Easy Book Week costumes for kiddos!

It’s that time of year again! CBCA’s Book Week is celebrating 80 years of reading fun this year. Are you staring down the sewing machine or unblocking the glue gun? Book Week costumes can certainly be stressful, but not to worry. We’ve put together a list of easy Book Week costumes, that will have your kiddos best dressed at the Book Parade!

Kindy-Year 2: Little Kiddos

Bluey from the Bluey Books

Bluey book.

Bluey is the beloved star of both the TV series, and her very own books! A great pick if you already have a Bluey costume, or for siblings!

What You’ll Need:

  • Bluey or Bingo mask (template here)
  • Blue top + pants (or orange, for Bingo)

 

Instructions:

Assemble your chosen mask, dress in your colours, and don’t forget your favourite Bluey book!


Emma Memma

Emma Memma book.

Fans of Emma Memma? Why not dress as her? Combine a fun craft with a lot of orange, and you get this funky costume.

What you’ll need:

  • Pink shirt
  • Orange dress
  • Pink and orange craft paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • 2 bobby pins or barrettes
  • Hot glue (with parental supervision)

 

Instructions:

To make the butterflies, use the craft paper. Cut out:

    • Four orange circles
    • Four slightly smaller pink circles
    • A butterfly body
  • Assemble the butterflies by gluing the circles to the butterfly body.
  • Cut each pipe cleaner in half, then cut each half again to make 4 antennas.
  • Glue the antennas to the top of the butterfly.
  • Use hot glue to adhere the butterflies to bobby pins or barrettes.

Wear the pink shirt beneath the orange dress, curl up your hair and add butterflies!


Bindi

Bindi Irwin Wildlife Warrior book.

Join beloved Bindi Irwin this Book Week as an Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior!

What you’ll need:

  • Khaki/Brown Top & Pants
  • Wide brim hat
  • Stuffed animal for effect (we suggest a crocodile!)

 

Instructions:

Suit up in your Australia Zoo uniform! Add a fun stuffed animal to complete the look.


MOOKI vs the Big Scary 

MOOKI V The Big Scary

Is your kiddo a fan of outer space? If so, they’ll love dressing up as the astronaut MOOKi from Scotty James’ new series! This is also the perfect book for an astronaut costume you’ve already got.

What you’ll need:

  • White jumpsuit or jacket and pants
  • Red gloves
  • Red gumboots or red sneakers
  • Pre-made helmet OR use a white bike helmet OR you can create your own out of cardboard and papier-mâché
  • Red cardboard for the astronaut patches

 

Instructions:

This outfit is out of this world! Simply dress in a white jumpsuit, add the red shoes, gloves and the helmet. Add red astronaut patches on the front of the top to complete the look!


Year 4-Year 6: Big Kiddos

Alice-Miranda

Alice-Miranda in Egypt book.

An iconic Jacqueline Harvey character perfect for Book Week! Alice-Miranda fits this year’s theme of “Book an Adventure” to a tee, and luckily her wardrobe is easy to recreate!

What you’ll need:

  • School uniform or a tartan skirt and blazer
  • A pink headband
  • A pink tie
  • Knee high socks and black shoes

 

Instructions:

Wear your hair loose if allowed, otherwise wear a plait or ponytail with the pink headband. Draw on freckles and apply rosy blush and get ready for an Alice Miranda adventure!


Friday Barnes

Friday Barnes book.

Solve the mystery of a Book Week costume with Friday Barnes!

Using clothes you might already have at home, this costume is simple to construct and comfortable for a Book Week parade alongside searching out clues.

What you’ll need:

  • Tan sweater or jacket
  • Striped shirt
  • Jeans
  • Sneakers
  • Fedora
  • Magnifying glass (optional)

 

Instructions:

Dress up in your best sleuthing outfit, with pigtails if you have long enough hair! Best completed with a magnifying glass.


Bonus Group Costume: Frog Log & Dave!

This rock band trio turned delivery drivers would make an excellent group costume, and with a bit of crafting, easy to put together!

What you need:

  • Khaki top and pants
  • Small cardboard Box (optional)

 

Frog – Frog mask template, string, colouring pencils

Log – brown cardboard, scissors, sticky tape

Dave – dog mask template, brown paper bag (with jelly babies!), hat

 

Instructions:

Dress in your delivery driver colours, and add a delivery box if you wish (a good place to store your copy!)

 

For Frog:

  • Print out a frog mask template, colour in, and attach a string for a Froggy look.

 

For Log:

 

  • Cut out a cylinder shape, slightly taller than a crown, and fit to your child’s head. Tape together.
  • Doodle some whorls and lines to make your crown, Log style!

 

For Dave:

 

  • Print out a dog mask template, colour in, and attach a string for wear. Don’t forget his signature jelly babies!
