DIY: Making Christmas Memories – And Decorations – This Christmas

We asked Alexis from The Festive Co. aka Co Host of KIDDO chats aka CRAFT QUEEN, art master, and general glitter guru, if she could whip up an easy Christmas craft for us and... hey presto! She came up with this awesome DIY activity just for us, for making Christmas decos with our kids (and some happy festive memories along the way of course)!

with Alexis from The Festive Co.

We wanted to share a DIY Christmas craft with our KIDDO community, but after one too many incidences with pipe cleaners and glitter glue, we weren’t confident we could pull something off ourselves.

So we asked Alexis from The Festive Co. aka Co Host of KIDDO chats aka CRAFT QUEEN, art master, and general glitter guru, if she could whip something up for us and… hey presto! She came up with this awesome DIY activity just for us, for making Christmas decos with our kids (and some happy festive memories along the way of course)!

Sounds like an activity for the first week of school holidays to us!

MAKING DIY CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS WITH YOUR KIDS

I absolutely love Christmas traditions, from finding a tree, pulling out the family Santa photos and playing carols (Mariah of course!) But this year I wanted to start a new tradition that all the kids could participate in. I absolutely love working with air-dry clay, so I let the kids go wild and make their own clay decorations for our tree.

Hopefully it’s something we can do every year and look back on when they’re grown and too cool for crafting with me.

What you’ll need

All you need is a pack of air dry clay, some paint or coloured markers – which are a bit less messy with little ones – cookie cutters or fun utensils and string!

Cookie cutters will help smaller kids get creative, while older children can let their imaginations run wild, using doilies to press in patterns, adding sprinkles, using their finger prints to make a Santa beard… the possibilities are endless.

TIP: Don’t forget to add a hole for string! Using a toothpick works well.

After they Dry

After letting them dry (turn decorations over after a few hours to speed up the process) make sure you or the kids write their name and the year on the back so you can keep a track of the memories.

TIP: Encourage the kids to keep the clay fairly thick as they roll it out. While it takes a bit longer to dry, it will make the decoration stronger and less likely to break over time.
