Celebrate the transformation of Breakout Creek at a free community event

Breakout Creek/Purruna Pari, the westernmost end of the River Torrens/Karrawirra Pari, has undergone a major multimillion dollar transformation over three decades – and now is your chance to explore the latest 1.5km stretch of the rejuvenation.

To celebrate this wonderful space for the community, Green Adelaide is hosting BreakOUT! Discover Breakout Creek/Purruna Pari on Saturday 15 November.

This free event will feature face painting, musicians, inflatable installations, dinosaur puppets, and much more!

The event is a perfect opportunity to visit this picturesque part of the river and see some of the changes that have been made.

Green Adelaide Chair Professor Chris Daniels says the third stage of the redevelopment of Breakout Creek, between Tapleys Hill Road and Seaview Road, is a huge environmental achievement and this event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the space.

“This family-friendly community event is a great opportunity for people to experience the redeveloped space perhaps for the first time,” Professor Daniels says.

“The Cities of Charles Sturt and West Torrens have come together with Green Adelaide and the state and commonwealth governments to create a whole new ecosystem at Breakout Creek.”

“We’re all immensely proud of it, so we wanted to put on an event that brings families into the space for a really fun, free day out.”

“The redevelopment of this last stage of Breakout Creek was an enormous undertaking with the goal of making this an accessible community space and massively increasing the biodiversity in the area,” Professor Daniels said.

“We have planted 245,000 native plants across 80 species across the site, which has revitalised the area – it’s now a haven for important native insects and birds. We’ve also created two wetlands that have improved stormwater quality, and we’ve also developed over 6km of new shared-use paths and less formal trails.”

Professor Daniels says Breakout Creek is a wonderful example of Green Adelaide’s wider vision for metropolitan Adelaide.

“We are so lucky to live in a city like Adelaide where nature is literally on our doorstep, and Breakout Creek is a fine example of the work Green Adelaide and our partners across all levels of government do together to ensure our city keeps on becoming cooler, greener, and wilder.”
