If your household is anything like ours, Shaun the Sheep holds a special place in family viewing. There’s something magical about how Aardman’s woolly hero and his flock communicate entirely through bleats, squeaks and expressive eyebrows. No dialogue, no exposition, just pure visual storytelling that kids and adults can follow together. The latest film, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, takes everything we love about the series and dials it up with a healthy dose of Halloween spookiness.
I took my five-year-old to see this one during the school holidays, and she was absolutely glued to the screen from start to finish. If your little ones are Shaun devotees, they’re in for a treat.
The story
This time around, Shaun gets a bit too ambitious with his experiments. When he stumbles upon some mysterious goo in the Farmer’s shed, his inner mad scientist takes over. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan. Cue giant pumpkins, a monstrous mystery creature and a whole lot of hairy trouble for the residents of Mossy Bottom Farm.
The wordless storytelling that Aardman does so brilliantly is on full display here. My daughter was narrating the action to me in whispers the whole way through, proving just how clearly the story comes across without a single spoken word. It’s a testament to the animators and filmmakers that young children can follow every twist and turn purely through visual cues and those wonderfully expressive character designs.
Of course, little Timmy the lamb is along for the adventure, providing plenty of heart and cuteness to balance out the spookier moments.

The Halloween vibes
Here’s where parents need to take note. The Beast of Mossy Bottom leans heavily into Halloween territory. We’re talking creepy shadows, mysterious creatures lurking in the dark and some genuinely atmospheric moments that feel straight out of a monster movie, albeit a very family-friendly one.
My daughter absolutely loves Halloween, so she was in her element. She thought the spooky bits were brilliant and spent the car ride home talking about her favourite “scary” scenes. But I could see how some of the darker sequences might be a bit much for kids who are sensitive to that sort of thing.
The film doesn’t hold back on creating atmosphere. There are shadowy barn scenes, a genuine sense of mystery around the “beast”, and some moments where the tension builds in ways that younger or more anxious viewers might find overwhelming. It’s not scary in a nightmare-inducing way, but the Halloween mood is consistent throughout.
Who will love it
If your child is the type who counts down to Halloween, loves a bit of spooky fun and enjoys monster stories with heart, this film is an absolute winner. The combination of Shaun’s signature physical comedy with the atmospheric Halloween setting creates something that feels fresh while staying true to what makes the franchise so beloved.
Kids who are already fans of the TV series will recognise all their favourite characters and enjoy seeing them in this bigger, bolder adventure. The giant pumpkins alone had my daughter cackling.

Who might want to skip it
If your little one gets scared easily or doesn’t enjoy anything with a spooky edge, this might not be the right pick. The film commits to its Halloween aesthetic, and while it never crosses into genuinely frightening territory, the darker visual style and monster-movie tropes are present throughout.
You know your child best. If they’re the type to hide behind a cushion during mildly tense scenes or have nightmares after anything with a “creature”, perhaps save this one for when they’re a bit older or watch it at home first so you can gauge their reaction.
The verdict
We loved it. The wordless storytelling remains as clever and engaging as ever, the animation is gorgeous, and the Halloween setting gives the whole thing a seasonal energy that made it feel like an event. My five-year-old is already asking when we can watch it again.
For families who enjoy a bit of spooky fun and appreciate the unique charm of Shaun and his woolly mates, The Beast of Mossy Bottom delivers exactly what you’d hope for. Just maybe leave the more sensitive little ones at home with Bitzer.
