white, due to all the mini masterpieces covering it, so they came up with a better plan… Turning children’s artwork into furnishings! What started with a funky bean bag for a friend…and friends… and family… and friends of family has now evolved into a business, because apparently a lot of people own a fridge with an aluminium surface ready to see the light of day again. Using dumple you can turn your child’s quirky, original creations into cushions, chairs, ottomans, pet beds and more. Cheryl says ‘The freedom that children express in their art is so natural. It’s not contrived. The naivety, the combination of colours, the textures, and sometimes the quirkiness, are what we love.’ Little ones will find pride and inspiration in having their very own creations admired and blown up on a large scale. Maybe you’ll even inspire the next Monet. Be sure to catch dumple at KIDDO Markets this November 4! dumple.com.au @dumple_desgins

Urban Suburban

Mum Angela, little Louis and Dad Toby spent the weekend in the new Land Rover Discovery Sport SD4 HSE. Here’s what they had to say after enjoying a fresh spring morning with their new wheels along King William Road. DISCOVERY SPORT SD4 HSE IN FIJI WHITE WITH EBONY GRAINED LEATHER SEATS ANGELA LIKED: • The cleverly configured layout allows you to seat up to seven people comfortably. The cargo volume of the Discovery Sport SD4 HSE is 981 litres, this means that I can accommodate for dropping Louis’s friends home from sport practice with all their gear as well!• Blind Spot and Reverse Traffic Detection is very handy. Having access to this technology makes you wonder how you ever drove… or parked for that matter, without it!• Finally there’s adequate legroom from someone who is tall! The high and comfortable front chairs, and the reclining back seats deliver plenty of legroom or extra room for groceries and kindy bags etc.• Two of my absolute favourite features (apart from the very good looking leather interior and heated seats) have to be the keyless auto entry… (who has time to be digging around in a bag as deep and cluttered as your child’s toy box to locate keys?) and secondly the electric tailgate. Such a simple but practical luxury. TOBY LIKED: • The Discovery Sport SD4 HSE has great off road capabilities, which would be handy for weekend trips or camping holidays as well as.• The Lane Departure Warning is a great safety feature for those long holiday drives.• The luxurious leather, interior fit-out with memory foam, heated seats and climate control really makes for a comfortable drive.• My Spotify playlist sounded so bright, rich and balanced with the enhanced Meridian 380 watt 10 speaker system.• I’m conscious of our carbon footprint and fuel consumption. The Discovery Sport SD4 HSE is surprisingly fuel-efficient and uses Ingenium Diesels to help for a clean diesel engine. The SCR system cuts tailpipe emissions by injecting AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust gas, where it reacts with the NOx and converts it into less harmful nitrogen and water.• Handy Bluetooth connectivity is great to ensure that my attention is on the road. Such a simple but practical luxury. LOUIS LIKED: • The Fixed Panoramic Roof is great for games of eye spy and it was super fun when it rained.• The car is like a robot! It auto-dims the lights and knows when the windscreen wipers need to go on, because it’s raining!• Privacy glass means you can make silly faces at people outside of the window, often without them noticing. FAMILY VERDICT The Discovery Sport SD4 is a premium SUV, which cleverly caters to families like us who want a deluxe city car, which can also transform into an off-road vehicle! The interior and exterior are effortlessly luxurious, whilst also being rugged, relaxed, and roomy enough to allow for all the miscellaneous family sports and activities you could think of! We really appreciated the comfort levels of this SUV. The Discovery Sport SD4 offers a superb level of interior features and additional options. We would definitely opt for the Fixed Panoramic Roof and Blind Spot and Reverse Traffic Detection, as these added an essential level of relaxation and enjoyment to the overall driving experience. The Discovery Sport SD4 HSE is available to drive away from $77,945. Yoli & Otis: Wearing is Caring

Wearing is Caring Simplistic, earthy tones and natural fibres sum up this chic, charming Australian brand founded in Byron Bay. Yoli & Otis began after Lena Catterick, gave birth to her first daughter and became passionate about babywearing. Lena began producing uber-comfortable, herbal dyed baby carriers and slings that don’t require any complex tying. Everyone holds fond memories of falling (pretending or not) asleep in the car and being picked up and carried to bed by their parents. There’s something intimate and nurturing about the closeness of being held by your parents like that. This is the kind of magic that Lena wanted to channel into her own brand. From these humble beginnings this warmth has since translated into a vast range of products! Yoli & Otis also produce incredibly adorable, childrenswear, womenswear and accessories. Choose The Scenic Route

Choosing the right family car is not an easy task. With so many SUVs on the market it can be hard to differentiate between all of the options and then narrow down exactly what specifications you want, without sacrificing one thing for another. Brooke has a growing family and knows that her top priorities are safety and functionality. The perfect car for Brooke would incorporate these requirements and be aesthetically pleasing at the same time, because just like the taco ad says ‘porque no los dos?’ Find out what Brooke thought of the new Volkswagen Allspace Tiguan when she took it for a test drive with the family for the weekend! Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 132TSI Comfortline 2.0 Litre in Deep Black Peal with Driver Assistance Package and Luxury Package SAFETY I was impressed that the Tiguan Allspace scored a maximum five-star rating in the ANCAP safety rating and it’s definitely no surprise with the extensive list of safety features listed in this SUV. All busy mums who have battled reverse parking with a car full of vocal children will appreciate the reverse camera, and front and rear parking sensors. The Tiguan Allspace also has seven airbags including dual front, front side, driver’s knee and full-length curtain coverage. I was wowed by the auto emergency and Manoeuvre braking*. The car can brake if the rear sensors detect an obstacle or alternatively it will gently steer you into your lane if it needs to. This is really helpful with blindspots when changing lanes. FUNCTIONALITY It’s as though Volkswagen delved into the mind of a busy mum and catered to just about every need possible when designing this car. The Tiguan Allspace can seat up to 7 people as it comes with two additional seats in the back. The boot space is 230L with all seats up and with all seats folded down it can hold up to 1755L… that’s a lot of space for cricket bats and beach toys. Having kids who love outdoor activities means that storage is always an important factor for me. There’s even about 6 different cupholders, meaning I can have the kids’ juice boxes, my cup of coffee and even the old tea mug I’ve forgotten to wash safety positioned. Everything is also nicely lined with rubber or felt to stop things rattling around. We’ve all had arguments over the temperature in the car before, but now we can agree to disagree. The Tiguan Allspace has three-zone climate control with driver, front passenger and back seat temperature. One of my favourite features was the App-Connect~ where you can access your smartphone’s screen, selected apps, maps and music on your car’s touchscreen and voice control. AESTHETIC I’ve often found that a lot of the family-sized SUVs available on the market are big and clunky, without actually utilising the space inside. Visually, the Tiguan Allspace is ultra sleek and in proportion, whilst also having great storage options and the ability to seat 7 people. The interior of the car is just as impressive as the exterior and I just can’t go past the black leather upholstery^. The optional Luxury package includes leather seats^, an electrically adjustable drivers seat with memory function, heated front seats and a panoramic electric glass sunroof. We would probably pay the premium to include these features as they supplemented the overall comfort of the car very well. OVERALL VERDICT This car is built for families, it’s like Volkswagen thought, ‘What do families want? They want safety, somewhere to put their stuff and something that looks good and then added as much technology as possible on top. Volkswagen has paid high attention to detail with this model and there is a particular focus on interior features making it a wonderful family car both inside and out. 10 FAMILY FRIENDLY FEATURES PEDESTRIAN MONITORING FRONT ASSIST WITH CITY EMERGENCY BREAK* LANE ASSIST* DRIVER FATIGUE DETECTION SYSTEM* 3-ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL STURDY VIENNA LEATHER APPOINTED UPHOLSTERY^ APP-CONNECT~ FOR SMARTPHONE KEYLESS ACCESS START 8″ DISCOVER PRO INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM USB PORT (THREE AS STANDARD) To test drive or to find out more information about the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace contact Solitaire Volkswagen 30 Belair Road Hawthorn SA 5062 37-41 Main North Road Medindie SA 5081 1300 857 671 Solitairevolkswagen.com.au Images by Meaghan Coles Photography

Eco Crayons: Colour Safe

Colour Safe Put down the glue and get ready to chew until your hearts content kids because Eco Crayons are 100% plant based making them 100% non-toxic, vegan and biodegradable. These handmade crayons are made with 100% natural ingredients like waxes and butters. The colour pigments are even derived from plants, roots, seeds and flowers so you can colour the rainbow naturally. When Mum, teacher and Eco Crayons founder, Naomi Parsons began researching what was really in the kind of products we watch our kids chew on, she was horrified. The use of pigments containing heavy metals, paraffin (from petroleum), synthetic oxides and micas, plastics and asbestos particles is alarming to us too…. All Eco Crayon waxes and colours are food grade so \ if they do happen to make their way into little mouths they are completely safe! It’s not just the crayons that are eco friendly. Even Eco Crayon pouches are made from 100% organic fair trade cotton, coconut husk buttons and hemp cord that is unwaxed, biodegradable and vegan dyed. All labels and packaging are 100% recyclable and vegan dye printed. This makes both the art mediums and the packaging eco-friendly and sustainable! Keep an eye out for the newest element of Naomi’s business. eco-friendly botanical paint, coming soon! We asked mumpreneur, Naomi a few more questions about her business: What made you decide to start your own business? It was never my intention to start a business, it was just something that organically evolved. I’m a special education teacher by trade and my daughter Arleena, who is 6, is a chewer, so all of the little people in my world were putting drawing tools in their mouths, often covered in colour leeching into and staining their skin for days. This was the birth of Eco Crayons. Do you make the goods yourself? Yes, I am one crazy mumma! Every single crayon that leaves my studio has been handcrafted. I use a small batch process so that there is more control over the outcome – plant pigments areextremely sensitive to work with. Every batch and crayon is hand weighed, hand poured, hand cut and hand boxed. Having a handmade product is important to me as it allows me to combine my love of science with the creative part of my soul. It also means that I have control over the manufacturing process and can produce a product which has a very green environmentalfootprint. What is the importance of buying our kids natural, eco friendly products? One of the most confronting lessons on my journey so far is uncovering what is actually in kids products. As parents we just take for granted that if something is listed as non-toxic then it is safe for our kids, right? As a mum and teacher I trusted these messages too, however, many of the ingredients in commercial crayons are synthetic and chemically engineered. Surprisingly many eco friendly crayons are not actually sustainable as they contain palm oil and non-renewable mined micas and clays to colour them. ecocrayons.com.au@ecocrayons

HEYDAY Store: Design in Mind

This stylish mum of one has seamlessly transitioned from hospitality to retail bringing us Adelaide’s newest one-stop-design-shop. We chat to Karah, owner and buyer of HEYDAY, about how she has hand-picked her products while staying true to her core principals of sustainability, creativity and ethically produced goods for the family and home. Tell us about the concept for HEYDAY? And how it came about. HEYDAY Store is about showcasing beautiful and useful things from small and independent makers. We’ve taken a ‘general store’ approach to stocking the store, and carry goods for kids, women and home – in each instance though, we are passionately enthusiastic about the pieces we bring to the store and believe, now more than ever, it is important to value the things we purchase and to know something about where they came from and who made them. We also wanted to create a space that brings back pleasure in browsing, in taking the time to handle and experience the wares in person, and in making mindful purchases that will last. What are some of the brands that you stock? The list of makers we stock so far cover local, national and international territory and many of the goods we have in-store have not been available in Adelaide before. In some cases, the makers we’re stocking only have a very limited presence Australia-wide. We have plenty of ethically produced apparel, handcrafted children’s toys, organic textiles, ceramics and jewellery, and a tightly edited selection of books. Some of the makers we carry for children include Taninaka, the Wandering Workshop, Buck & Baa, Pappe, Mad About Mini, Le Edit, Dove & Dovelet, One Two Tree, Pashom, and Linen & Lime. For women we have Baggu, Vege Threads, Good Studios, Julie White, Sophie Monet, Pansy and Happy in Finland (amongst others), while our list of home goods makers includes Futagami, Klay NZ, E Heid Ceramics, Subtle Bodies, and Addition Studios. What was the reasoning behind having such a unique list of brands? We really want to offer a selection of goods that are hard to find elsewhere and to make sure that when customers shop with us, they not only find something unique, but something that has a compelling story behind it in terms of the maker’s creative processes or the sustainability of their business practices. Tell us about some of your favourite local designers? There is a real untapped stream of talent in Adelaide and maybe not enough local independent stores to showcase it, so we are loving presenting wares from E Heid Ceramics, Julie White, Linen & Lime, Good Studios and Weft Textiles amongst others. You opened the store not long after your first son Sidney was born, how did you manage to do both at the same time and has he influenced what you buy? The store runs on lots of late nights at the moment, but that’s OK because I’m loving combining motherhood with a start-up business that I feel passionate about! I also have a terrific pair of girls working with me at HEYDAY who were with me at the cafe I used to own (Pickle in the Middle) – it really helps that we know each other well and are all on the same page about what we’re doing at HEYDAY. When I had Sidney and started looking at buying things for kids, I realised there wasn’t the selection available in Adelaide that I was hoping for, so we are proud to stock makers who aren’t around everywhere else and to focus on organic fibres for the apparel and natural materials for the toys. What can we expect to see in the future at HEYDAY store? Our web shop is almost ready to launch and is the next major development for us, which will be a great way for people to browse our wares from the comfort of their own living rooms! Then we are bringing in some new pieces from a few more hand selected makers that we’re really excited about – stay tuned for that! We welcome HEYDAY with open arms and any other stores that give us more choice and source beautiful things both locally and from around the globe. Check out HEYDAY’s Kids 20% Off Sale on now! Tellkiddo: Maternity Modernity

Tellkiddo is proof that it is possible to survive maternity-leave and not just survive but thrive. During that time, you may even build a global business like Maria Sabbah, the Swedish company’s founder. Beginning in 2014 Tellkiddo now has a cult following on Instagram. This playful, unisex brand is the perfect, modern day example of the power of the internet, when paired with innovation. All products are designed by Maria whose initial intention was to create monochrome style objects, with black and white contrasts, so that her baby could develop his eyesight. Soon, her son wasn’t the only one that these beautiful, minimalist designs were popular with. Her pictures were re-blogged by influential interior-minded parents and spread like wildfire. Then, Tellkiddo was born. On the website you will find environmentally-friendly and sustainable interior objects like storage bags, bedding and prints. Maria says ‘We are not following fast changes in trends, we want to support the slow interior industry with our conscious way of working’. @tellkiddo tellkiddo.com

Daisy + Hen: More In-Store

More, In-Store Daisy + Hen isn’t just a shop, it’s an experience, now open in Glenelg! Ever spent countless time scrolling through Instagram, browsing for a product, frustratedly wishing you could touch, feel and try it? Daisy + Hen owner Gina Britton wanted to create a physical space with a bespoke mix of all her favourite bits and bobs so that she could bring the fun back to shopping. Daisy + Hen houses over 130 of the best local and international brands in children’s retail. Gina says that the original Tanunda store would welcome customers daily from Adelaide, who would travel to the Barossa specifically to purchase their products. Hence, she felt it was time to expand and bring the concept and range to metro Adelaide. The new Daisy + Hen in Glenelg is a larger store with the same heart and beautiful range as the original shop. Gina says, ‘You feel like you’ve walked into your own Instagram feed full of your favourite brands and products! Our store is so much more than a shop – it is a destination, an emporium, a place to wander and admire.’ ‘There is a difference between seeing something online and walking into a store and being able to interact with it.’ This goes for little people too, if you have a curious mini-shopper who likes to touch and grab things, don’t despair – you wont be glared at. Gina says she aims to provide a ‘warm, friendly and fun shopping experience’ and that staff are known to cuddle little babes to give mum a moment to herself to explore. The selection process for the stores products is basically the type of item that Gina herself would buy and one that is ‘beautiful, functional and represents great value.’ ‘It is really important to me to work with brands that we align with. Brands with ethical and sustainable practices and businesses who operate with heart.’ As well as providing local small and handmade businesses a platform to exhibit their products, Gina likes to give back to the community through events. The stores biggest event is their annual Easter Hunt in Tanunda. VIP and special seasonal shopping nights also add to the pros of being part of the Daisy + Hen community. Pop past and explore for yourself! @daisyandhen daisyandhen.com.au  56 Murray St Tanunda SA08 8563 0116 120C Jetty Rd Glenelg SA08 8294 0056
