It's Term 3 and every parent of kindergarten and primary aged children know that Book Week is right around the corner and that means it's costume time again!

With Book Week 2024 scheduled in for Week 5 (19th – 23rd of August), it is only a couple of weeks away to get organising our kiddos costumes! During Book Week schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. During this week you’ll often see parades with students dressed as their favourite book characters!

I believe you either love or hate Book Week! We have a love/hate relationship in this household. The charm of delving into the world of make believe and imagination is magical and brings joy to my inner child but the added mental load of thinking, planning, creating or buying a costume can feel a little overwhelming and daunting.

To help with one part of the mental load we have listed 24 costume ideas for Book Week 2024 in the hopes that not having to think of an idea makes your Book Week 2024 feel a little more simple.

Whether you’re a whizz on the sewing machine, a DIY queen or you’ll be ducking to the shops or rummaging through the costume box the night before, we’ve got you covered with costume ideas.

Book Week 2024 Theme

The Children’s Book Council of Australia has set the theme for Children’s Book Week 2024 as ‘Reading is Magic’, which we think leaves a lot of room for imagination and the door open for anything we inspire! We hope you find some good inspiration here for this year’s Book Week!
