If you’ve ever found yourself in the car at 5:30pm, navigating swimming and soccer while fielding a request for a snack that isn’t in the bag, this issue is for you.

We’re exploring life beyond the bell, the hours between school pickup and bedtime that don’t always get the attention they deserve. What do kids actually do after school, and does it matter? The further we pulled at that thread, the more interesting it became. It turns out those hours contribute more to our children’s overall health and wellbeing than we might think: shaping how children see themselves, building resilience that a report card can’t measure, and giving their brains exactly the kind of unstructured time neuroscience tells us they need.

To that end, we asked neuroscientist Lyndsey Collins-Praino what a child’s brain is actually doing during play and downtime; the answer is more fascinating than you might expect. Psychologist Madhavi Nawana Parker explores how extracurriculars shape identity and belonging, and honestly addresses the flip side: the pressure some children feel when activities outside school become yet another space to perform. There’s also a beautiful piece on art-based learning from Adelaide teacher Valando Demetriou, and because we know the after-school rush is as much a logistical challenge as an emotional one, we’ve looked hard at the real cost of keeping kids involved, the uniforms, the fees, the travel, and what support actually exists in SA for families feeling the pinch.

We hope this issue gives you something to think about, something to try, and maybe something to let go of. The after-school hours are already doing more good than you realise. And if nothing else, know that the chaos is entirely normal.
