At Westminster School in Marion, co-curricular learning is central to the Preparatory School experience, nurturing confidence, resilience and belonging in every student.

At Westminster, learning extends far beyond the classroom, shaped by a spirit of Adventurous Education that encourages students to explore, take considered risks and embrace new experiences. During the early years of school, the foundations for confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning are formed. Within an expansive and inspiring campus, Preparatory students are empowered to discover their strengths and grow with confidence through every opportunity.

The Preparatory School Co-Curricular Program sits at the heart of this approach. It is not an addition to learning but a core part of the Westminster experience, designed to nurture the whole child. Through a diverse range of activities, students develop physically, intellectually, creatively and socially, building resilience and a strong sense of belonging.

Guided by specialist teachers and supported by exceptional facilities, including the Michael Murray Centre for Performing Arts, Head of Preparatory School Simon McKenzie said these experiences provide meaningful exposure to a wide range of pursuits. “Co-curricular experiences play a vital role in helping children discover who they are and where their interests lie,” he said. “It is through these opportunities that students build confidence, develop friendships and begin to understand their own strengths.”

A wide variety of clubs ensures every student finds their place. Art Masters nurtures creativity; Chess and Debating build strategic thinking and communication; Environmental Club connects students with the natural world; Science Club, Robotics and Tournament of Minds develop inquiry, problem-solving and teamwork. Physical activity is equally valued, with Running Club and Swimming Club promoting fitness and wellbeing alongside a broad sporting program spanning netball, cricket, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and football.

While the focus remains on participation, enjoyment and inclusion, pathways also exist for students seeking a more competitive experience. Importantly, all co-curricular opportunities are included within the school fee, apart from private music and swimming lessons, enabling every student to participate fully. “Through our co-curricular experiences, students discover their strengths, build confidence and develop the resilience to thrive well beyond their years,” Mr McKenzie said.

At Westminster, co-curricular learning is central to the school’s values, where students discover passions, build lasting friendships and develop the confidence to embrace the future with purpose.
