The unusually cold and wet first Sunday of the Adelaide Fringe saw myself and my daughter, Frankie, aged 7, heading to the big red tent, The Octagon, in Gluttony to see The Pack.
The Pack is a 60-minute fun and uplifting circus show that delivers exactly what it promises. Created and performed by the young artists from the South Australian Circus Centre, it’s energetic, well-rehearsed and had us in awe.
The set design is simple. Everyday objects are used in clever ways, turning familiar items into part of the action. It keeps the focus on the performers and their skills rather than flashy extras.
The cast show strong teamwork throughout. You can see the trust between them in the lifts, throws and balances. Their endurance is clear too; the pace stays high from start to finish. It feels polished and professional.
There are plenty of exciting acrobatics, especially in the aerial work. The crowd responded loudly to the big tricks, and there were lots of wide-eyed kids in the audience.
Our kid reviewer summed it up best: “It was great, especially when they put her in the washing machine!”
If you’re looking for a positive, family-friendly show for primary school aged kids and up, The Pack is an excellent choice. It’s an inspiring show, and it showcases the strength of young South Australian performers.
