Why I’m taking my child to Young Adelaide Voices Come & Try Day in July!

We hear from a mum-of-two, Francesca, who sings the praises of Young Adelaide Voices (YAV) choir.

As a parent, I’m always looking for opportunities that help my child grow and learn—creatively, socially, and emotionally. That’s why my 15-year-old is already enrolled, and why I’m taking my 7-year-old to the YAV Come & Try Day on 23 July 2025, held at Burnside City Uniting Church.

We’re not a serious musical family, and at first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I quickly realised this isn’t about being a star or having a perfect voice. There are no auditions for younger ones—just singing for the joy of it, guided by passionate, experienced teachers who really understand kids.

Here’s just a snippet of YAV on YouTube. Press play below to check out YAV’s 35th anniversary concert – Food Glorious Food.

YAV has been around for more than 35 years. It began as the Adelaide Girls Choir and now welcomes all. There are groups for all ages, from beginners right through to teens and even adults. There are exciting performance opportunities for all choirs.

What stood out most to me was how welcoming and inclusive the environment is. The focus is on fun, confidence, teamwork, and expression—so much more than just singing.

After her first session, my daughter said: “I didn’t know singing with other kids would make me feel so happy. I can’t wait to go back!”

That sealed it for me.

Things to know:

1. YAV is independent and not faith affiliated.

2. No experience needed—just a voice.

3. All staff have current Working with Children clearances, follow strong safety and supervision policies and are super-friendly!

If you have a 5–10-year-old who enjoys music or just needs a place to belong, I really encourage you to give this a go and register here.

Come to YAV’s next Come & Try on Wednesday, 23 July 2025 at Burnside City Uniting Church! Register here.
