The Best of Fringe Magic delivers exactly what it promises and then some. Starring Stuart Lightbody, Benedict Thiveanathan, Sam King and Mika Harris, this fast paced showcase brings together four distinct magical styles in one thoroughly entertaining hour.
Rather than competing for attention, the performers complement one another beautifully. Sam King hosts the show, bringing a mischievous energy that keeps the room light and joyful. His own magic was humorous and clever, the first magician I’ve ever seen ‘taste’ cards in order to guess or reveal what they are. His ability to work with the audience to build ambience, suspense and fun was second to none and my girls thoroughly enjoyed his delivery, and their dad being called on stage to help with the card tasting trick.
Mika Harris was the guest performer for the night, keeping the momentum high with his quick wit and incredible skills with a rope, a ball and a cup. Stuart Lightbody then followed, a family favourite of ours, loved by us for his polished performances, charisma and storytelling skills. He blew minds with his transformation of three rings provided by the audience and left everybody in shock after his engagement with two audience members on stage, connecting them with the power of the mind. Benedict then quietly and unassumingly commanded the stage, performing a purse trick that still has my family scratching our heads.
Wrapping the show up was a collaborative effort between the magicians and Brian, an older gentleman who inadvertently became the star of the show by naming a sock and allowing himself to be at the mercy of three magicians. What followed was a crowd pleasing moment of astonishment, a piece of magic so utterly entertaining and engaging that my girls are still talking about it 24 hours later.
What makes this show stand out is its variety. From intimate close up illusions to larger, more elaborate moments of awe, the pacing never falters. There’s genuine audience interaction throughout, but it never feels forced, volunteers are treated warmly, and the laughs come naturally. This is a tight, well produced collaboration that celebrates the creativity and skill of contemporary magic. Whether you’re a lifelong magic fan or simply looking for an hour of smart, feel good entertainment, The Best of Fringe Magic is a show that leaves you smiling and wondering how on earth they did it.
