The Messy Magic Adventure is a fun, chaotic, and laugh-filled show that is heavy on the messy, light on the magic.
The show centres around two lovable characters, Spray and Wipe, who work as contract cleaners. They’ve been tasked with the job of cleaning a magician’s house, and what follows is a whirlwind of chaos, laughter, and a series of increasingly absurd mishaps. Blending slapstick comedy with some circus skills, a touch of magic and a whole lot of audience participation, this high-energy performance kept the young crowd engaged from start to finish.
While it took a little time before we saw a magic trick (and there are only a few after the first), the show more than makes up for it with its charm and comedic brilliance. The humour was spot on for its target age group, with all three of my children (8, 6 and almost 3) raucously laughing at Spray and Wipe’s antics.
The duo have a natural rapport that makes them an absolute joy to watch, and they bring so much warmth and enthusiasm to their performance. The show’s focus was more on comedy and circus antics than traditional magic, but the combination worked well for a young audience.
Overall, The Messy Magic Adventure is a silly, interactive, and entertaining experience that thrives on kid-friendly humour and audience participation.
If you’re after a polished magic show to take your kids to this Fringe season, this may not be the one, however if you’re happy with lots of silliness induced laughter, chaos and a few surprises, it’s a great pick for a family-friendly Fringe outing.
