Australia Day 2026: Free Family Events in Adelaide

Celebrate Australia Day 2026 with a full day of free, family-friendly events along the River Torrens/Karrawirra Parri, brought to life by the Australia Day Council of South Australia.

Held at Elder Park/Tarntanya Wama, this year’s program invites families to come together to reflect, learn and celebrate through culture, creativity and community. With interactive activities, performances and a vibrant evening celebration, it’s a meaningful and memorable way to mark the national day with kids of all ages.

Morning: Mourning in the Morning

7.30am – 8.45am | Elder Park/Tarntanya Wama

The day begins with Mourning in the Morning, a respectful, First Nations–led ceremony shaped by South Australian Aboriginal leaders. Families are welcome to attend this inclusive gathering, which includes a Welcome to Kaurna Country, a smoking ceremony conducted by Elder Uncle Moogy Sumner, First Nations speakers, contemporary music and dance.

This gentle, reflective event offers an opportunity to pause, listen and learn together.

Midday: 21 Gun Salute

12.00pm – 12.15pm | Torrens Parade Ground

A traditional 21 Gun Salute will be held at midday as part of the official Australia Day commemorations.

Evening: Aus Lights on the River

5.00pm – 11.00pm | Elder Park/Tarntanya Wama

As the sun sets, Aus Lights on the River transforms Elder Park into a colourful, family-friendly celebration. Expect multicultural food stalls, immersive light and sound experiences, creative workshops for children, roving performers and large-scale installations inspired by Australian birds.

The Aus Lights Parade begins at 6.00pm, with more than 50 South Australian multicultural and community groups sharing their stories through music, movement and colour. Community performers will then take to the main stage before the Official Ceremony, featuring headline performances from Diana Rouvas, the Festival Statesmen Choir, Young Adelaide Voices and the Adelaide Youth Orchestra.

The night wraps up with a spectacular fireworks finale over the river at 9.30pm, followed by music and lighting displays along the northern bank.
