SA LIBRARIES FOR THE FRIENDS, BOOKS AND NOOKS!

Take a Look in the Book Nook Libraries are no longer places that you are told to be quiet, they are a community and a meeting place for all kinds of activities! Kiddos these days are even luckier than we were. As well as books, there are now magazines, toys, computers, performances, workshops and games all at their fingertips! Over 600,000 South Australians have an active one-library membership card, and between them they borrowed 15.2million items last year! From an eco perspective, libraries are a good place to reuse and recycle in a world where we over consume. They are also cost effective! Libraries offer free internet and computer access, lend out CDs and DVDs. Many also host JP services, and lend out toys, computer tablets, and sometimes even garden equipment! Libraries are magical places that facilitate discovery, creativity and imagination from a very young age. They’re often the first place that you fall down the rabbit hole, conquer the high seas, attend Wizard School or battle a pirate. They pave the way to a world of learning and often play an important role in shaping our entire perspective. We all fondly look back on the experiences derived from fairytales and stories as a kid. It’s almost even more fun when you have your own children to relive the enchantment all over again. Libraries have become one of our favourite places to meet, with many even incorporating cafes and meeting rooms, that are used by a huge variety of community groups. They are places for mother’s groups to relax and have a coffee or students to find a quiet place to study. They run programs that bring people from all walks of life together, including story time, summer reading clubs, English as a second language, online gaming, digital literacy courses and book discussion groups. State councils operate 100 libraries and co-fund another 40 school based, joint-use libraries in rural and remote areas. Combined, councils invested $127million in the provision of libraries and cultural services last financial year(supported by $18.5million of State Government funding). So next time you need a book-nook, study area, bit of fun or even some equipment, look no further than your local library.  For more information go to lga.sa.gov.au/part-of-your-everyday [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column] [/et_pb_row] [/et_pb_section]

BIRTHDAY FOR BABIES HELD IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE LOST TO STILLBIRTH

Sixth Annual Birthday for Babies event to be held in remembrance of babies lost to stillbirth Event Details: WHAT: Birthday For Babies WHEN: Wednesday 12 February 2020 TIME: 4pm – 7pm WHERE: Partridge House Gardens, 38 Partridge Street, Glenelg, SA TICKETS: Gold coin entry Australia’s only charity dedicated to raising awareness of stillbirth is hosting its sixth consecutive remembrance event in Adelaide this February. Still Aware is inviting all members of the community to attend their twilight market and live butterfly release. Held at Partridge House in Glenelg on Wednesday February 12, the event is an initiative by Still Aware to help support families who have experienced stillbirth. In Australia, 6 babies are stillborn every day. According to Still Aware Founder and CEO, Claire Foord, the event not only provides an opportunity for parents but also their families and friends who have supported them through one of the most difficult times in their lives. “When my daughter Alfie would have been celebrating her first birthday, I sought ways to celebrate her life, rather than commemorate her death and found that there wasn’t really anything out there. Birthday for Babies originated because of this, designed to celebrate and honour those babies that can’t be here with us. A birthday party for all in honour and remembrance of our children.” says Foord. “We wanted to create a birthday feel, with sensitivity, a few market stalls and most importantly a live butterfly release to symbolise their little lives flying over us”, explains Foord. “There is very little celebration when faced with such devastation, the event provides emotional support and safe space for families who have experienced stillbirth – or any infant loss.” The local community is encouraged to attend the event. Still Aware has continued to expand the event to accommodate the whole community, including a growing market area, a new healing space, food, music and a kid’s zone. Alex Warren experienced the devastation of delivering her son Alfie stillborn on 11th July 2017. Alex and her husband Scott have been attending the Birthday for Babies event every year since, and they describe the event as a safe and peaceful environment to celebrate their son along with other parents who have experienced loss. “To speak about our son with other bereaved families really helped me. I felt so alone and harboured so much guilt for what had happened before talking with other bereaved parents”, says Warren. “Now our friends, family and even the wider community are talking about stillbirth and remembering our son, and it means the world to us”, explains Warren. “It shows that despite Alfie’s life being so short, it meant something, and his death had an impact that will last a lifetime.” “Stillbirth is still birth and these little lives are never little losses. Many stillbirths are preventable, but sadly stillbirth remains the leading cause of infant death in Australia” says Foord. “So while we will continue to honour those babies no longer with us every February, ultimately our goal every year is to see more of the community rally and show support and celebrate these little lives.” About Stillbirth in Australia: • Every day in Australia, 6 babies are stillborn, a statistic that has not changed in 20 years. • Stillbirth is defined as the death of a baby beyond 20 weeks gestation • Up to 60% of stillbirths occur at term or in the third trimester [1] • Did you know? Mothers monitoring their babies movements daily in the third trimester resulted in a 30% reduction in stillbirth in Norway. [2] About Still Aware: • Still Aware is the first internationally recognised not-for-profit charity solely dedicated to ending preventable stillbirth, through awareness and education. • Still Aware advocates that stillbirth is a national crisis for Australia, with over 2,000 families every year suffering the loss of their baby in traumatising circumstances. Stillbirth is currently the leading cause of infant death in Australia. • The organisation seeks to challenge behaviours and help change habits to save lives. Through cross platform awareness and education initiatives, Still Aware promotes and provides information backed by research. • Still Aware offers FREE information for all, including FREE education programs for care providers and expectant families Australia wide. • Through national education and awareness programs, Still Aware works to encourage clinicians and expectant parents to communicate better during pregnancy. birthdayforbabies.com.au FACEBOOK EVENT

WATER SAFETY FOR LIFE WITH BLUE DOLPHIN SWIM CENTRE

Water Safety For Life It’s summertime and as we are all dreaming about spending our days at our amazing South Australian beaches, rivers and pools we need to also think about whether our children are equipped to respond in a water emergency. Last year 276 people drowned in aquatic locations A 10% increase on 2017/2018 From accidental risk at pool parties to the flooding of waterways, learning to swim is a crucial safety skill and opens the door for enjoyment and fun in many forms of aquatic recreations. Blue Dolphin Swim Centre believe building courage and confidence in children allows them to trust themselves, to let go and to take control of their own survival in the water. Learning needs to be a fun experience, and children need to feel comfortable and relaxed to enable learning to occur and this is the exact environment Blue Dolphin Swim Centre aim to emulate. Ultimately exploration through trial and error and perseverance builds resilience in a fun and safe environment. Tips to get you through; · Talk to your children about water safety, bath time is the perfect time for this conversation · Adult Supervision is vital, know who is supervising your child, eliminate distractions, keep within arms reach and be prepared with all your belongings · Ensure you have your pool area secured by regulation fencing and remove items children can use to climb · Have an Emergency Plan and discuss it with your family, consider investing in CPR training · Reduce the Risk, invest in formal swimming lessons Swimming is a life skill and any drowning death is one too many. Blue Dolphin Swim Centre place great emphasis on how important a life skill it is for people of all ages to be able to swim. If you didn’t learn as a kid, it’s never too late. DIY: CHRISTMAS TREE FORREST

A forest of Christmas Trees By Little Picassos This is a super fun activity to involve the whole family in as we start creating and decorating, ready for the festive season. Most of the materials can be found around your home; perfect to reuse, recycle and re create. To create the Christmas Tree shape, ask the children to look at a Christmas tree (or a picture if yours is not up yet). Chat about the shape you can see (shape books are great if you have toddlers) and point out a triangle (with the point at the top). Source some stiff card or cardboard pieces (recycled boxes are great). You can choose what size you would like and how many trees to create, one big one or a forest of little Christmas trees. Step 1. Cut the recycled card to a triangle shape, if making a forest of trees, cut a length of card first then a series of triangles. Decide if you will paint both sides (it also stops it from curling if the card is thinner) or one side if just to be viewed from the front. Step 2. Decide on the tree base colour and paint up the tree(s). Acrylic paint is best as it is opaque and covers any printing or patterns underneath, but any paint you have at home will do. We like to always use Primary paint colours so children understand the connection of colours and colour mixing, so in this case to make a green tree, we use yellow and blue, lots of yellow a lighter green, more blue, darker. Art play Tip ** A trip to spotlight or Bunnings and choosing colour samples, colour ways or matching your decor at home is super fun and adds an excursion of colour into the mix, I love to see what colours children choose. Sample pots are very affordable and fun if we all get a personalised colour. Step 3. Begin painting, and if painting both sides you may need a little drying break in-between as you flip them over after they dry. You can keep this flat and even, or thick and textured, by adding more yellow or white to your brush as you go, you will get lots of variety in tone. Step 4. When the paint is dry now begin adding the layers of pattern and detail. Again, see what you can find, we have used pieces of colour pattern fabrics, sequins, ribbon, glitter paper, for collage, or oil pastels, pencil and pen for drawn designs. Each tree can have its own ‘theme’ Art Play Ideas:** You could create a nature tree using all found materials from outside, or each child may choose a colourway (for example a pink tree and find all the materials that are pink) another idea could be a rainbow tree as a group work and everybody can find colours that can be adhered to that section of the rainbow – lots of possibilities. Step 5. Glue, draw, make or create each of the trees or tree, fun free play or planned action. Step 6 Decide if you are having something on top of your tree – a star, angel, pompom, glue in place. Step 7 Make a stand for the tree. We have used several options here, the simplest and easiest is creating a rectangle of card and making a scissor cut at the base of the tree and one in the stand then insert, or you could make a right angle fold triangle from card and tape or hot glue to the back, or in our main image, with some pieces of tree trunk from a wood pile, we drilled holes in the base then inserted skewers, we used hot glue on the back of each tree triangle and attached to each skewer. Display and enjoy, and Merry Christmas!! Places like Spotlight, Lincraft etc, have a minimum cut of 20cm of the most delightful fabrics, laces, ribbons etc, an excursion to pick out and have small amounts cut to use on the trees is also an exciting idea to entertain and keep the children involved in the creating process. littlepicassos.com.au

REVIEW: FROZEN 2 @PALACE NOVA

Review: Frozen 2 By Kate Younie  The long (long) wait is over. The cinema is dotted with blue sparkles, long plaits and anticipation. My Miss Grace is a little to old (apparently) for the dressing up (well in public anyway), but is still excited to know what Anna and Elsa are up to in the magical world of Arendelle. And what song she can sing over (and over) for the next few years. The plot at first seems simple. The town of Arendelle is lost of its water, fire and wind. Elsa is called to the mysterious enchanted forest; a place her father forbid her to go as a child. The pull is strong; Elsa believes the answers to saving her village are there. Elsa and the trusty gang of Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven the reindeer travel into the mist-filled woods. Their journey is adventure packed and action filled. Elsa’s powers grow as she learns about her family’s past; the sisters learn what truly led to their parents demise. Then the sequel gets a little more complex than the original, and a bit darker. There are questions that don’t get answered but sometimes that’s not the point right? It’s magic RIGHT? And the music helps to explain the tricky bits. And the sad bits. But the ending is superb; full of colour, hope and happiness – it has all the feels of the original. Elsa proves again to be super brave and heroine like, and there is no doubting the girl has style. Like lots of style. Olaf is again his magnificent mischievous self. He gets the most laughs. Kristoff still loves Anna. And it is destined that they will all live happily ever after. At the end, all the little Anna and Elsas in the audience clapped and cheered, sighing in relief that all is well. My Miss Grace was happy and humming out of the cinema, all inspired by Queen Elsa. And now waiting (and waiting) in anticipation for the next movie. Film: Frozen 2 Rating: PG Run Time: 103 Minutes Showing: Palace Nova Cinemas, Prospect and Eastend Kate Younie @Big_little_words

ISSUE 13 OUT NOW!

This is easily my favourite time of year… Summer + Christmas = happiness. I am a Christmas tragic, so I love carols (Drummer Boy is my fav), making Christmas pudding in a cloth (thank you grandma Tilley), eating Christmas pudding (with ice-cream + brandy sauce), visiting the Christmas Tree Farm, reading Christmas books to the kids and drinking Egg Nog (or Christmas milk, as the kids call it). This issue we chat to the wonderfully talented Tiff Manuell, whose art embodies this magical time of year, with bright colours and a truly happy summery vibe, we also get the low down from Rebecca Morse on what it was like letting her eldest daughter Gracie out of her sight, travelling overseas solo for the first time, plus we get the perfect Christmas day ice cream cake recipe from the talented kitchen whiz, Annabel Bower. Enjoy your SUMMER school holidays and having the freedom to “not do anything” ! Be kind, be safe and enjoy this magical time of the year. X CC  READ HERE
