Climb aboard fire trucks and watch live rescues at the free MFS Open Day

Little ones who wave at every passing fire truck are in for a big day out when Adelaide Fire Station opens its doors on Saturday 14 November.

Little ones who wave at every passing fire truck are in for a big day out. The MFS Open Day is back at Adelaide Fire Station on Saturday 14 November, and after a year off in 2025, the state’s largest fire station is opening its doors again. Entry is free, there are real fire trucks to explore, and live rescue demonstrations run from 11am to 2pm.

It’s a rare chance to get behind the scenes, meet the firefighters and see the gear they use every day.

Climb aboard the fire trucks

The fire trucks are the main attraction, and kids can climb up and have a proper look. Specialist rescue equipment will be on show too, and firefighters will be on hand to answer questions. Expect plenty of questions about hoses, helmets and sirens.

Live rescue demonstrations

The demonstrations are the most exciting part of the day. Crews will run a road crash rescue simulation, showing how they work together to free someone trapped in a vehicle. Firefighters will also carry out a rope rescue from the station’s training tower, which is sure to have little ones looking straight up.

Older kids will get a feel for how much skill and training goes into emergency work. Younger ones will just love the action.

Meet the emergency services team

It’s not just the MFS at this open day. Families can also meet crews from:

  • SA Police
  • SA Country Fire Service (CFS)
  • SA State Emergency Service (SES)
  • SA Ambulance Service

Each service will have displays showing what they do and how they help keep South Australians safe. It’s a good chance for kids to meet the people behind the uniforms, which can make emergency services feel familiar rather than scary.

Fire safety the whole family can use

Along with the fun, the MFS will share practical fire safety advice for families. It’s a good time to start conversations at home about smoke alarms, escape plans and what to do in an emergency. Kids often remember these lessons better when a real firefighter has explained them.

Tips for your visit

  • Arrive early. It’s free and only runs for three hours, so the popular displays may draw a crowd.
  • Plan how you’ll get there. The station is on Wakefield Street in the city. Allow time for parking, or catch public transport.
  • Bring hats, sunscreen and water. Many of the displays and demonstrations are outdoors.
  • Talk about it afterwards. Use the day to make or update your family’s fire escape plan.
