Walford’s Junior School embraces excellence

In 2023 the Walford Junior School community completed the Evaluation process as part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).

The IB PYP Evaluation process is part of the ongoing commitment to the standards and practices of the PYP, ensuring that schools maintain and enhance the quality of education offered within the framework of the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme.

The evaluation process enabled all members of the School community, including students from early learning to Year 5, parents, teaching staff, school leadership and the Council of Governors to be involved in rigorous and high-level discussions about our teaching and learning at Walford, including examining the curriculum, teaching methods, assessment practices, and the overall impact of the program in the Junior School.

The IB PYP Evaluators said:

The Walford Junior School excels in its commitment to fostering empowerment and personal development. Walford’s holistic approach to education equips students with the skills, values, and mindset needed to thrive academically, socially, and personally, both during their time at the school and beyond.

A highlight of the process was learning how proud our students are to be part of our Junior School. Their love and enthusiasm for the personalised curriculum available to them came through in the conversations the evaluators had with the students.

Walford’s Strategic Pillars, Big Hearts, Bright Minds, Bespoke Pathways, and Bold Futures, support us in furthering our work with the IB PYP Framework. They allow us to strengthen and develop our teaching and learning programs across the Junior School so that each student can achieve her best, her way.

Word on the Street with Helen Connolly: Childhood friendships – why are they so important?

One of the things children repeatedly tell me is how important it is for them to have good friends. Children are very aware of the reasons their peers might have difficulty making friends. Although they know it can be harder for a child who has a physical or intellectual disability, a different gender or skin colour, or a personality that is not like most of their peers, they told me the main reason some children feel left out is because they “don’t know how to make friends”.
