SA MARITIME MUSEUM EXTENDS PLAY SCHOOL’S 50TH CELEBRATIONS

Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty and Jemima will be looked after by the South Australian Maritime Museum for a while longer as the Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years exhibition remains on display until 16 August.

Play School Still Docked at The Port

All aboard, little mateys! It’s not too late to play about in the Port with Play School!

The doors to South Australia’s Maritime Museum have reopened this month with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, and all your favourite Play School characters are still onboard and can’t wait to see you!

That’s right, Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty and Jemima will be looked after by the South Australian Maritime Museum for a while longer as the Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years exhibition remains on display until 16 August.

All visitors to the museum—especially the young and young-at-heart—can take a look through the round, square or arched windows at the special 50th birthday travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with the ABC.

“We were really lucky that Big Ted and friends were already staying with us when we had to close the museum’s doors because of COVID-19 restrictions,” said Maritime Museum Director Paul Rees. “They had such a great time with us that – now the Maritime Museum has reopened – they’ve decided to stay a little while before heading off to their next stop around Australia.”

Play School has been a cornerstone of children’s television for decades and this nationally touring exhibition comes to South Australia packed full of history and iconic objects from the set.

So take a cardboard box, a paper hat, a whole lot of imagination, and you can set sail on the high seas again, tackle mythical sea creatures, be an explorer, a pirate or a captain of your ship. This is the kind of creative learning and fun that Play School is all about!

Bookings are highly recommended, with fixed session times and limited capacity to ensure a safe experience for everyone in line with state and federal government guidelines.

Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years is a travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with the ABC and is presented by The History Trust of South Australia’s Maritime Museum.

Happy Birthday Play School will be on display at the South Australian Maritime Museum until Sunday 16 August 2020.
