Adelaide Central Market welcomes back Sauce Day 2023

Adelaide Central Market Sauce Day
South Australia is gearing up for a day filled with fun and good food, as Sauce Day 2023 makes its return to the Adelaide Central Market.

Celebrating Italian food and culture, the event will be hosted by local food personality Rosa Matto, who will conduct three traditional Italian sauce-making sessions. Participants will be able to make their own passata and take it home with them. The team from Lucia’s Pizza and Spaghetti Bar, known for serving classic Italian dishes for over 65 years, will provide locally sourced tomatoes used in their famous range of sauces.

Sauce making sessions

Sauce Day, also known as Passata Day, is an Italian/Australian tradition where families and friends come together to make delicious pasta sauce during the first few months of the year when tomatoes are most ripe. Adelaide Central Market Authority General Manager Jodie Kannane said that the return of Sauce Day is an excellent opportunity to showcase the multicultural history of the Market. The Market has a wide range of locally made Italian produce that customers love, including fresh pasta, sauces, smallgoods, cheese, and traditional coffee. Sauce Day celebrates the traders of Italian heritage who have contributed so much over many decades to the rich history of the Market.

Market traders will also offer Italian specials for the day, including half-price house-made gnocchi from Marino Meat and Food Store and buy-two-get-one-free on Lucia’s delicious sauce range. Apart from sauce-making, there will be Market-wide activities, including live music, a kids charcoal sketching class, face painting, a cooking demonstration by Altavilla community group, and a live radio broadcast by Radio Italiana.

Food fun and Italian culture

Sauce-making sessions cost $15 per person, including a goodie bag and sauce to take home, and will be held at the South East entrance (off Gouger St). Tickets are still available for the 9 am and 1 pm sessions. Sauce Day promises to be a day filled with food, fun, and a celebration of Italian culture.

Please note: Gloves and aprons will be provided. It is recommended to wear old clothes, closed in shoes and long hair tied back. Please meet 10 minutes prior to the class time at The Market Stall with freshly washed hands.
