My four-year-old daughter, Zara, and I were treated to an advanced screening of Paddington in Peru (in cinemas 1 January 2025) at Palace Nova Cinemas Prospect.
Directed by Dougal Wilson, the latest film in the Paddington series is as charming as the others. This sequel takes Paddington far from London and into the vibrant landscapes of Peru, where he embarks on a journey to discover more about his past and his origins.
The story begins when Paddington receives a letter from a nun at the Home for Retired Bears who expresses concern about his Aunt Lucy. Paddington decides to travel to Peru, the country where he was originally found as a young cub. His adventure starts with an exciting treasure hunt when he uncovers an ancient map that leads to a hidden Incan treasure. Paddington faces a series of challenges, from navigating the Peruvian mountains to deciphering clues that could uncover the treasure’s location. As always, Paddington’s trademark politeness, optimism, and curiosity lead to both humorous and touching moments throughout the film.
One of the standout features of Paddington in Peru is its stunning animation and vibrant setting. The lush Peruvian landscapes, from the towering Andes to the bustling streets of Lima, are brought to life, making the film visually striking. The film also gives children a glimpse into Peruvian culture, introducing them to the country’s traditions, foods, and even some of its wildlife.
Of course, Paddington himself remains the heart of the film. His innocence and good intentions often lead him into comedic situations, and it’s impossible not to smile at his genuine desire to help others, even when things go hilariously wrong.
The film’s message is simple yet powerful: the importance of family, kindness, and embracing new adventures with an open heart. Paddington’s unwavering optimism is contagious, and his journey to find answers about his past underscores the universal themes of identity and belonging.
Palace Nova’s advanced screening was fabulous, particularly with adorable touches like each moviegoer receiving a marmalade sandwich with a toothpick holding the British flag! While the citrus fruit preserve brought me back to fond memories of my grandpa, let’s just say Zara isn’t as much of a fan of marmalade as Paddington!
With its mix of adventure, comedy, and heartfelt moments, this movie is a perfect choice for a family movie night these school holidays.
