Set to take place at Her Majesty’s Theatre in September of this year, this co-production with West Australian Opera promises to be an operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, described by director Stuart Maunder as a captivating blend of Braveheart meeting Game of Thrones. With a cast of 40 and the powerful Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the pit, this production is poised to be a remarkable theatrical experience.
The role up for grabs is that of Fleance, the son of Banquo, both of whom fall victim to the fierce ambition of Macbeth in his quest to become the King of Scotland. Fleance, portrayed as a pre-adolescent character aged between 11 and 14, appears in two different scenes throughout the opera. It is important to note that Fleance is not a singing character, so singing skills are not required. While any acting experience, even at an amateur or school level, is appreciated, it is not mandatory for this role. Children from all cultural backgrounds are invited to participate and showcase their talents.
How to apply
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the minor performers, all applications must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian. By submitting the application, the parent or guardian commits to ensuring the availability and attendance of the performer for a total of 12 rehearsals and performances, which will take place between 16 August and 16 September. A detailed schedule will be provided on the State Opera website.
It is worth noting that this is a paid role, and the selected performer will be formally contracted by State Opera South Australia. Although the chosen individual may not possess professional experience, they will be treated as a professional artist throughout the process. Minors will be accompanied by a chaperon provided by State Opera during rehearsals and performances. This measure ensures compliance with health and safety regulations both on and off stage, and offers support when interacting with other industry professionals such as the director, conductor, stage manager, cast members, and chorus.
To participate in this exciting opportunity, registrations must be submitted through the State Opera website by 11:59 pm on 30 July. Following this deadline, the creative team will review all applications and shortlist several candidates for an in-person meeting, where final selections will be made.
