Adelaide’s weather can be gloriously unpredictable. One minute you’re planning a beach day, the next you’re watching rain streak down the windows while small humans bounce off the walls. But a wet day doesn’t have to mean a wasted day. In fact, some of Adelaide’s best family attractions are made for exactly these moments.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to burn off energy, spark curiosity or just pass a couple of hours without anyone asking if they can watch more TV, we’ve rounded up the best rainy day activities for kids in Adelaide.
Museums and discovery centres
South Australian Museum
The South Australian Museum on North Terrace is a rainy day classic for good reason. Entry is free, there’s plenty of space to roam, and kids of all ages find something to captivate them. The Egyptian mummies never fail to impress, the megafauna gallery sparks big questions, and the extensive First Nations collection offers an opportunity to learn about Australia’s deep history. Plan for at least a couple of hours.

MOD. at UniSA
For older kids and tweens, MOD. on North Terrace delivers free, interactive exhibitions that explore science, technology and big ideas. It’s immersive, hands-on and genuinely engaging. Best suited to ages 8 and up, though curious younger kids can enjoy it too with a parent guiding the way.
National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide
Train-obsessed kids will lose themselves at the National Railway Museum. Climb aboard heritage locomotives, explore carriages and learn about South Australia’s railway history. It’s undercover, spacious and endlessly fascinating for transport-loving little ones.
Play centres and active fun
Bounce Adelaide
When kids need to move, Bounce delivers across multiple locations. Trampolines, climbing walls, a ninja course and more mean everyone comes home tired. It’s pricier than a museum visit but worth it when cabin fever hits hard.

Inflatable World
Giant inflatable obstacle courses, slides and climbing structures make Inflatable World a hit for active kids. Locations at Adelaide Airport and Elizabeth mean there’s likely one within reach. Sessions run for set times, so you know exactly what you’re committing to.
Local indoor play centres
Adelaide is dotted with indoor play centres offering everything from ball pits to multi-level climbing frames. Try Kiddo Mag favourites like Magic Mountain at Glenelg, Playtime 4 Kids at Findon or Chipmunks at various locations. Most have cafes attached, which means coffee for you while they climb.
Creative and cultural spaces
Art Gallery of South Australia
The Art Gallery of South Australia offers free entry and a surprisingly kid-friendly experience. The Start Gallery is designed specifically for families, with interactive elements that help children engage with art on their own terms. Check the website for school holiday workshops and family programs.
JamFactory
Also on North Terrace, JamFactory showcases contemporary craft and design. Kids can watch glassblowers at work, which is mesmerising for all ages. The shop is full of beautiful handmade objects, so keep little hands close.

Libraries
Never underestimate the humble library. Adelaide’s public libraries offer far more than books. Storytime sessions, school holiday activities, LEGO clubs and maker spaces mean there’s often something happening. Check your local branch’s calendar.
Swimming pools
Already wet outside? Lean into it. Adelaide Aquatic Centre, the ARC at Campbelltown or your local council pool offer warm water, waterslides and the chance to tire kids out properly. Many have dedicated toddler areas and family change rooms.
Bowling, movies and arcades
Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason. Kingpin Bowling, Zone Bowling and Planet Entertainment offer bowling, laser tag and arcade games under one roof. Pair with a movie session at Palace Nova, Hoyts or Event Cinemas for a full rainy day itinerary.
Rainy days in Adelaide don’t have to mean climbing the walls. With a little planning and a willingness to embrace the grey, you might just discover a new family favourite. Keep this list bookmarked for the next time the forecast looks grim.
