Little hearts, big impact: Seymour College Junior Years rally to help the homeless

Seymour College donates to Hutt Street Centre.
The students in the Junior Years at Seymour College have been making a meaningful difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness – and showing just how powerful young hearts can be when they come together with purpose and compassion.

In recent weeks, the Junior Years Student Representative Council (SRC) led a school-wide donation drive, gathering essentials like sleeping bags, blankets, towels, non-perishable food, toiletries, and warm clothes. Families from across the school community jumped on board, showing incredible generosity.

The Junior Years SRC Representatives, along with supportive staff, recently hand-delivered the donations to the Hutt Street Centre – a local organisation that provides vital support for people doing it tough.

Carmel from the Hutt Street Centre was deeply moved by the effort, sharing that it was “the largest donation she has ever seen from a school.”

Principal Vanessa Browning says the project reflects the values the College instils in its students from an early age.

“We are incredibly proud of our Junior Years students for recognising the importance of giving back and for leading this initiative with such care and commitment. The girls have seen first-hand that even small gestures can make a big difference to those in need. This is a powerful lesson that will stay with them well beyond their school years.”

The school is committed to continuing its support of local community organisations and encouraging students to grow into caring, socially responsible individuals.

For the girls, the experience left a lasting impression.

“Going to the Hutt Street Centre made me feel happy in my heart because I feel good that we were helping homeless people.” – Beatrix, Year 2

“We donated so many things to help others. Our motto is ‘I grow by serving’ and this is what we do at Seymour. I love helping other people.” – Charlee, Year 2

Through this heartfelt initiative, Seymour’s youngest students have shown that when kids lead with kindness, they can inspire big change.
