Dance at Tatachilla Lutheran College

Students perform on stage in red and white costumes during a school dance showcase.
From jazz and tap to hip hop and contemporary, Tatachilla's school dance program gives students from Year 4 to Year 12 the opportunity to build confidence, creativity and lifelong skills.

When parents think about dance, they often picture costumes, concerts and carefully rehearsed routines. But great dance programs offer something much bigger: confidence, creativity, friendships and skills that last long after the music stops.

At Tatachilla, students have the opportunity to join one of South Australia’s largest and most dynamic school dance programs, where they can explore movement, express themselves creatively and build confidence throughout their school years – whether they are stepping into dance for the first time or continuing to pursue a long-held passion.

Students can begin dance classes from Year 4, with opportunities continuing through to Year 12. Classes include jazz, tap and hip hop, allowing students to develop strong foundations while exploring different styles and discovering what they enjoy most.

As students progress into senior years, dance opportunities expand further. Dance becomes an elective subject in Years 9 to 12, where students explore choreography, performance and creative processes while extending into contemporary and lyrical styles.

For students seeking additional challenge and extension, Tatachilla also offers an audition-based Arts Academy program for students in Years 7 to 11, providing opportunities for talented performers to further develop their skills alongside like-minded peers.

Importantly, dance is about much more than technique. Participation helps students develop coordination, resilience, teamwork and self-confidence while providing valuable opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

Performance also plays an important role in the student experience. Throughout the school year, students have opportunities to showcase their talents through Tatachilla’s annual Dance Showcase and the biennial school musical, as well as through community performances such as the City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant and the McLaren Vale Christmas Pageant. These experiences build confidence while allowing students to work towards shared creative goals.

Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to broaden their experiences even further. Each year, selected Year 10 and 11 students travel interstate to attend a national dance festival, participating in workshops and masterclasses led by industry professionals across a wide range of dance genres.

For many families, choosing a school means looking beyond academics alone. They are seeking an environment where children feel known, supported and inspired to discover who they are.

Dance can play an important role in that journey – helping children build confidence, find their voice and discover that sometimes the greatest growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone and onto the stage.
