Adelaide Fringe Review: Splish Splash Science

Splish Splash Science brings water, music, and audience participation to Adelaide Fringe, making science fun for school-aged kids.

Stepping into The Roundhouse on a rainy Saturday morning, my junior reviewers and I were unaware our umbrella would be as handy indoors as it had been outside – but with a name like Splish Splash Science, we should have known better.

Water is the star of the show in this hour of H2O facts, hosted by the particularly musical Rip Tide and featuring a bucketful of audience participation. With the help of plenty of willing volunteers, we witnessed water being squeezed, poured, balanced, transferred, squirted, and even exploded.

Sprinkled with song-and-dance numbers, Splish Splash Science is fast-paced and well-suited to the tricky school-aged audience. The educational factor would slip past toddlers and kindy kiddos but there is plenty of action to keep everyone’s attention.

Our 10-year-old reviewer was thrilled to make it into the Splash Zone, volunteering on stage and more than happy to get a bit wet in the process.

“I learned there are more water particles in a glass of water than there are stars in the sky or grains of sand on earth,” said Poppy.

Surrounded by buckets and supported by a high-diving Ken doll, Rip Tide keeps the particle party rolling along and is the kind of person you’d hope your kid gets as their science teacher – a contagious enthusiasm and a guarantee you wont forget about your drink bottle all day.

A great option for schools and families alike, Splish Splash Science earned 4 out of 5 stars from us (because the 8-year-old didn’t like getting wet).

Showing at The Roundhouse until Sun 22 March.
