Adelaide Fringe Review: Charlie Caper – The Future

Adelaide Fringe poster for Charlie Caper - The Future.
A charming, high tech magic show where Charlie Caper combines old world showmanship with AI, robotics and sleight of hand, creating a fun and mind bending experience for audiences of all ages.

Charlie Caper’s The Future is a delightful blend of classic magic and forward-looking imagination. From the moment he walks on stage, Charlie’s natural warmth sets the tone. There’s an unmistakable old-world charm about him – the polite showman with impeccable manners – yet he pairs it with genuine curiosity about technology and the possibilities of the future. That contrast becomes the heart of the show.

Long-time fans like us will be especially pleased by the return of his recurring bow tie gag, which continues to deliver laughs and exasperated gasps every time it appears. The trick evolves throughout the performance, becoming a playful thread that ties the show together and reminds us that even the smallest props can hold big surprises.

A major highlight of the show is Charlie’s AI companion, Bob. Rather than feeling like a gimmick, Bob becomes an engaging partner in the magic, creating moments that feel both humorous and genuinely mind-bending. Their interactions blur the line between trick and technology, leaving the audience wondering where the illusion ends and the innovation begins. Then there’s Sparky, Charlie’s robot dog, who steals hearts the moment he appears. Sparky brings warmth and personality to the stage, transforming a piece of technology into something surprisingly endearing. I’ve never applauded a robot before, but something tells me that if Charlie has anything to do with it, it won’t be the last time I do.

Charlie’s mastery of sleight of hand is still evident in this show, so those of us who know him best for this won’t be disappointed, His gentle and courteous inclusion of selected audience members makes this perfect family viewing – each of our daughters aged 5, 10 and 13 were completely captivated and utterly mystified by what they witnessed on stage, just the way I assume Charlie would want it.

What makes The Future special is how effortlessly Charlie balances wonder, humour, and technological curiosity. Part science and technology lesson/part magic show, he reminds us that magic has always been about exploring the unknown. With Bob, Sparky, and that mischievous bow tie along for the ride, Charlie Caper proves that the future of magic is not only clever – it’s full of fun.

Rating: FIVE STARS!
