There’s something about the after-school window. Shoes off, bags dropped, and suddenly it’s “I’m starving” before you’ve even unpacked the lunchbox.

And then comes the cycle. Snack, another snack, then “what’s for dinner?” five minutes later.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. One of the easiest ways to keep the kids out of the pantry is to look at what you’re offering for that first snack after school.

At Supermarket Swap, we’re always talking about simple swaps, and after-school snacks are one of the best places to start.

Here are a few easy swaps we use on repeat at home.

Crackers that actually go further

Flavoured crackers can be a quick grab, but they often don’t keep kids satisfied for long. Instead, try pairing a simpler option like Ceres Organics Brown Rice Cakes with cheese slices. It might take an extra minute, but we promise it’s worth it.

Ceres Organics Brown Rice Cakes Original 110g
Ingredients: Jasmine Brown Rice (Certified Organic), Water, Sea Salt.

The Organic Milk Co Organic Cheddar Slices 250g
Ingredients: Pasteurised Organic Milk, Salt, Non Animal Non GMO Enzyme, Culture.

A yoghurt upgrade

Muesli, nut or yoghurt bars are convenient, but many have long ingredient lists filled with flavours, additives and preservatives. A bowl of Jalna Natural Greek Yoghurt with some muesli or fruit is just as quick to put together and a little more substantial in the afternoon.

Jalna Greek Style Natural Yoghurt 1kg
Ingredients: Whole Milk, Cream (from Milk), Live Cultures (from Milk) (Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Lactis, Lactobacillus Casei).

Sunsol Natural Muesli Almond Cashew Macadamia & Walnut 500g
Ingredients: Whole Grains (75%) [Oats, Barley, Wheat, Triticale (Wheat, Rye)], Nuts [Almond (5%), Cashew (5%), Macadamia (2%), Walnut (2%)], Seeds [Sunflower (4%), Pepita (2%), Linseed (2%)], Wheat Bran Straws.

Fruit and veg with a little extra

Fruit and vegetables are always a great option served as they are, but you can take them further by adding something alongside. Try apple slices with Mayver’s Peanut Butter, or carrot sticks with Nuffin Hommus. Still simple, still accessible, but much more likely to bridge the gap to dinner.

Mayver’s Smooth Peanut Butter 375g
Ingredients: Roasted Peanuts (99.3%) & Sea Salt.

Nuffin Hommus Dip 200g
Ingredients: Chickpeas 52%, Water, Canola Oil, Olive Oil, Tahini, Vinegar, Garlic, Lemon Juice & Salt.
