Join Starlight for the ride that gives back

Starlight Children’s Foundation is encouraging Australians around the country to join the ride that gives back this September, for its annual Tour de Kids 30-day virtual cycling challenge. The challenge aims to raise $750,000 to deliver happiness to over 19,000 seriously ill children and their families across Australia.

Tour de Kids is the ride that gives back, not only to participants but to sick kids. While riders enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of being active, their fundraising efforts will support Starlight’s vital hospital programs for seriously ill children and their families, including Captain Starlight and the Starlight Express Rooms.

Participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to clock up their kilometres in any way that suits them. Whether it be a weekend cycle, leisurely family bike ride, cycling to work or in a spin class, every kilometre helps bring happiness to sick kids in need.

At just five weeks old, Harry was diagnosed with a large brain tumour and had to be airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery. Heartbreakingly, after his surgery Harry’s parents could only hold him for ten minutes each day for a month due to the medical equipment required to keep him alive.

After spending months recovering from surgery, Harry had to endure 72 weeks of chemotherapy. During this difficult time in hospital, Captain Starlight helped little Harry through the pain of his ordeal. As he has become older, the Starlight Express Room has emerged as a safe space for Harry, full of fun and laughter, where he can escape the world of needles and treatments for a while.

Harry’s Dad Adam says, “No hospital trip is complete without a visit to Captain Starlight and the Starlight Express Room! Knowing Harry would have fun, and have happy memories associated with his time in hospital made each visit easier. Not only for Harry but also us as parents.”

Supported by professional Australian Triathlete Craig Alexander, TV personality Tristan MacManus and Rugby League legend Sam Thaiday, Tour de Kids encourages all Australians to get active for a good cause. Starlight CEO Louise Baxter says, “Being diagnosed with a serious illness can change the course of a child’s life forever, but being sick shouldn’t mean missing out on the fun of childhood. Starlight exists to brighten the lives of sick kids, turning pain and fear into fun, laughter and joy.”

“We hope the community will hop on their bike and take part in Tour de Kids to improve their own health and also change a child’s life.”

Tour de Kids fundraisers will be rewarded for their efforts with exclusive merchandise including an official Tour de Kids Santini cycling jersey, sports socks, a champion’s medal, exclusive VIP t-shirt and more. Plus, everyone who registers for the challenge before 31 August will go into the running to win a Cube Reaction Hybrid Pro 500 Electric Hardtail Mountain Bike from 99 Bikes valued at $5,299.

The challenge is proudly supported by Tour de Kids partners Santini, 99 Bikes, Zwift, Bike Chain, SIS, BBB Cycling, Northwave, Bryton and Basil.

Founded in 2001, Tour de Kids was the first ever charity bike ride in Australia. Since its inception, participants have raised over $10.9 million supporting more than 279,487 sick kids and their families.

Participants can sign up as an individual or team and ride the distance any time between 1st – 30th of September 2024.
