Free storytelling night for Adelaide families at St Raphael’s

This free event at St Raphael's School invites kids to become storytellers, swap books and fall in love with reading. It's interactive, theatrical and open to toddlers through Year 6.

There’s something magical about watching a child disappear into a story. That moment when the outside world fades and they’re completely absorbed in another universe, turning pages like their life depends on it. But in a world of screens and short attention spans, how do we nurture that kind of deep reading?

St Raphael’s School in Adelaide is tackling this question head-on with a free family event designed to spark a genuine love of books. And it’s not your standard sit-down-and-listen reading night.

What to expect

Reading Revolution is a 90-minute interactive evening where children don’t just listen to stories, they help create them. The event puts kids in the storyteller’s seat, building confidence and creativity along the way.

The evening includes:

  • A theatrical storytelling experience where children actively participate
  • A chance for kids to share their favourite books with others
  • A relaxed book swap (a great way to refresh your home library for free)

Activities are tailored by age group, with separate workshops running so toddlers aren’t competing with Year 6 students for attention. Everyone gets something pitched just right for them.

Why interactive reading matters

Research consistently shows that children who engage actively with stories, rather than passively consuming them, develop stronger comprehension skills and a more lasting relationship with reading. When kids see themselves as part of the storytelling process, books become less of a chore and more of an adventure.

There’s also something powerful about book sharing. When a child recommends a favourite story to a peer, they’re not just practising communication skills. They’re building an identity as a reader, someone who has opinions about books and wants to share them.

Tips for making the most of the night

If you’re planning to attend, here are a few ways to get the whole family excited:

  • Bring books to swap. Have your kids choose a few titles they’ve outgrown or read multiple times. Someone else’s treasure is waiting for them in return.
  • Ask your child to pick a favourite to share. It doesn’t have to be literary gold. If they love it, that’s what matters.
  • Talk about stories on the way there. Ask what kind of story they’d create if they could write anything. Dragons? Space travel? A mystery set in their own school?

Building readers at home

Events like this are brilliant for sparking enthusiasm, but the real magic happens in the everyday moments. Reading aloud together, even when kids can read independently, keeps that connection alive. Letting children see you reading, for pleasure, not just work, sends a powerful message about what adults value.

And perhaps most importantly, following their interests matters more than following a recommended reading list. A child obsessed with dinosaurs who devours every dinosaur book in the library is building reading stamina and vocabulary just as effectively as one working through classics.

Reading Revolution is a chance to step outside the usual homework-reading routine and remember why stories matter in the first place. For connection, for imagination, for fun.

Register your family now and give your kids a night where books are the main event.
